John Murdy, creative director for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood, remembers when he realized how popular the annual after-hours event had gotten. “When my first daughter was born, I was going to get diapers and had somebody come up to me and go, ‘Can I take a picture?’ I’m like, ‘Can I put the diapers down?’” Murdy says, laughing. “Now it’s everywhere in a movie star kind of way, which is really bizarre because I do something in a theme park.”
Murdy’s experience speaks to theme parks’ growing share of the $12 billion Halloween seasonal industry. “Halloween never actually ends,” says Philip Hernandez, editor of the Haunted Attraction Network. “You have the Midsummer Scream, Halloween conventions, trade shows. Haunts will open for Krampus all through December, and then January is our first buying convention.”

Everyone has their benchmark for when "Spooky Season" officially starts. Mine? Universal Hollywood's Halloween Horror Nights. It's not just a collection of haunted houses and maniacs with (safe to use) chainsaws revving in your face. Halloween Horror Nights is a communal celebration where we face our fears together, laugh-scream with strangers, and maybe sip specialty cocktails in the process (the Die-Tai at Isla Nu-Bar gets my recommendation). That's all thanks to John Murdy, creative director and executive producer of Halloween Horror Nights here in Los Angeles, and his amazing collaborators.
How does this year stack against past years? Hollywood is still the scrappier sibling compared to Orlando. Hollywood spans less space and receives less attention, and that means Murdy's team faces more challenges. If your only option is Universal Hollywood, please take advantage of Halloween Horror Nights as always — just don't watch any YouTube walkthrough videos out of Orlando.

Any Universal Studios tourist worth their weight in candy rock-salt knows Stage 12 — but the historic filming location can be seen like never before at Halloween Horror Nights 2024.
An original haunted house with an all-female cast, “Universal Monsters: Eternal Bloodlines” can be found inside the famous building on the studio’s sprawling California backlot. Built in 1929, Stage 12 has been around for almost a century and is still among the most culturally significant film stages in the world.
“I’ve talked about it a lot, but I don’t think you can talk about it enough,” the event’s creative director John Murdy told IndieWire during opening night. “The fact that we’re doing a house this year on the very soundstage where ‘Frankenstein’ was filmed in 1931, where ‘Dracula’ was filmed in 1931, where ‘The Bride of Frankenstein’ was filmed in 1935, et cetera. That’s just so cool and something that could only happen at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Halloween Horror Nights 2024 advertises itself as home to a ground-breaking haunted house incorporating American Sign Language (Asl) “for the very first time.”
That’s a tough claim to prove considering the scope of the country’s Halloween scene and the countless underground attractions hidden therein. But at least at Universal Studios’ mega-popular annual event, the new “A Quiet Place” experience is indeed making history.
“What I was so impressed by when I first saw John Krasinski’s film was the level of detail that he went to to tell an authentic story, particularly with the character of Regan,” creative director John Murdy told IndieWire during the event’s opening night on September 5 at Universal Studios Hollywood. (The attraction is available at Universal Studios Florida in Orlando as well.)

Halloween Horror Nights has returned to Universal Studios Hollywood and Orlando this month, running through Halloween. To get hyped, Bloody Disgusting’s Vanessa Decker and Rawl Paredes took an early tour of two highly anticipated attractions in Hollywood.
First up is a brand-new maze inspired by the A Quiet Place franchise, based on the first two films. The maze relies heavily on sound design, with speakers placed closer to guests as they walk through. Additionally, American Sign Language (Asl) will be featured throughout the maze. A deaf actress, who works at Universal, portrays Regan in the opening video as guests enter. Scare actors in the maze have been taught Asl, but their role is not to scare—none of them will.
Creative Director John Murdy has expressed excitement for this highly anticipated house, noting that all the creatures were built practically since CGI was used in the films. The maze...

Halloween Horror Nights is back for another terrifying spooky season at Universal Studios Hollywood, opening September 5th and running on select nights through November 3rd. With eight chilling mazes, exclusive food and beverage selections, and a reimagined Terror Tram as one of the Universal Studios Hollywood rides still open during Halloween Horror Nights 2024, there is a lot for guests to enjoy. Fans of the A Quiet Place franchise will be thrilled to learn that one of the new mazes follows the events of the first two films, putting guests right in the middle of the action as they must hide and remain silent so they do not attract the dangerous creatures.
Guests must silence their screams if they want to survive the terrifying, post-apocalyptic world of A Quiet Place. Like the Abbott family, you must keep quiet as you travel from the farmhouse to the woods and then to the foundry.

Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America turned out to be one of Universal Studios Hollywood's most popular mazes. It was so popular, in fact, that they brought back a sequel to the 2024 maze lineup, titled Monstruos 2: The Nightmares of Latin America. Guests are able to further explore the terrifying universe of Latin American horror-folklore in this all-new, original house in which El Muerte will return to guide you through a graveyard of mythic monsters.
Meet three new monsters you can run from at Halloween Horror Nights 2024: the soul-stealing rider, El Charro; the supernatural, doglike spirit El Cadejo, who roams quiet roads at night in search of prey; and the child-eating horror movie staple, the boogeyman, this time named El Cucuy. Each of them comes with their own chilling backstories taken from real-life folklore and local tales.

To celebrate spooky season, Universal Studios Hollywood transforms on select evenings, giving guests quite the fright, with Halloween Horror Nights 2024 kicking off on September 5th. It features eight terrifying haunted houses: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Insidious: The Further, The Weekend: Nightmare Trilogy, Universal Monsters: Eternal Bloodlines, Monstruos 2: The Nightmares of Latin America, Dead Exposure: Death Valley, and A Quiet Place. The event also offers themed food and beverage options that are available exclusively to Halloween Horror Nights guests.
Because of the nature of this event, Universal Studios Hollywood recommends that those under 13 do not attend, stating it may be too intense for young children. In fact, while many of the park's rides remain open, the ones that are closed are specifically kids' rides, according to John Murdy, Creative Director for Universal Studios. "A lot of the rides are open, obviously Jurassic World - The Ride and The Mummy.

To celebrate both the success of the HBO TV series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us (read our review Here) and the tenth anniversary of the release of the game, Universal has announced that haunted houses based on The Last of Us will be at both their Hollywood and Orlando theme parks during this year’s Halloween Horror Nights festivities!
The Last of Us video game was developed by Naughty Dog and was set years after a fungal plague wiped out much of humanity, transforming most into vicious zombie-like monsters, the story follows Joel, who’s living in a militarized quarantine zone. ‘The Last Of Us’ Live Halloween Attractions Set For Universal Studios Resorts In Orlando & Hollywood

The Last of Us started as a video game, became a hit TV series and is about to become not one but two live attractions: Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights will open Last of Us haunted houses at Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood in September.
The Orlando attraction opens Friday, September 1, with the Hollywood version following on Thursday, September 7. Both events will run on select nights through Tuesday, October 31.
Watch a trailer for attractions above.
Based on the Naughty Dog and PlayStation video game, the attractions will, in the words of Universal, “propel guests into a world of carnage and mayhem as they follow in the footsteps of the game’s protagonists, Joel and Ellie, who endure a brutal journey in a world overtaken by a fungal virus that turns humans into various forms of a new threat known as the Infected.”
As guests encounter the Infected – Runners, Stalkers and Clickers – along with The Hunters, a band of hostile humans, they will navigate the Pittsburgh Quarantine Zone, including locations from the video game such as the creepy and desolate The Hotel Grand and a labyrinth of dark tunnels in an attempt to escape and survive.
“As a massive fan – and frequent attendee – of Halloween Horror Nights, we are honored to have The Last of Us included in this year’s lineup,” said Naughty Dog Co-President Neil Druckmann in a statement. “It has been an incredible thrill for us at Naughty Dog to collaborate with Universal, bringing the world of the game to life, focusing on even the tiniest details that our fans know so well.”
Lora Sauls, Assistant Director, Creative Development and Show Direction at Universal Orlando Resort, said the attractions will be “true to the spirit of this popular video game,” while John Murdy, Executive Producer of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood, added that the “world inside the game offers a multitude of suspenseful and horrifying opportunities to provide guests with a one-of-a-kind experience that can only be found at Halloween Horror Nights.”
Additional details, including new haunted houses, will be announced soon.

When Halloween Horror Nights opened at Universal Studios Hollywood in September, it was a true return to the full-throated event creative director John Murdy has been used to putting on for nearly two decades.
“In 2020, the season was canceled — as, I think, everybody’s life in 2020 was canceled. But when we came back in 2021, we were dealing with all the uncertainty, like everybody. We didn’t know which way things were gonna go, so it felt very different to me as the creative director and executive producer,” he says about last year’s in-person event.
Coming into 2022, the team behind one of Halloween’s greatest scare events not only wanted to return to its terrifyingly good time roots but “step it up across the board, in every possible way,” according to Murdy.

The Weeknd is joining the likes of Michael Myers and Dracula at Halloween Horror Nights, where “Blinding Lights”, “Heartless” and other chart-toppers drown out the screams from park guests in “The Weeknd: After Hours Nightmare”.
To get all the behind-the-scenes details, Et spoke with John Murdy, executive producer of Hhn at Universal Studios Hollywood, who worked closely with The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, to create a “surreal living nightmare filled with grotesque characters and themes” inspired by his music and short films.
“Abel had a very specific idea. He wanted to focus on what he would refer to as ‘the universe of After Hours,’” Murdy explains. “He wanted to take that album and turn it into a haunted house experience.”

Inside “The Weeknd: After Hours Nightmare” house at Halloween Horror Nights in Los Angeles is one of the “most outrageous” scenes the Universal Studios Hollywood event has done.
That’s according to John Murdy, creative director for Hhn in Hollywood, who teamed with Abel Tesfaye (known professionally as The Weeknd) to create a real-life nightmare based on the singer’s 2020 album for the 2022 event.
“We take it to the next level,” Murdy tells The Hollywood Reporter of the experience, which runs as part of the larger event through Oct. 31. “It’s probably one of the most surreal experiences we’ve created.”
In a statement given ahead of Hhn’s early September kickoff, The Weeknd shared that this project was one of his professional dreams. “I always wanted my own Halloween Horror Nights haunted house as Halloween has always been significant to my music,...

After missing out on the 2020 haunt season due to the pandemic, Universal Studios Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights came roaring back last week as it successfully launched its 2021 season with a handful of fantastic mazes and Scare Zones that are primed to scare the pants off SoCal residents in the coming weeks. Daily Dead was there for the opening night of Ush’s Halloween Horror Nights, and we have a ton of photos to share with you and this writer will dive into all the highlights from the event.
For Hhn 2021, John Murdy and his team changed things up a bit so this year, most of the mazes are located on the Upper Lot, which made things a lot easier while getting around to all the different haunts. We started off the night at the Curse of Pandora’s Box maze, which was pretty fun, especially since it wasn’t based on a specific property,...

Hard to believe that the Halloween season is nearly upon us, but after taking 2020 off due to the ongoing pandemic, Universal Studios Hollywood’s Horror Nights is set to kick off in less than two weeks when it opens on Thursday, September 9th. Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to tour two of the 2021 Hhn mazes along with a group of our fellow haunt enthusiasts, and we brought back some insights to get you fright fiends ready for what you can expect from both The Haunting of Hill House and The Bride of Frankenstein Lives mazes that will be part of Universal Hollywood’s Horror Nights this year.
For The Haunting of Hill House maze, it was up to John Murdy, Chris Williams, and their team to recreate the titular locale that was front and center in Mike Flanagan’s Netflix series. When you go through the maze, every room...

Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando said Halloween Horror Nights returning in September will feature new mazes based on the Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House.
The series follows members of the Crain family, haunted by long-dormant fears from their time living in the menacing Hill House as children and forced to face the ghosts of the abode’s grisly past. It was created, directed and executive produced by Mike Flanagan and exec produced by Trevor Macy via their Intrepid Pictures.
The two theme parks will bring Hill House to life in Halloween Horror Nights mazes where guests embark on the dark journey experienced by the Crain family.
Scenes from the series will be featured throughout the maze including the Red Room, the heart of Hill House, and the Hall of Statues along with apparitions from William Hill (The Tall Man) to The Ghost...

Here in Los Angeles, Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights is always a highlight of the haunt season, and for 2019, John Murdy and his tireless team have pulled out all the stops. For this year’s fright-filled festivities, Hhn is delivering up nine brand new mazes, one additional scare zone maze, plus the permanent Walking Dead attraction as well, making 2019 their biggest year to date. There was no Terror Tram for attendees, but considering the amount of walking you have to do throughout the course of the night already (I logged 6.5 miles myself), I was glad that Murdy decided to give fans two additional dedicated mazes in its stead.
As usual, I always recommend those heading to Halloween Horror Nights to head straight down to the Lower Lot first, as those are the mazes that tend to fill up the fastest, and that was definitely the case for this year as well.

Last week, Daily Dead joined a group of journalists and esteemed Creative Director John Murdy for a preview tour of both the Creepshow and Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man mazes, which are set to open on Friday, September 13th (the perfect day!) as part of Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights event, which runs through Sunday, November 3rd.

Before we began the tour, Murdy discussed the approach of the Creepshow maze, and how integral Greg Nicotero—who is spearheading Shudder’s new Creepshow series this fall—was to helping make sure everything came together.

Universal Studios has announced a new horror movie themed maze for Halloween Horror Nights! This one will be based on Jordan Peele’s hit thriller Us. I enjoyed the film and it’s sure to make for a fun Halloween maze. Here are the details that were revealed for the maze:
Featuring the unnerving labyrinth of underground tunnels that stretch from coast to coast below America, to the disorienting and the ominous uprising of “The Tethered”— doppelgängers of every living man, woman and child in the country—the “Us” maze will place guests at the heart of this living nightmare where they quickly realize they are their own worst enemy.

Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights just keeps getting bigger and better. They have just announced that a maze dedicated to Jordan Peele's Us will be a part of this year's festivities at both the Los Angeles park and the Orlando park. Peele's latest is the highest grossing horror movie of this year, so far. However, Andres Muschietti's It Chapter Two is on the way and it will more than likely end up taking the crown away from Us. With that being said, the Tethered are going to have a major presence at this year's Halloween Horror Nights.
The Halloween Horror Nights maze dedicated to Us is going to take park visitors to the Santa Cruz boardwalk where Adelaide had her first childhood encounter with her doppelgänger in 1986. From there, the maze transports to the present day and puts visitors right in the middle of the Tethered uprising.

Featuring highlights from season 2 of Stranger Things and the forthcoming third season that premieres July 4th on Netflix, new Stranger Things mazes will be featured at Halloween Horror Nights 2019 at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort (so prepare yourself for hungry demo-dogs and maybe even a trip to the Starcourt Mall!), and we've been provided with an announcement video and artwork to share with Daily Dead readers.
Press Release: Universal City, CA, Orlando, Fla., March 27, 2019 – Netflix’s supernatural thriller, “Stranger Things” returns to “Halloween Horror Nights” 2019 at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort, debuting all-new mazes inspired by seasons 2 and 3 of the critically-acclaimed series.
This year’s chilling mazes pick up where last year’s mazes left off, continuing the suspenseful storyline where a predatory entity terrorizes the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, and delving even further into the parallel universe, referred to as the Upside Down.

Each and every September, haunt season in Southern California officially kicks off with the opening night of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios in Hollywood. Spearheaded by Creative Director John Murdy, this year’s Hhn has an admirable mix of both new and classic properties, including Stranger Things, Halloween 4, Trick ’r Treat, Poltergeist, The First Purge, Universal Monsters, and The Horrors of Blumhouse, which features both Unfriended and Truth or Dare. As a whole, Hhn 2018 might be one of the best overall experiences I’ve had at the annual event.
One of the first attractions we made our way through for the evening was the Halloween 4 maze, as it seemed like the logical place to start, and it was an incredible experience. As a fan, there are so many great moments in the Halloween 4 maze that were plucked right out of Dwight H. Little’s film that I could have...

Living in Los Angeles, I never take for granted that haunt season kicks off the second week of September every year with opening night of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood, and it has consistently been one of my favorite experiences as a genre fan over the last decade. Ahead of Hhn’s opening night on September 14th, Daily Dead had the opportunity to tour the upcoming Stranger Things maze, which will be featured not only at Universal Studios Hollywood, but will also be part of the fright-filled festivities at both Universal Studios Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Singapore.
John Murdy, Halloween Horror Night’s Creative Director here in Hollywood, took our press group through the impressive setup for Stranger Things last week, and for the first time ever, Murdy and his team were able to utilize a sound stage for a maze, giving them an enormous amount of space to build in,...

It’s that time of year again, when the hugely popular Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood will have the most authentic scares on display, from some of the biggest horror properties in film and TV. I've always thought it would be awesome if one year Universal Studios transformed their entire park to represent the classic movie monsters that helped launch the studio. I guess the next best thing would be to see a creepy maze and attraction that pays tribute to these Universal monsters, which is exactly what they are doing. Except for the fact that it will put a contemporary twist on the classic horror icons. I don't know why they feel they need to do that, but they are.
The new maze will also feature an original score that was produced and composed by Slash, who, as you know, is one of the best electric guitar players of all time. Here are the details on the maze:
