Former President Donald Trump demanded President Joe Biden take a drug test before their first debate. At the Minnesota Republican Party’s Lincoln Reagan Dinner on Friday, Trump claimed Biden was “high as a kite” during the State of the Union address.
“I’m gonna demand a drug test, too, by the way. I am, no, I really am. I don’t want him coming in like the State of the Union; he was as high as a kite,” Trump stated.
In a radio interview with Hugh Hewitt, Trump accused Biden of being high on cocaine during the speech. “I think what happened is, you know, that white stuff that they happened to find, which happened to be cocaine in the White House, I don’t know, I think something’s going on there because I watched this State of the Union and he was all jacked up at the beginning.

During a billionaire’s fundraiser in Palm Beach, Florida, Donald Trump implied that his opponent, President Joe Biden, had soiled himself on the Resolute Desk. This famed presidential desk sits in the Oval Office.
Trump made these comments in front of a crowd of very wealthy guests. He slammed Biden’s border policy and criticized him for making poor decisions while sitting at the Resolute Desk, which Britain’s Queen Victoria had gifted to the United States in 1880.
“The Resolute Desk is beautiful,” the former president stated during a 45-minute presentation at a dinner hosted by investor John Paulson on April 6. “Ronald Reagan used it, others used it.”
“And [Biden is] using it,” Trump said. “I might not use it the next time. It’s been soiled. And I mean that literally, which is sad.”
Trump reportedly sounded “disgusted.” Guests laughed at Trump’s comment.

Former President Donald Trump accused President Joe Biden of being high on cocaine during his State of the Union speech last month and demanded that the president take a drug test before future debates.
“I think what happened is you know that white stuff that they happened to find, which happened to be cocaine in the White House, I don’t know, I think something’s going on there, because I watched this State of the Union, and he was all jacked up at the beginning,” Trump said during an interview with the conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt.
Trump was referencing the discovery last summer of a powdered substance in the White House, which later tested positive for cocaine. The Secret Service was unable to determine who left it there but speculated it was a visitor.
“By the end, he was fading fast,” Trump added. “There’s something going on there.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has agreed to a 30-day delay on Trump’s upcoming hush money trial in New York.
In a Thursday filing, Bragg wrote that his office had received “approximately 31,000 pages of additional records” from the US Attorney’s Office (Usao) and would “not oppose a brief adjournment of up to 30 days to permit sufficient time for defendant to review the Usao productions.”
Trump was indicted in March of last year on 34 felony charges related to the former president’s hush-money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election.

California Governor Gavin Newsom weighed in on the presidential prospects of his Florida counterpart and frequent foe, Ron DeSantis, while declaring the race for the Republican nomination all but over.
“DeSantis is toast,” Newsom said today at an event in Orange County. “That’s self evident. I don’t think he’s even spending much time in New Hampshire, given up on that. I don’t know what state he can win in a primary, so that’s for certain.”
DeSantis placed a distant second in the Iowa caucuses to Donald Trump this week, but he is far behind in the polls in New Hampshire, which has its primary on Tuesday, and instead has been concentrating more on South Carolina, which has its primary on Feb. 24.

Media-wise, the 2024 presidential election crosses the official starting line with debate season, and this cycle the contenders on the Republican side, including a multiple-indicted former Potus, are looking to beat Democrat Joe Biden and take over the White House. But first they have to take on one another.
For the candidates, debates are a way to score points against a rival, stand out from the field or define a campaign that’s heretofore been rudderless.

Front-runner Trump has opted out of all the debates so far. In August, he instead decided to hold forth with Tucker Carlson in a more friendly pre-taped interview. That debate drew 12.8 million viewers on Fox News. He also did not participate in the September 27 debate in Simi Valley, CA, which drew 9.5 million viewers across Fox Business and Univision and simulcast on Fox News.

NBC said that average of 7.51 million viewers watched the third Republican debate Wednesday night across the broadcast network, streaming and digital, marking a drop from the previous two GOP debates this cycle.
The figure is still a relatively solid number, but it’s off from the 9.5 million who watched the second debate in September and the 12.8 million who watched the first in August. Fox Business and Fox News hosted those debates, respectively. The debate audiences also are off from the blockbuster figures of the 2016 cycle, when Donald Trump first ran for president. Trump has so far skipped all of the GOP debates this cycle.
Wednesday night’s debate from Miami averaged 6.86 million viewers on NBC.
The debate was also streamed on NBC News Now, which saw its largest average primetime audience ever and its highest peak audience on record, according to a network spokesperson, although the underlying streaming numbers were not released.

Update: As expected, Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis clashed at the third Republican debate, engaging in extended tussles and accusations that the other has been coddling China.
Their clashes were largely between themselves, with relatively little time spent on the runaway front runner in the race, Donald Trump.
Haley has been critical of Trump in previous debates for running up the deficit, and DeSantis tonight ran through a list of criticisms, including why he didn’t “drain the swamp.” But neither candidate engaged in the kind of sustained barrage of Trump that would be expected, particularly since the former president has not only skipped the debate and belittled them, he has been counter programming the events.
“This is the debate … in case Donald Trump chokes on a cheeseburger,” MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell said in some of the post-commentary.

When five Republican presidential candidates take the stage at Wednesday night’s debate in Miami, host network NBC is hoping to limit the number of moments where candidates talk over one another.
That was one of the features of the last Republican debate, marked by instances of unintelligible verbal tussles. At one point, Vivek Ramaswamy shot back at Sen. Tim Scott (R-Sc), “Thank you for speaking while I am interrupting — interrupting while I am speaking.”
This time around, there will be two fewer candidates on the stage, something that could ease a bit of the pressure on contenders to make their mark during the two-hour time frame. In addition to Ramaswamy and Scott, former Un ambassador Nikki Haley, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have qualified.

When NBC News broadcasts the third Republican debate from Miami on Wednesday, it will be a slimmed-down field.
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Un ambassador Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy and Sen. Tim Scott (R-dc) made the cut.
The Republican National Committee increased the criteria for participation, with candidates needing at least 70,000 campaign donors and 4% support in at least two national polls, or one national poll or two early state polls.
Candidates also need to have signed a loyalty pledge to support the eventual nominee, something that has kept frontrunner Donald Trump from qualifying. But the former president has indicated that he plans to skip all of the debates, and is counter-programming this week’s debate with a rally in south Florida.
NBC News is hosting the debate from the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, set to air from 8-10 p.

His absence likely will be brought up at the debate, especially since Chris Christie will be on stage. The former New Jersey governor has staked much of his campaign on criticizing Trump.

The Republican National Committee is threatening to boycott the next general election presidential debates, even though the next matchup of the nominees won’t take place for more than three years.
RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel’s letter to the Commission on Presidential Debates calls for a series of changes, including on how the commission selects debate moderators and on the scheduling of the events.
But the letter also airs a list of grievances that could have come from Donald Trump himself. The former president railed against the commission, a bipartisan body set up in 1988 to host the debates, not just last year but in 2016.
During the most recent cycle, the most significant flare-up was over the planned second debate, which was to be in a town hall format. But after Trump contracted Covid-19, the commission altered plans and switched the format to a virtual event. After Trump rejected the change,...

Donald Trump’s reelection campaign is requesting that the first presidential debate between the president and Joe Biden be held in early September, while it has provided organizers with a list of recommended moderators.
The list, below, is heavy in Fox News personalities, yet does not include Chris Wallace. He moderated a debate in the 2016 cycle, but recently interviewed Trump for Fox News Sunday in a widely praised hour-long exchange in which he, at multiple points, fact-checked the president’s assertions.
Trump’s campaign argues that the first debate, now scheduled for Sept. 29, will take place after early voting has begun in 16 states. Two other presidential debates are scheduled for Oct. 15 and Oct. 22. The Trump campaign also continued its call for debate planners to a fourth debate to the schedule in early September, but said that if that does not happen, the Oct. 22 event should be moved to that date.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-ny) took a portion of his daily coronavirus press briefing on Thursday to blasting Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s suggestions that struggling states and cities should go bankrupt rather than seek federal assistance in another relief bill.
“If there was ever a time to stop your obsessive political bias and anger, which is what it’s morphed into … now is the time,” Cuomo said. “And you want to divide this nation now – with all that’s going on? How irresponsible, and how reckless.”

A stalwart Democrat plus Fox News Channel? That’s a recipe for making sparks fly. But Donna Brazile says she’s not looking for a fight when she appears on the cable-news outlet.
Brazile, the former campaign manager for Al Gore in 2000 and a one-time interim chair of the Democratic National Committee, was named a Fox News contributor in March, and since that time has made appearances on everything from “Fox & Friends” to “The Five.” She says she’s ready to hold forth in any timeslot the network wants to put her – even if it’s during Fox News’ opinion-led primetime block, where the hosts are often supportive of President Trump.
“I’m not saying I don’t have strong views. I have strong views,” says Brazile during a recent wide-ranging phone interview. “I think it’s important to be civil.”

Today hosts Hoda Kotb, Craig Melvin, Al Roker, and Savannah Guthrie moved seamlessly into the third hour of the show this morning, after NBC announced Friday it had cancelled Megyn Kelly Today in the wake of Kelly’s defense of blackface Halloween costumes.
“Today, as you know, we are starting a new chapter in the third hour of our show,” Kotb said at 9 Am. “As it evolves, we want you to know the entire Today family will continue to bring you informative and important stories, just as we always have.”
And Jenna Bush Hager, who had been part of the all-white panel to whom Kelly addressed her career-stomping Halloween costume comments, re-appeared Monday in the hour to introduce another Halloween walk-up segment – this one, however, the kind of “showing you the scariest places in the country” puffery morning-show viewers expect. In his announcement, Hewitt said that he would remain on the cable news network as a contributor and guest, continue to appear on NBC's Meet the Press, and would conduct more one-on-one interviews. A time-honored network upfronts tradition is when a late night star comes out to roast his network, and Seth Meyers didn’t disappoint. Meyers opened his portion of NBC’s upfront presentation on Monday morning with a Matt Lauer quip that both surprised and delighted the audience of advertisers.
“It’s not surprising for NBC to be dramatic, we are home to the number one drama on television,” Meyers said. “A show that each week gives us twists and turns, heartbreaking reveals, and this season the departure of a once beloved character. I’m talking of course of, ‘This Is the Today Show.'”
He added: “Hoda Kotb replaced Matt Lauer as co-anchor of the ‘Today Show’ this year and she has been incredible. Everyone here at NBC is so proud of Hoda. Although, I’m not sure Kathy Lee is happy about it. I saw her drinking at 10 a.
