The artist behind some truly unforgettable videogame covers, Bob Wakelin, has sadly passed away.
His artwork appeared on some of the best and most beloved games of the 1980s. New Zealand Story, Batman, Rainbow Island, RoboCop, Renegade, Chase HQ... the list is remarkably long. British artist Bob Wakelin was a key part of the UK games industry, and while not a household name, necessarily, his output was extraordinary - and in some cases, far more exciting than the products his artwork helped bring to life.

Saboteur? BMX Ninja? Ninja Golf? Shadow Warriors? The Last Ninja? We dissect the ninja videogames of the 1980s...
When I was a kid, I picked what I wanted to be when I grew up based on computer games rather than actual life experience. First, thanks to Lunar Jetman, I wanted to be an astronaut. Then Elevator Action and Impossible Mission convinced me a spy would be an even cooler job. Winter Games and, uh, Horace Goes Skiing made me think I had a shot at the Olympic Slalom. By the time I got to playing Tapper, running a redneck bar that only served Budweiser to furious cowboys looked like a solid option too.
I didn’t end up doing any of those things in real life, but one thing I did pick up from gaming that’s never gone away was an obsession with ninjas. At the...

The poster for Pulp Fiction, as a Zx Spectrum loading screen? We've got 22 movie posters right here...
Because it’s Friday, we figure we’re allowed to do this. That said, any piece for the site that could overlap the beloved Zx Spectrum with movies is always something we’re likely to be fair game for. But we'll stick with the Friday excuse for now.
Many of us on the site were children of the Zx Spectrum (metaphorically speaking, lest you feel we’re low rent versions of what happens – spoiler – at the end of Superman III). And one of the charms of the Spectrum home computer was the loading screen that it took 30 seconds or so to draw, while you were waiting for Daley Thompson’s Decathlon to load.
This being the era of the modern internet, it turns out that you can now...

We certainly felt the power of 10 former Gladiators yesterday, as we took a look at what some of the stars went on to after the success of ITV's '90s hit.
We were bowled over to discover that Blaze (Eunice Huthart) is a stunt double to A-listers and godmother to Angelina Jolie's daughter Shiloh, and that Rhino (Mark Smith) went on to star in Hollywood films including Ben Affleck's Oscar-winning drama Argo.
But whatever happened to the villainous Wolf or the infamous Shadow, who was dramatically sacked from the series? We haven't found many current pictures of this lot, but here's a little bit about what 9 more of our favourite former Gladiators got up to after their time on the show:
1. Scorpio (Nikki Diamond)
Contenders were subjected to the mighty sting of the speedy Scorpio. Former bodybuilder and model Nikki Diamond was an original Gladiator, but was forced...

Have you ever wondered what Jet, Wolf, and the rest of ITV's Gladiators did after the show finished? Wonder no more...
ITV’s Gladiators - the show that for eight years made children everywhere become interested in sports, eating well and keeping fit... for about five minutes on a Saturday night, then we all went back to our natural state of sitting on the settee eating sugar straight from the packet.
What was it that inspired this minor surge of enthusiasm for being buff? That would be the gladiators themselves. Every week, twelve superhuman powerhouses - six men and six women - would intimidate, bully, and otherwise humiliate whichever puny contestants stepped up to try their luck, beating or hindering them in a series of physical skill games. This took place before the big finale – where the contenders would race each other up a downwards escalator, while the gladiators were...

Last year, GTA V became the fastest-selling piece of entertainment in history. Total War: Rome II, SimCity and Tomb Raider also came out last year, and were big hits. Part of me is overjoyed that my favourite entertainment medium is now so hugely popular. Yet another part of me wishes it was still more of a niche pursuit, as it was in the 1980 and 90s.
I cut my gaming teeth on an Amstrad Cpc (thank you Lord Sugar). It had a keyboard, a disk drive, and a green screen. Whenever I saw my dad trying to work on this thing I would be amazed, dazzled and aghast at just how ridiculously dull and turgid the beast was. Just lines and numbers on a green screen generating more numbers and lines.

Tuesday (July 31), Michael Phelps made history by winning his 19th Olympic medal, which makes him the most decorated Olympian across all sports and countries. But a couple people don't think that makes him the greatest Olympian of all time.
Larisa Latynina, the woman whose record Phelps broke, an 18-time medal winner in gymnastics, tells Yahoo, "Do I think I am still the greatest Olympian? Why yes, but that is my opinion. Why do I think this? Well, I did not only compete in three Olympic Games and won many medals, but the Soviet Union team had very great success when I was the coach."
She adds, "I have met [Michael Phelps] and I liked him. He was a nice person and, of course, he is a great swimmer. It is special what he has done."
And she's not the only one who thinks the topic is up for debate. London Olympics director Sebastian Coe,...

It’s hard to predict who the “chosen one” will be to light the Olympic torch today, but the Internet is abuzz with contenders.
Sir Roger Bannister is currently the favorite for the task. Bannister, 83, became the first man to break the four-minute mile in 1954. Former English decathlete Daley Thompson is also in the mix.
In the past, torch lighters have included members of royalty, global icons, and young, up-and-commers as well; Prince William (and potentially wife Kate Middleton) or 22-year-old basketball player Amber Charles, who played a key role in London’s bid to host the 2012 Olympics, could also light the flame.

News’ Olympics coverage will change that. While E! News starts its coverage from London today, Jenner’s first day on air will be Friday, the date of the Opening Ceremony. His primary role will be interviewing athletes and celebs in the studio. “I’ve been...

Shaun Williamson has revealed that he came "perilously close" to entering the Celebrity Big Brother house earlier this year. Williamson, who famously played Barry Evans in EastEnders for a decade, said that the only reason his stint in the reality show was aborted was because of the tension levels between the housemates. The actor, who is launching a Daz Cleaner Close TV ad with Olympian Daley Thompson, said that he was prepared to make a "total tit" of himself on the Channel 5 reality show. "I was perilously close to having to go into the Big Brother house on a task, but in the end it got so violent, well aggressive, they said I couldn't go in," he told Digital Spy. "Towards the end of the celebrity one, one of the twins was going to sue someone for (more)...
