Phillip Boutte Jr., assistant costume designer for Mattel and Netflix’s upcoming “Masters of the Universe,” has worked tirelessly for well over a decade to establish himself as a concept artist whom costume designers and studios are eager to work with.
With credits such as “Black Panther,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Captain Marvel,” to name just three, Boutte has become one of the few people of color in a field in which directors and star talent can step in and make a difference by championing inclusion.
Director-producer Ava DuVernay routinely strives to make sure her projects feature diversity both in front of and behind the camera. One example: “A Wrinkle in Time,” for which Boutte was the costume concept artist. “She said, ‘There are people out there who can do this job. The growing number of outlets for movies and television means that demand for qualified artisans is at an all-time high. But while job opportunities have multiplied, the path to success — and potential elite status — is still a difficult one that requires on-the-job training, experience and skill development to deliver top-notch results.
Some of the challenge may be that many entertainment careers lack a direct path or degree.
“I think any practical experience in school helps, but you don’t have any idea [about the work] until you really get thrown into it,” says David Smith, a two-time Emmy-nominated set decorator, who started working in the industry at age 19.
More platforms invariably mean more work and move some people up the career ladder more quickly than their skillset warrants.

Yesterday's Jean Grey concept art confirmed that a more comic-faithful costume was being considered for the character in X-Men: Apocalypse at one point, and now we have this alternate Storm design from Philip Boutte Jr., which showcases an outfit reminiscent of Ororo's classic Uncanny X-Men clobber. This piece doesn't appear to have been modeled on Alexandra Shipp, but if - like the Elle Fanning/Jean art - the subject was another actress that was in the running for the role (only Zendaya was ever rumored as far as we know), we're not sure who it could be. Any ideas? Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel's X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants,...

You may have thought that X-Men: Days Of Future Past was absolutely over-stuffed with mutant characters. But for comic readers, that's not at all true. In fact, there's always more room for an extra mutant or two. What you may not know, however, is that X-Men: Days Of Future Past actually tried to sneak one more in, if the latest leaked concept art is to be believed. Above is the character design for Jubilee that went unused in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, which was posted online on the blog run by costume designer Phillip Boutte Jr. His resume so far includes Man Of Steel, The Wolverine, Cabin In The Woods, Ender's Game and many many more recent blockbusters. Though it's not listed on his IMDb profile, the blog also seems to feature designs used for Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., so the guy knows his superheroes. ...

Various pieces of concept art from costume illustrator Phillip Boutte Jr. have gone online showcasing alternate costume looks that were considered for characters in Bryan Singer's "X-Men: Days of Future Past".
Whilst many of them are quite interesting, most notably Fassbender's Magneto in a purple crushed velvet single-piece pantsuit, one of them stands out because the character wasn't in the final film - Jubilee.
Actress Kea Wong cameoed as the character in both "X2: X-Men United" and "X-Men: The Last Stand" with another actress playing her in the first "X-Men". Two designs for her appearance in 'Days' are on display at Concept Art World
Meanwhile, producer Simon Kinberg tells Empire that they did consider fan favorite character Cable for the film - in fact he was being looked at for a pivotal role, the mutant whose mind would be sent back in time:

Cable and Jubilee were considered for X-Men: Days of Future Past.
The two long-standing members of the mutant team were in line to appear in 20th Century Fox's film at various stages.
Early on, when Matthew Vaughn was still attached to direct the movie, Cable and Bishop were considered for the main time-travelling role that eventual went to Hugh Jackman's Wolverine.
"Initially, we explored the notion of Bishop being sent back, Cable being sent back, a new character being sent back, who we could cast old and then sort of cast in the prominent part of his life as a new young actor," producer Simon Kinberg told Empire.
Two designs for Jubilee by costume illustrator Phillip Boutte Jr have also been posted on Concept Art World.

It is already well known that director Bryan Singer intended larger roles for Storm (Halle Berry) and Rogue (Anna Paquin) in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Their parts were largely left on the cutting room floor, but did you know that Bryan Singer had intended to bring another mutant back for his latest X-Men film? Based on costume illustrations that Phillip Boutte created for the film, there are two for Jubilee. The mutant that can create bright bursts of multi-colored energy plasmoids was portrayed by Katrina Florece in X-Men (2000). Though, it is Jamie Chung's likeness used in the artwork. Film Sketchr has posted a fantastic new article that features an interview with costume illustrator Phillip Boutte Jr. and artwork that he created for Marvel's television series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. In the interview, Phillip discusses what it's like working alongside costume designer Ann Foley on translating comic book costumes for the television format. Phillip Boutte Jr.: Ann's design process always starts with what is real and a lot of research. She studies the comic character's look, then turns to fashion and history to translate the character's look into reality. I really appreciate the amount of work she does to get a character just right. She also, very much so, cares about the source material which is a big plus on my nerd radar. She wants to know that the character will be recognizable to fans but she also wants to make sure they look...

Film Sketchr just posted a new Man Of Steel interview with costume illustrator, Phillip Boutte Jr.. It also includes artwork that Phillip created for the film, including: Lara Lor-Van's (Ayelet Zurer) "Mourning" and "Pregnancy" robes, costumes and accessories for the Kryptonian Elders, and an early concept for Faora's armor. An excerpt from the interview: Film Sketchr: It looks like a great team to work with. Was there any challenge you had to overcome and how did you overcome it? Phillip Boutte Jr.: The biggest challenge I faced was helping to figure out what was special about the Kryptonian Tribunal members. Specifically, their ornate headdresses and steel cage crinoline-like bust plates. Our designer had a very specific direction in mind that he wanted to go and it took me a while to get there. The initial point of inspiration, believe it or not, were the Skeksis from the movie "The Dark Crystal...

Illustrator Phillip Boutte talks about the design process for Zack Snyder's Superman suit in Man of Steel. Apparently the production wrestled with whether to include the red underwear before eventually deciding to go without them. So was that influenced by DC's New 52 suit? Not all, apparently the decision was simply based on the desire to make Superman more alien and the production felt that the underwear made him more earth-like. Famous concept artist Warren Manser was the man that actually came up with the suit design. The interview goes on to also reveal that the suit is of Kryptonian origin. There's a little bit of wordplay here, but I believe the interviewee may have confirmed that General Zod is mostly CGI in this film, that is to say, his costume is. So maybe he wears his infamous armor from the comic books? Related Content: Up-Close With Man Of...

Newly released concept artwork for X-Men Origins: Wolverine reveals the character that Dominic Monaghan was originally intended to play in the movie.
The 32-year-old English actor, who rose to fame in Lord of the Rings and in the TV show Lost, had originally been cast in Wolverine as a freakish, bird-like mutant called Barnell Bohusk, otherwise known as Beak.
In the comic books, the character was even more avian - with a feathered body and rudimentary wings. His mutation was later removed and he went on to wear a hi-tech flight suit and take the name Blackwing.
You can see the movie's proposed version of Beak in the image on the right.
The first version of the script by David Benioff featured Beak as a carnival sideshow attraction, who was killed by Sabretooth.
But later versions of the screenplay changed Monaghan's character to Chris Bradley, a normal-looking mutant with the codename Bolt,...
