The whole concept of art triumphing over every worldly problem sounds novel on paper, but it’s really hard to execute on screen. There’s a huge risk of things turning into a gimmicky mess. But that’s not the case with Steven Knight’s latest show, This Town, which is truly magnificent in every possible sense. It drops you in a world of chaos that is filled with genuinely likable characters worthy enough to root for. Engaging from the spectacular opening sequence of a riot breaking out to the final scene of a maddeningly beautiful concert, This Town is an ingenious piece of work. The 80s’ set Irish drama is a heady mix of many genres, from crime noir to coming of age to dysfunctional family drama to musical. Imagine if Sons of Anarchy was made by John Carney, and you get the idea!

Elena Avdija’s revelatory and nuanced documentary shines a light on the incredibly brave performers who face physical and emotional battles on and off screen
Travelling to film sets in France and the US, Elena Avdija’s revelatory documentary follows Virginie, Petra and Estelle, female stunt professionals who are at different stages of their career: fearless in their commitment to their craft, they brave countless battles both on and off screen. There’s a feel of the spaghetti western to how their names are introduced in big, splattery red letters while a guitar riff reverberates through the frame. They are, indeed, fierce riders in an industry still dominated by men.
The physical demands of stunt work, which includes everything from being pushed down a staircase to jumping off a building, are colossal. Still attending training courses, Estelle has to practise getting hit by a car or being held in chokehold.

Robert De Niro took the stage at the Kennedy Center on Sunday and, looking out at the balcony box where honoree Billy Crystal was sitting, told him of his career, “I had no idea you had done so much. And you’ve done it all in such a relatively short amount of time. You’re only 75. That means you’re just about six years away from being the perfect age to be elected president.”
The joke got some of the biggest audience cheers of the night — and a laugh from President Joe Biden, 81, embarking on a re-election campaign where his chronological advantage is, based on polls, top of mind to voters and the source of some doubts.
It was also one of a few references to age throughout Sunday evening’s Kennedy Center Honors which, in addition to Crystal, honored opera singer Renée Fleming, hip hop star and actress Queen Latifah,...

It’s been 10 years since Steven Universe unlocked his Gem ability to summon a shield as he savored the last of his beloved, now-discontinued frozen treat Cookie Cat.
What Rebecca Sugar initially introduced as a brightly colored animated series about a 13-year-old half-Gem, half-human boy raised by his three extraterrestrial guardians, soon became so much more. In its five-season run on Cartoon Network, “Steven Universe” navigated such themes as same-sex relationships, genocide, consent, grief and Ptsd — a groundbreaking feat for a series with a target demographic of six to 11-year-old boys.
“Everything was very difficult. At the time, that we were exploring Lgbtqia+ characters and storylines — it was really not something that was possible,” Sugar says. “I really do feel that we got to explore everything we’d hoped to, just maybe not in the exact order originally intended.”

Hawk hasn't been the easiest character to read, but Fellow Travelers Season 1 Episode 2 gave him some much-needed depth as we delved into his past, machinations, and desire to get posted overseas and live his best life.
When watching Fellow Travelers Season 1 Episode 1, it wasn't easy to connect with him because there were few consequences for his actions.
He's suave, smooth-talking, and somehow manages to command a room without effort.
Deep down, though, he's struggling because he knows that people wouldn't look twice at him if he were an out gay man.
Going back home to face his father after so many years away highlighted why Hawk fled home and got close to Lucy and, by extension, her father.
Knowing his father was dying didn't resonate with Hawk because he was still scarred from the past.
Hawk knew going into the family home, people would ask questions about his life in Washington D.

In the 1970s, Elvis Presley’s backup singers understood that he frequently made off-the-cuff comments during performances. It became a problem when he started making pointed and, eventually, outright rude comments about them. His remarks were so bad during one concert that many of his backup singers walked off the stage.
Elvis Presley’s backup singers walked offstage after a comment he made about them
During concerts in the mid-1970s, Elvis made a number of derogatory comments about one of his backup singers, Kathy Westmoreland. During one show, he took shots at all his backup singers. Per the book Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley by Peter Guralnick, Elvis told the audience he “smelled green peppers and onions and that his backup singers, the Sweet Inspirations, had probably been eating catfish.”
Given the comments Elvis had already been making about Westmoreland, the Sweet Inspirations worried his words would grow more insulting.

It’s 2003 and Jay-Z is planning a farewell concert at Madison Square Garden to celebrate his retirement from music.
But his bass player is unavailable. Adam Blackstone, a jack-of-all-trades who plays bass, drums, piano, organ, tuba and sousaphone — and is also a songwriter, producer, composer and everything else under the musical sun — is more than ready to step in.
Twenty years later, Blackstone, now 40, is still working closely with Jay-Z; both are Emmy winners for last year’s hip-hop-heavy Super Bowl halftime show. And the musician who has helped everyone from Rihanna to Justin Timberlake shine is stepping into his own limelight.
Rihanna performed during the Super Bowl Lvii halftime show in February.
After winning an Emmy in 2022 for music direction, Blackstone is nominated again. This time, however, he’s a double nominee. Not only is he competing for his work on Rihanna’s explosive Super Bowl performance (a nom...

During her summer vacations growing up, Dolly Parton used to stay with her Aunt Estelle and Uncle Dot Watson in Knoxville, Tennessee. It was in Knoxville that she realized she could play guitar with her case on the ground and get money from people walking by. She also realized that the more “pitiful” she looked, the more money she got.
How Dolly Parton unknowingly started busking
One day, Parton got off the bus in Knoxville a little early. So she sat down with her guitar and started to play.
“I was just playing for myself, but after a while a few people started to gather around,” Parton wrote in her 1994 memoir, Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business. “This one couple, who looked like they were from out of town, stopped and heard one whole song and part of another.”
The woman told Parton, “You sing real purty, honey.”

Dolly Parton got up to some wild things as a little girl growing up in the mountains of East Tennessee. Burying horse poop in the ground and diligently watering it in hopes that a pony would grow, for example. Here’s the story of how Parton and her siblings believed they could grow ponies.

Parton’s uncle Dot Watson (married to the singer’s mother’s sister Estelle) was a playful guy. TV Academy… please don’t let Beverly Goldberg leave this world without an Emmy nomination.
If one asked Wendi McLendon-Covey how she created the lovable and zany mom from “The Goldbergs,” I’d imagine she’d use one of the overbearing matriarch’s famous lines delivered to a random stranger regarding the origins of her three children: “I made these people. Me. I made them with my body.”
With an undeniable “schmoop” factor and countless “huggies,” McLendon-Covey made the unapologetic “smotherer” with her body, heart and soul. Her phenomenal work in the ABC comedy series will surely be one of the finest in sitcom history, and we’re all the better for it.

John Legend review, Royal Albert Hall: This no-frills, intimate concert shows the singer at his best
“We’re gonna get to know each other better tonight,” John Legend promises his audience, speaking smoothly over an easy piano melody. Billed as An Evening with John Legend, tonight’s concept is simple: just Legend, his voice, his life story and a piano. It’s a bold choice to stage an entire two-act Royal Albert Hall show alone with no accompaniment, but if there’s anyone who can keep an audience entertained for two hours, it’s Legend. His agile voice and virtuoso pianist skills shine when left to stand alone, even if the bare-bones nature of the staging is a little startling.

Power Book II: Ghost Season 3 will premiere shortly, and Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.) is already declaring that he’s better at the drug game than his late father, James “Ghost” St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick). While Tariq has certainly mastered some things over the years, he’s not, in fact, smarter than Ghost.
In fact, the college student/drug dealer is in for a rude awakening.
Michael Rainey Jr. as Tariq St. Patrick in ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ | Starz Does Ghost live in ‘Power’?
In Power’s sixth and final season, the show that proceeds Power Book II: Ghost, Tariq shoots and kills his father in cold blood. After years of lies and deception that resulted in the loss of his twin sister Raina (Donshea Hopkins), the demise of his parent’s marriage, and the complete loss of respect for his father, Tariq decided he’d had enough.

James St. Patrick is gone but definitely not forgotten. His spirit lives on via his son Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.) as is evident in the trailer for Season 3 of the hit Starz series Power Book II: Ghost, above.
The show returns with new episodes on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day.
The trailer shows Tariq really coming into his own as part of the underworld and finding comfort in spaces his father did. Like the strip clubs and nightclubs that conjure up memories of being at Truth, wheeling and dealing, in the flagship series Power.
The young St. Patrick even has his own “Tommy” by his side, Brayden (Gianni Paolo), and they’re looking to make Wall Street-level money. Method Man’s Davis MacLean has stepped out of the courtroom and into a bigger role in Tariq’s life. With the guidance of a smart and diligent attorney, the sky is the limit.

Before capturing her first pair of Grammys last year, R&b star Jazmine Sullivan was the female artist with the most nominations without winning, tied with Björk.
So, a year later at a pre-Grammy event, Sullivan joked with the audience as she sang songs from her critically acclaimed, Grammy-winning project, Heaux Tales.
“I think I won last year for best R&b…,” she said coyly with her mouth open. “I won? Did I win a…? I think I won…,” she continued, laughing as the crowd cheered her on.
Sullivan won best R&b album for Heaux Tales, her daring and bold album that explores feminism, sexuality, classism and body shaming. She also tied Silk Sonic’s “Leave the Door Open” to win best R&b performance for “Pick Up Your Feelings,” which she performed to close her four-song set at the Grey Goose x GRAMMYs: Sound Sessions Brunch.

The star presumably had one eye on the paycheque in this by-the-numbers thriller about a debt collector punching and shooting his way to bloody revenge
Antonio Banderas is a class act but there’s only so much class he can reasonably be expected to supply. Taking what was presumably an attractive paycheque, Banderas stars in a movie whose essential personality could only be appreciated if Blockbuster Video were to be brought back to life, just for one week, so this could be placed in the straight-to-video bin next to every till.
Veteran screenwriter W Peter Ilff (who co-wrote Point Break) has dug this one out of his desk drawer and Australian adman-turned-film-maker Richard Hughes directs. Banderas plays ’Cuda (short for Barracuda), a careworn Miami debt collector and ex-con, working for Estelle (Kate Bosworth), scary club owner and mob boss. Not to be confused with the Clint Eastwood Enforcer (1976) or the Humphrey Bogart Enforcer (1951), this cheap and cheerful crime thriller stars Antonio Banderas as a strong-arm man who turns against his employers. As such, it’s entirely watchable and made with a degree of style, but it’s also predictably generic and occasionally laughable in its simplicity.
The Enforcer opens with one of those prologue sequences that immediately gives away the ending, as Banderas’ Cuda (short for Barracuda) reflects on what brought him to his current blood-soaked state. The rest of the story is then told in flashback, with Cuda taking new enforcer Stray under his wing, while working for slinky Miami mob boss Estelle.

Louise Fletcher, the sweet actress from Alabama who won an Academy Award for her turn as the heartless Nurse Ratched — one of the most reviled characters in movie history — in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, has died. She was 88.
Fletcher died Friday of natural causes at her home in Montdurausse, France, her son Andrew Bick told The Hollywood Reporter. She had survived two bouts with breast cancer.
A daughter of deaf parents — she made one of the most touching acceptance speeches in Oscar history — Fletcher also starred as a psychiatrist in Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977) and played opposite Peter Falk amid the star-studded ensemble in The Cheap Detective (1978).
On television, she portrayed the religious leader Kai Winn Adami on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and received Emmy nominations in 1996 and 2004 for her guest-starring stints on Picket Fences and Joan of Arcadia, respectively.

Miami kingpin Estelle (Kate Bosworth) is looking for insurance. Not because she doesn’t trust her usual muscle Cuda (Antonio Banderas) anymore, but because she’s not sure how much time he has left in the tank let alone how well he’s going to adapt to a world running on online currency. Stuck in jail for a decade, his return is therefore just in time to train his replacement: a street fighter named Stray (Mojean Aria) who makes a living always battling above his weight class. The assumption is that he already has what it takes physically to handle himself when collecting Estelle’s taxes from the gangsters and lowlifes operating in her territory. So, if he learns even a fraction of Cuda’s patience and experience, he’ll turn out just fine.

“Tough guy with heart of gold” is the cliché that provides the gist to “The Enforcer,” and nothing much turns up to refresh or complicate that hoary hook. This criminal-underworld thriller benefits from Antonio Banderas’ star charisma as a veteran mob strong-arm who turns against his own organization in order to rescue an imperiled teen. Richard Hughes’ feature directorial debut also elevates matters somewhat with a slick and stylish presentation. But the results remain too hogtied by original “Point Break” scribe W. Peter Iliff’s routine, elemental screenplay to rise above the level of disposable genre fodder.
Cuda (Banderas) is just out of prison, having dutifully taken the heat for deeds done in service to Miami syndicate boss Estelle (Kate Bosworth). Steven Universe is one of our favorite cartoons ever and so we were really excited to get to interview them at Comic Con.
We talked to Zach Callison (who is not only the voice of Steven, but also of Prince James in Sofia the First), Ian Jones-Quartey (storyboarded/animator), Michaela Dietz (Amethyst), Deedee Magno Hall (Pearl….who Anya has been singing along to since she was 2 years old — no kidding, Deedee was Jasmine in the Aladdin Spectacular at Disney’s California Adventure), Estelle (Garnet), and Rebecca Sugar, the show’s composer & creator, who incidentally was shattering glass ceilings as the first woman to independently create a series for Cartoon Network! What’s really cool about Rebecca, as you’ll find out in our interview is that she’s a bit of a musical theatre geek like us. She not only got a song idea from Sweeney Todd, but she quotes Bob Fosse too.

Empire is huge. Massive. A phenomenon. The drama kicked off in the States earlier this year and quickly established itself as one of the biggest things on the box (seriously - over 23 million people tuned in to its finale last month. Twenty-three Million).
Now, we're finally getting a chance to see the show in the UK courtesy of E4, but is it worth the hype? Yes... and here are 7 reasons why you should be tuning in to the show...
1. The story is rooted in family - but we're talking mad, crazy, Dynasty-style family.
Make no bones about it - Empire is a soap. We're talking high glamour and high nonsense; it's a glossy whirlwind with surprise twists and 'rich people problems'. But while there's a shiny sheen to the whole thing, given that it's set in the world of hip-hop royalty, it's also firmly rooted in family.

There’s no stopping Empire.
In addition to breaking records each week for its unparalleled TV ratings, the show is also dominating the music charts.
The soundtrack to the hit Fox series landed at no. 1 on the Billboard 200 beating out Madonna’s highly publicized new album, Rebel Heart. According to Billboard, the two albums were close in sales with the Empire soundtrack outselling Madge by nearly 10,000 units.

Have you enjoyed the Empire guest stars this season? Do you agree that there’s one special performer who can arguably take the already successful show to the next level? Beyoncé Oprah might be closer to linking up with Cookie than you think. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, co-creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong (yes, Doyle from Gilmore Girls) revealed some of what they’re cooking up for the second season — and yes, it involves the billionaire media queen.

Every gal wants to find a knight in shining armor, right?
Well, one little girl found hers when famed fashion photographer Nigel Baker planted a kiss on her hand Thursday night at Make-a-Wish Foundation's 30th Anniversary "An Evening Of Wishes" gala. Swoon!
The adorable moment happened on the event's red carpet and looked liked something out of a Disney movie.
Barker, dressed in a shiny silver suit (read: shining armor), knelt down on one knee to salute the little lady, who was decked out in full fairy princess attire -- tiara, magic wand and all. We're not sure if being charmed by a dashing celeb was her official Make-a-Wish request, but either way it's pretty darn sweet.
