Quinceañeras are about to take on a whole new meaning. Fifteen teenagers, ages 15 and 16, are coming together to protest the Senate Bill 4 (SB4), which is being considered a “ban on Sanctuary cities.” And this isn’t your regular protest as the young women participating will be dressed in bright, puffy quinceañera dresses.
The event, hosted by the Latino non-profit Jolt, will take place on July 19 at the Capitol Steps in Austin, Texas. The protestors will be taking turns to recite their stance against SB4 and they will also perform a choreographed dance together, which is a tradition at the coming-of-age celebration.

50 years ago a gunshot rang out across the University of Texas campus. Claire Wilson, a pregnant student, was hit in the belly, instantly killing her unborn child. Her fiance, Thomas Eckman turned to her and asked “What’s wrong?” A second shot ensured he would never hear the answer.
For the next hour and a half, death came to the campus. A sniper had taken up position in the central tower, firing indiscriminately at anyone he could get a bead on. By the time he was killed by police he had murdered 11 people and wounded 32.
Reaction at the time was frightened bewilderment. Why would a person take out their frustrations on random strangers in such violent fashion? Little did they know that these shootings were merely the opening act of a continuing trend, one, encompassing names that have become synonymous with tragedy: Columbine, Aurora, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook and Pulse.

Filmmaker and green transport guru Chris Paine.s second feature-length documentary, Revenge Of The Electric Car is a follow-up to his first, Who Killed The Electric Car? from five years ago. The first was a look at the Ev-1, a battery-powered car that General Motors designed, built, and test-marketed. After conspiring with the big oil companies, Gm reclaimed the entire fleet and had the cars destroyed. Paine presented this as one of America.s most outrageous conspiracy theories, right up there with the fake moon landing and the Grassy Knoll, a case of environmental innovation squelched by greedy oil profits. Paine peppered the film with testimonials from celebrity owners such as Ed Begley Jr, Mel Gibson, and Tom Hanks because either acting in movies makes them experts in technology or because they can afford the pensive cars. Paine actually staged a funeral for the Ev-1 but, since his was an agenda-driven doc,...

The film goes behind the closed doors of Nissan, Gm, the Silicon Valley start-up Tesla Motors and independent car converter Greg “Gadget” Abbott to chronicle the resurgence of electric cars. The movie shows how almost every major car maker is jumping at the chance to produce new electronic models, a mere five years after the companies were destroying them. Paine discusses with us, among other things, why he decided to chronicle the revival of the electric car, and how the public’s...

Five years after Chris Paine's documentary Who Killed the Electric Car? hit screens, the director is back with another behind-the-scenes look at the car industry: Revenge of the Electric Car. Back in July Google said it was buying airline travel software giant Ita. Now the Justice Department is probing the deal, concerned Google's might will put the squeeze on the industry.
The Ita deal had been rumored for a while before Google's official announcement in July. The $700 million transaction made sense--the two companies seem made for each other, it would give Google an inside line on some very neat real-time airline data, and the firm could even use its Net-searching expertise to make the task of finding cheap flights much easier for the average Joe Consumer.
But now the Justice Department is in the early stages of a probe into the deal, according to reports. The concern is whether Google's acquisition of Ita would strangle a data feed that other existing players in the online flight sales market rely upon. Ita, for example, sold the data that makes Orbitz and CheapTickets work.
