New York Mets fans know him by his given name of Larry. ESPN viewers will soon know him as an analyst.
Larry “Chipper” Jones, a baseball Hall of Famer, will serve as an analyst on 20 games of ESPN’s Wednesday Night Baseball broadcasts, according to an Atlanta Journal Constitution report on Saturday.
Jones will replace David Ross, who left the booth to become the manager of the Chicago Cubs.
“A lot of people don’t know this, but if I hadn’t played baseball, if I had gone to college, I would have majored in communications,” Jones told the Ajc website. “I wanted to be a broadcaster. I really have fun talking the game. I feel like I have something to impart upon the people tuning in, and I have fun doing it. I get the chance to do it on probably the biggest stage you can, maybe next to...

There are few topics that get baseball fans more riled up than the question of who should (or should not) be in the Hall of Fame. People tend to take that shit extremely personally, as if denying your pet case for induction a plaque in Cooperstown — or giving one to an "undeserving" player ahead of him — is somehow tantamount to negating your fandom, your childhood or even your very existence as a human being.

Trouble with the Curve
Directed by Robert Lorenz
Written by Randy Brown
USA, 2012
For someone who puts on a brave face about the subject or would rather ignore it, Clint Eastwood is obsessed with aging. In movies like Million Dollar Baby and Gran Torino, Eastwood portrays, for all intents and purposes, a version of himself who’s facing down the Grim Reaper. He’s been Clint Eastwood as a grumpy boxing trainer and Clint Eastwood as a grumpy retired factory worker, a grizzled elder statesman who tries with all his mental might to act as if he’s a much more youthful man, but whose physical well-being begs to differ. With his leading role in Trouble with the Curve, Eastwood plays Clint Eastwood as a grumpy old baseball scout who doesn’t want to admit he’s getting too old for this racket. Like Eastwood, Trouble with the Curve is a reliable,...

Deadline reported yesterday that Universal has offered the Bourne franchise directing gig to Tony Gilroy, who wrote the previous Bourne films and also directed Michael Clayton and what I thought was an underrated Duplicity.
With Gilroy on board, Matt Damon is now put in an awkward position. He stated previously that he wouldn't make another Bourne film without Paul Greengrass (who directed the last two installments), but Universal is insisting that they'll make it with or without him. Damon then will be forced to choose between his loyalty to Greengrass and his allegiance to the Bourne character, which made Damon the international superstar he is now. Does he let that franchise go to shit with someone like Matthew McConaughey or Sam Worthington, or does he return, reasoning that Tony Gilroy is a decent compromise.
It looks like Universal is playing chicken with Damon, and I'd like to believe that, if Damon calls their bluff,...

Tom Glavine did not wish to retire and so the Atlanta Braves, who did not want him anymore, did him the courtesy of releasing him. Perhaps another club, in need of left-handed pitching will sign him. There is talk of interest from the Dodgers and Phillies. But Milwaukee, in need of an arm, passed, having concluded that the Braves had not been encouraged by Glavine's seemingly fine rehab performance in the low minors. Glavine is 43 and is destined for enshrinement in Cooperstown. His return to Atlanta after five years in New York last season was injury-marred, and that only deepened what his longtime teammate, Chipper Jones, says is the enduring sting of having pitched his worst when it mattered most, in the finale of the Mets' 2007 collapse. A dreadful way to close things out for a pitcher who has...

Alyssa Milano has sworn off dating baseball players, because they are too childish.
The actress admits she is a huge fan of the sport, and even dreams of being a star slugger.
But, after dating Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Brad Penny and Atlanta Braves star Tom Glavine, she's determined to court more mature men, like her current mystery beau, known only as "David".
Milano says, "They are grown men playing a little boy's sport. That makes them childish."
The actress, who has designed a range of Major League Baseball-approved sportswear and has her own baseball blog, admits she's such a huge fan of the sport, she dreams up game scenarios when she's trying to get to sleep.
She adds, "My stress reliever is usually baseball. In fact, sometimes when I can't sleep - because my mind is racing - I close my eyes and think about being at the stadium. I create game-winning situations.
"I think of the sound of the bat cracking. And you know what? It usually works."...
