Actors are mumbling, and audio mixes are getting louder and less balanced. Simon, for one, just wants to hear what people are saying again...
I still remember the first time I watched a television programme and genuinely didn't have a clue what a character in front of my eyes was saying. It's one for Brits of a certain vintage this, as the programme concerned was Grange Hill, and the character was Pogo Patterson, a scheming school entrepreneur with a voice so nasally-twanged that I quickly accepted that he and I were never likely to have a conversation. He never seemed to have much interesting to say either, but I couldn't tell you that with any certainty.
However, across the 80s and 90s, I put this kind of thing to the back of my mind. I kept watching films and television shows, actors and actresses said their lines, I heard them,...

Last night was my first chance to meet the Top 12 contestants on "American Idol." After getting to know them a little bit and getting to know their personalities, I can tell you that my favorites now are Michael Lynche, Crystal Bowersox, Lacey Brown and Andrew Garcia. I learned some interesting little tidbits from each contestant and today I present my Top 12 top tidbits from the Top 12 party.
12. The contestants have been picking out their own clothes up until now for the live shows. "Ninety-nine percent has been on my own," Lacey Brown revealed. "We get ...

Highlights, song choices and judges input from tonight's Top Ten Idol Guy Performances:
Michael Lynche--"This is a Man's World" (James Brown)--Rave reviews from all judges; Randy gave him a standing ovation. Simon said 'completely different from last week'. (Sure kept my attention!)
John Park-----"Gravity" (John Mayer)---Randy says it wasn't special with a few pitch problems. Ellen and Kara agree it was better than last week, but needed soul and connection to the audience. Simon says he thinks John will be returning to his own band this week. (Pretty forgettable.)
Casey James----"I Don't Wanna Be" (Gavin Degraw)---Randy praised his guitar playing, saying he was channeling Hendrix. Ellen says she wants to see him perform more. (??) Kara says Casey took two steps backwards for her and his singing wasn't distinct or on key. Simon says he was trying to be a rock star and agrees...

It was the boys' turn on Amercan Idol last night, and the top 12 guys got to perform - with disastrous results. No, nobody passed out or forgot the lyrics, but if these are the 12 most talented guys that the Idol judges saw out of all the thousands of people that auditioned, then we have a problem. America is in the middle of a full-on talent crisis.Let's start with the no-brainer of last night's show: Andrew Garcia - already an obvious frontrunner this season - was the best of the night. Garcia sang a Fall Out Boy song, played his guitar, and did a pretty good job overall. But we'll be honest - despite the Garcia mania th ...

It was the moment of truth for the Hollywood Week contestants on "American Idol." On Wednesday night, dreams were fulfilled, while others were slashed, as Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi, Randy Jackson, and Ellen DeGeneres announced the final 24 contestants. Janell Wheeler, 24, from Tampa, Fl was elated that she will progress to the show’s next round. She burst out of the theater doors to Ryan Seacrest and pronounced, "If I was Bikini Girl, I'd kiss you right now." Not everyone was a rookie auditioner. Lacey Brown, 24, returned after not making it through last year. She impressed the judges with her rendition of "What a Wonderful World," which offered as background vocals for a montage of other contestants receiving good news. Unfortunately, not all veterans to the "Idol" stage were so lucky. Angela Martin met a disappointing fate for the third time. The mother of a special needs daughter had to pull...

Every season on "America Idol," there is a moment when a contestant distances him- or herself from the field, when they become instantly memorable — perhaps even bankable — stars. Think Adam Lambert's emotive take on "Mad World" or David Cook's soulful rendition of "Billy Jean." These are performances that made viewers begin to think "Wait a minute, I like this guy."
On Tuesday night's (February 9) "Idol," we had what many are considering to be the first moment of season nine. Andrew Garcia, the likeable, neck-tatted dad, wowed pretty much everyone with his acoustic version of Paula Abdul's "Straight Up."
The performance earned high praise from the judges (Kara Dioguardi proclaimed it "genius") and almost instantly Garcia became the contestant everyone was watching.
But not me.

The first episode of the Hollywood Round begins with an introduction to new judge Ellen DeGeneres, who jokes that Simon Cowell is leaving because she has joined the show. Contestants are told they may sing either a capella or with an instrument. It will be sudden death: after performing, hopefuls will either move on to the next round or be asked to leave. In the first group, Katie Stevens impresses the judges and is sent forward, while Antonio 'Skiiboski' Wheeler makes a bad impression, with Ellen declaring that "sexy and scary is a fine line" and Simon simply saying, "You're not a very good singer". Simon delivers a range of put-downs, and Ellen has the crowd in hysterics with her comments. Andrew Garcia sings Paula Abdul's 'Straight Up' with a guitar and impresses the audience. Kara exclaims that the performance was "genius" (more)...

Thousands of hopefuls. Hundreds of songs. Seven cities. Four excruciating weeks. A dude in a two-piece bikini. One pair of pants on the ground. On Wednesday, "American Idol" wrapped up the auditions for its ninth season, and judging by the numbers — or, really, any other quantifier — it was a pretty interesting ride.
From the news that Simon Cowell would be leaving the show at season's end, to the spate of celebrity judges lined up by show producers (Neil Patrick Harris, we love you), "Idol" generated more than a few headlines, and in the auditioners rolled out for our viewing, uncovered some genuine diamonds in the rough.
Of course, producers also shined a spotlight on some lumps of coal too (we're looking at you,...

"American Idol" made a fatal flaw Tuesday night during its Denver audition show. No, not by inviting back Victoria Beckham as a guest judge. (The Poshbot-2000 was actually pretty engaging this episode. She must have been rewired since the premiere.) "Idol" producers erred by reminding viewers of Daughtry's classic Denver audition right at the top of the show. Nothing in the remaining 59 minutes of "Idol" would come close to that star-making moment.
And if you just uttered the words "Bikini Boy," I kindly ask that you close this Internet window and never read one of my recaps again. Honestly, it's not worth your time because I don't speak the language on Planet Idiot.
Throughout the episode, Seacrest kept shouting at viewers in voice-overs touting Denver as one of the most promising cities yet. But the proof wasn't in the pudding we saw. Instead we had Nicci Nix, a girl who...

We're headed into the final week of American Idol auditions -- how quickly they've sped by, yet how tedious they've gotten, no? -- but before we reconnect with Victoria Beckham in Denver tonight, let's take the temperature of where things stand with the Golden Ticket-getters from Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, Orlando, Los Angeles, and Dallas. Check out my Top 20 countdown (hotlinks to all auditions included for those of you with faulty memories/lives outside the Idolverse), then vote for your favorite in the poll (after the jump). And if you're not already doin' it (and doin' it well), follow me on Twitter @EWMichaelSlezak.

Andrew Garcia told the cameras on tonight’s American Idol that he is breaking the cycle of violence in his family. Both of Andrew’s parents were involved in gangs and led “a crazy life,” and he claims that he is trying to give his son a better life.
“I’m a dad, and it’s the greatest thing in the world,” he said.
Andrew did Maroon 5 proud with his version of “Sunday Morning.” Simon Cowell was downright effusive in his praise for him, “You’re the only person who’s walked through today who I genuinely believe is a good singer,” he said.
Kara DioGuardi added, “You really knew what to emphasize and what not to emphasize.” Randy Jackson said he had “mad vocals,” and guest judge Katy Perry said that he gave her chills.

While EW's own Michael Slezak fully recapped last night's Katy- and Avril-infused audition episode of American Idol, there's always the lingering question of: What's already out there about the folks who won Golden Tickets to Hollywood? True, we only got info on five of the supposed 27 who are headed to the next round from Hollywood. But we searched around, and found the following on our Hollywood-bound contestants from Los Angeles: Mary Powers: The faux-rocker who Simon called "clichéd" and sang Pat Benatar's "Love is a Battlefield" doesn't have a MySpace presence (of if she does, we can't find...

It was Los Angeles' turn to strut its stuff in front of Randy, Simon, Kara and Paula's Seat Filler on Tuesday night's "American Idol," and as expected, a lot of out of work actors showed up to get some primetime shine from Fox. (Shockingly, Lindsay Lohan stayed home.)
The fame-whoring from the army of untalented made for frustrating lows throughout Tuesday's broadcast, but luckily there were a handful of auditions that made me sit up in my seat and start brainstorming ways to bedazzle names with terrible puns on giant poster-board.
Mary Powers (future sign will have black roses on it with the caption "Flowers For Powers") was my fave of the entire season so far. I have a thing for the rough-and-tumble rocker chicks that sound like they sucked down three packs of Virginia Slims before their audition. (The visible ink helps, too.) Did the stars come out for auditions in Los Angeles this week?
Only if you count guest judges Katy Perry and Avril Lavigne as stars.
There was a surprisingly weak crop of American Idol hopefuls on the air last night, as only 22 received golden tickets to Hollywood. One of them, however, appears to have true potential: Andrew Garcia.
Learn more about this aspiring singer, and a few others that stood out, in our complete American Idol rundown. Who was your favorite on the night?...

Katy Perry and Avril Lavigne took turns assisting "American Idol" judges to pick diamond in the rough in Los Angeles. From this city, the guest judges, Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson issued 22 golden tickets including to a pastor, a guy who has been a foster child, and a father who wants to give everything to his young son.
Pastor Jim Ranger who has three kids tried out with a self-penned song called "Drive". Although Ryan Seacrest said to his family waiting outside that impressing the judges with his own song will be difficult, Jim managed to put a smile on Simon's face. Avril lectured him about how hard life on the road could be and said no to him. The other three judges however, said yes. His ticket was the first issued on the L.A. audition.
A bunch of yes and no after, a guy named A.

Daniel Franco, double "Project Runway" ejectee, has taken up reality show hopping.
"American Idol" got a special visitor on its Los Angeles audition show Tuesday night (Jan. 26) when Franco showed up to pay tribute to Season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert.
"If Adam Lambert and Susan Boyle had sex, which is pretty farfetched," Franco quipped. "I'd be it, pretty much."
Franco was part a montage that included people who dressed like Lambert as an homage and to be noticed at the auditions. At 38, Franco exceeds the audition age limit of 28, so his presence was obviously a joke. It's no "Pants on the Ground," but we'll take it.
On the first season of "Project Runway," Franco was ignominiously booted out on the first episode. Undeterred, he pleaded his case and was accepted on the following season of "Project Runway." After a few highs and lows, he was eliminated in the fourth episode, inspiring...

Did you happen to catch Adam Lambert-wannabe Aj Mendoza on "American Idol?" His "Cult of Personality" left us saying no to the Kool-Aid.
Aj Mendoza should be called Aj Mush-mouth. Simon rightly said he sounded like he'd just been to the dentist. While there was some talent lurking in there, it was a really bad audition.
Adam Lambert was a one-time deal and someone would have to be extraordinarily special to get his wail on the way he did. Just be yourself, "Idol" hopefuls! Please!

Andrew Garcia was one of the best La auditions on "American Idol." Did you see his "Sunday Morning?"
Garcia, whose parents are hoping for a better life for him because they both came from gang backgrounds, did Maroon 5 proud with his "Sunday Morning" at the "Idol" auditions.
Simon was particularly impressed with Garcia, which is always nice to hear. We think Andrew might be one of the most contemporary-sounding male voices we've heard so far. What do you guys think?

Katy Perry and Avril Lavigne know exactly what it's like to have a musical dream. Both were once teenage girls who had to scrape and paw their way to pop stardom, which is why the youngest "American Idol" guest judges to date were perfect for the Los Angeles round of auditions.
Despite being the entertainment capital of the world, the L.A. auditions on Tuesday night's (January 26) "Idol" provided very few fireworks — except for the catty exchanges between Perry and fellow judge Kara DioGuardi, which were among the most entertaining moments on an otherwise lackluster evening.

This may be a first: An "American Idol" contestant pulling huge Internet traffic before he even appears on the show.
Such is the case, though, with one Andrew Garcia. He did not appear on Wednesday's (Jan. 20) audition episode, unless you count the preview for next week. Yet he shot into the top 20 of Google's trend list Wednesday night.
Here's what we know: Garcia is a Southern California native. He's got a Facebook fan page and a Myspace page and 5,000-plus followers on Twitter. From the looks of things, he appears on the L.A. audition episode next week -- he's the guy in the preview with the hat and glasses, hitting what sounds like a very clean note. He's also on the various leaked top 24 lists for this season.
But that's not a lot to go on -- particularly since the guy wasn't even named in the episode. So what gives,...

"American Idol's" Hollywood Week is essentially over -- which means the Top 24 has been chosen. Do not keep reading if you don't want to be spoiled because most names have leaked.
Between Joe's Place blog, Vote for the Worst and Mj's Big Blog, it seems there are 20 of the Top 24 out there already, all of the boys and eight of the girls. We've only seen a few of the Top 24 so far, but the ones we have seen have their audition city after their names (Ben Honeycutt we may not have actually seen in Atlanta, but that's where he auditioned).
