- Although he tallied over 7,000 assists in his long and successful NBA career, one of his most memorable ones came on April 28, 2003 after his playing career ended. Before a playoff game in Portland, when thirteen-year-old Natalie Gilbert forgot the words to the National Anthem, he walked out on the court, stood beside her, and sang with her to help her get through the song.
