Known for his "eephus" pitch, a very slow, high-arching lob that
befuddled many batters. The first player to hit an eephus pitch for a
home run was Red Sox slugger Ted Williams, who accomplished the feat in the
1946 major league All-Star Game.
Made major league debut on 14 June 1932.
In 1943 led the National League in wins (21) and complete games
(25).
Pitcher with the American League's Detroit Tigers (1932) and the
National League's Pittsburgh Pirates (1938-1949).
