New York, Feb 23 (Ians) A team of engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US, has developed a custom robotic heart that can help doctors tailor treatments to patients’ specific heart form and function.
The engineers developed a procedure to 3D print a soft and flexible replica of a patient’s heart, including a patient’s aorta — the major artery that carries blood out of the heart to the rest of the body.
The team led by mechanical engineering professor Ellen Roche said they can then control the replica’s action to mimic that patient’s blood-pumping ability via fabricated sleeves similar to blood pressure cuffs that wrap around a printed heart and aorta. The underside of each sleeve resembles precisely patterned bubble wrap.
When the sleeve is connected to a pneumatic system, researchers can tune the outflowing air to rhythmically inflate the sleeve’s bubbles and contract the heart,...

Recently, I reported on the plans to reboot the Tomb Raider franchise with a character-driven origin story featuring a younger Lara Croft.
That means no more Angelina Jolie in the role. I mentioned some of the names put forward by fans and asked you - the readers of The Geek Files - to suggest who you wanted to see playing the new version of the action heroine.
I've taken what seem to be the most popular choices and created a poll on the right-hand side of the page where you can vote and comment.
Among the popular suggestions were some of the Lara Croft models who have portrayed the character in public appearances and promotions.
The first models included Katie Price (aka Jordan) and Nathalie Cook, and then Rhona Mitra who had the role from 1997-1998 and went on to appear in Doomsday and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans.
