The most striking thing about Parkinson’s Disease, as we learn in Jeremy Paxman’s Paxman: Putting up with Parkinson’s (ITV), is the way that it just creeps up and mugs people. In this rather touching and very candid account of his life since he was formally diagnosed with it 18 months ago, Paxman explains that he only knew he had the condition after he’d been admitted to hospital when he slipped over on some ice and suffered some cuts to his face.
“I was in a real mess in A&e, and the doctor said, ‘I think you’ve got Parkinson’s.’ And it turned out he’d been watching University Challenge and he’d noticed my face had acquired what’s known as the ‘Parkinson’s mask’. I wasn’t as effusive and ebullient as normal. I had no idea.”
And so the tests were done, and at 72 years of age,...

Cannes Keeping Confident
Can Cannes? France might be under the swell of a third wave of coronavirus, but that has not dampened the bullishness of Cannes Film Festival organizers. Whether it’s blind hope or the fest knows something the rest of the world doesn’t, Cannes remains determined to hold its July 6-15 physical event in which “the film industry will meet up again in large numbers.” That’s not before a...

Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, filmmaker Edgar Wright and BBC journalist Rory Cellan-Jones will find themselves in the unlikely position of competing for the same prize at the 2012 T3 Gadget Awards. Consumer technology magazine T3 has today opened the voting for its annual awards, referred to as the 'Oscars of the gadget world'. The T3 awards recognise and honour the gadgets, software and personalities that have "intrigued, inspired and wowed the world over the past 12 months". Based on a Twitter vote, the field for 'Gadget Personality of the Year' includes Dotcom, Wright and Cellan-Jones, along with Gadget Show presenters Pollyanna Woodward and Jason Bradbury, and online video entrepreneur Hermione Way. Should Dotcom prove victorious, then it is unlikely that he will be able to pick the award up in person, (more)...

The English-language Wikipedia was blacked out yesterday as a demonstration against Sopa, forcing us to waste our time in crazzzy foreign languages, but it’s back with a vengeance today, and of course, it now includes an article about its own 2012 English Wikipedia Blackout: Weeeeeirddddd! It even includes a picture of itself when it was blacked out yesterday inside the now-working article. It’s like when you put two mirrors across from one another and it just reflects into eternity, only not really but isn’t it cool when that happens? More movies should do it. The weirdest part of the article, though, is the part where Wikipedia – in true objective fashion – had to list off the criticisms about itself: From the “Post-Blackout” section - “Newspaper editorials had mixed views. The Boston Herald called the protest a “hissy fit” by “Internet powerhouses” saying, “within hours of the online protest, political supporters of the bill…...

The battle between tech’s arch-rivals Apple and Google heats up today as the T3 Gadget Awards 2011 today unveils its shortlist. Steve Jobs’ Cupertino-based behemoth gets 15 nominations – but is trumped by 18 nods for Google and its Android operating system. Samsung comes in third with eight spots on the shortlist, while Sony picks up six.
Apple’s iPad 2 is up for six gongs, including overall Gadget of the Year, and faces off against Amazon’s Kindle for Commuter Gadget of the Year. And can anything compete with it for Tablet of the Year, in a sector where Apple has more than 80% of the market? The iPhone 4 has four nominations, holding its own amid rumours of its successor being delayed. In the Phone of the Year category, it goes up against wildcard entry the Htc Sensation.
Nintendo’s 3Ds is also in the running for four awards, including a three-way Gaming Gadget...

Two curious and awkward press events this week put a spotlight on the act of unveiling.
Yesterday, after a short period of global intrigue, J.K. Rowling revealed what exactly Pottermore.com will be: an interactive website with new content from Rowling and a portal to sell, exclusively, the e-book editions. Tech industry watchers may be nonplussed, but it's a smart, high-tech maneuver for a brand already worth billions.
The PR strategy, however, doesn't quite live up to the innovation. Rowling's team seemed to be planning a very regimented press affair. And they decided to show the site to journalists beforehand--and expected it wouldn't leak out. Which, naturally, it did.
Pause here for a minute. Switch over to another sneak-peek leak.
Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop showed a room packed full of journalists the Nokia's first Windows Phone 7 device this week, and asked the high-tech-savvy crowd to turn off their cameras and not leak the device's details.

While you were sleeping, innovation was not crying in court after being informed it was to spend time in chokey. Instead it was poring over data receieved courtesy of an Foia request, picking the right smiley face, and then facing deportation. Oh, innovation, what will we do without you?
