Although he only tallied 15 stolen bases in his playing career, his most
memorable "stolen base" occurred as Pittsburgh Pirates manager on June 26, 2001. In a game
against the Milwaukee Brewers, McClendon became so enraged with the
umpiring that he ripped out first base and carried it off into the
dugout. Rather than try to retrieve the base, the umpires replaced the
base with a new one.
