ESPN, Stephen A. Smith Closing in On New Deal
Image
ESPN and Stephen A. Smith are close to hammering out a new contract that will give the popular Disney sports personality potential access to other parts of the Magic Kingdom.

The two sides, who have been in negotiations for several months, are said to be hopeful they can reach a deal over the next several weeks, according to a person familiar with the situation. ESPN and Disney have been in talks with Smith to devise a new pact that could involve creating a sort of “first-look” agreement for Smith-backed concepts across Disney’s general-entertainment properties, according to this person and a second familiar with the talks.

A representative for ESPN declined to comment. WME, the agency that represents Smith, was not able to offer immediate comment.

Should the deal come to fruition, it would represent the latest in ESPN’s efforts to sign top talent to its roster. In recent years,...

ESPN’s ‘Inside the NBA’ Deal Is Latest to Snatch Top Sports Ideas From Rivals
Image
If he can’t beat them, ESPN chief Jimmy Pitaro is still willing to do business with them.

A creative deal that will bring what is perhaps America’s favorite sports studio show to Disney after years of it airing on Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNT spotlights a growing willingness at ESPN to take a “curation” approach to game-day concepts and content. Some of the biggest deals at ESPN in recent years aren’t ones that start new formats or series, but rather the type that make ESPN a perch for sports personalities who have already proven popular somewhere else.

The new pact, unveiled formally Monday after leaking over the weekend, makes “Inside the NBA” an ESPN property as far as fans are concerned. To be sure, Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNT Sports will continue to produce the show from Atlanta over the term of the pact, which commences with the 2025-26 NBA season.

ESPN’s New Game: Getting Sports Fans Ready for Parlays, Odds, Bets
Image
One of the newer arrivals in the world of online sports betting is making a wager of its own.

Disney’s ESPN is no stranger to the world of gambling. The sports-media giant has aired a show devoted to sports odds and in the past struck partnerships with both Caesars Entertainment and DraftKings that helped it offer its subscribers links to betting. Now it’s ready to put its own name behind the parlays.

“What our competitors can’t touch is what we are going to offer, which is integrating with ESPN content,” says Aaron Laberge, the chief technology officer of Penn Entertainment, and the former Cto for ESPN and Disney Entertainment.

ESPN and Penn struck a landmark deal in August of last year that will have the latter pay the Disney sports-media giant $1.5 billion in cash over 10 years, and grant it $500 million of warrants to purchase approximately 31.8 million common shares of Penn.

Pat McAfee Tries to Broker (Limited) Peace With ESPN Critics
Image
Pat McAfee, one of ESPN’s toughest talkers, is, as things turn out, surprisingly tender-hearted.

The one-time Indianapolis Colts team member, who has also taken to the ring to fight in the WWE, surprised many a grizzled sports-media journalist Wednesday in Bristol, Conn., by alternatively lashing out at his critics (some of them in the room) and asking the audience to cut his freewheeling program, “The Pat McAfee Show” a little slack.

“I understand that you may have a lot of reasons to potentially hate me,” McAfee said while holding forth Wednesday at the headquarters of the Disney-backed sports-media giant. “I think they’re misguided. I would appreciate if you would give me and my guys a chance. I think we’re helping out sports media as a whole in the future. I think we’re going to get some things wrong and we apologize for that.” Sitting alongside ESPN...

Mike Greenberg Named New Host of ESPN’s ‘Sunday NFL Countdown’

He takes over the host role from Sam Ponder, who was reportedly fired last week, alongside football analyst Robert Griffin III. The decision to part ways with the two was described as being part of a cost-cutting move.

ESPN’s senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter will return, as will Jeff Darlington, Dan Graziano, Kimberley A. Martin, Sal Paolantonio, Lindsey Thiry and sports betting analyst Erin Dolan.

Chris Mortensen Retires From ESPN To “Focus On My Health, Family And Faith”
Image
One NFL insider voice that ESPN viewers will not be listening to as the new season kicks off is Chris Mortensen as the football analyst has announced his retirement from the network.

Mortensen had quietly quit the sports network earlier this year and ahead of the start of the NFL season has made it public to all of his fans.

“Excited about another season but it’s time to reveal after my 33rd NFL draft in April, I made a decision to step away from ESPN and focus on my health, family and faith,” he shared on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

Luckily for fans who have been following his career for 33 years, he’s still going to be giving his hot takes on the NFL.

“The gratitude and humility is overwhelming. It’s not a classic retirement. I’ll still be here talking ball. It’s just time.

ESPN Plots Morning-Show Cross-Over For ‘Get Up,’ ‘First Take’
Image
On Monday, ESPN hosts Mike Greenberg and Stephen A. Smith might be called for going offsides.

Smith, Greenberg, Michael Irvin, Molly Qerim, Rex Ryan, Dan Orlovsky and more will make appearances across the two shows’ four hours and analyze weekend NFL play as well as discuss a game between the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers schedule for ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.”

“The dynamic will be memorable, if not unpredictable,” says David Roberts, ESPN’s head of NBA and studio production, who oversees the morning programs, in an interview.

ESPN at present doesn’t appear to have plans to make the cross-over event a regular thing,...

ESPN Finds New Way to Reflect on The Year in Sports
Image
This year in sports can’t be summed up with Top 10 lists and reels of game clips. So ESPN is going to try some different tactics.

ESPN plans a three-hour primetime event to bid farewell to year in sports that often involved events that took place well off the field. The show, “SportsCenter Presents: 2020 – Heroes, History and Hope,”will air as three one-hour programs and will kick off on Thursday, December 24 at 8 p.m. Jeremy Schaap and Lisa Salters. It will also be available on the ESPN mobile app

“We’ve done all different kinds of year-end specials. Some of them have been anthologies of our best stories commentary. Five or six different panel shows do ten best things, then worst things,” says Schaap, in an interview. “For obvious reasons, that wouldn’t have seemed an appropriate way to look back at a year with so much devastation and heartache...

ESPN And Dan Le Batard Part, TV And Radio Host Will Leave Network In January
Image
The purge at ESPN continues, as longtime show host Dan Le Batard will leave the network in January.

The announcement of his departure said Le Batard “will be leaving ESPN early next year to pursue a new opportunity.” His ESPN radio show, The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz, will end Jan. 4. His hosting of the TV show Highly Questionable will finish the same day, but the show will remain on ESPN with what’s described as a “contributing team.”

“It was mutually agreed that it was best for both sides to move on to new opportunities and we worked together closely to make that possible,” said Norby Williamson, ESPN executive vice president and executive editor. “We thank Dan for his many years and contributions to ESPN and wish him all the best going forward.”

Le Batard has clashed in recent months with ESPN executives, and has complained that the...

ESPN Will Part Ways With Opinionated Host Dan Le Batard
Image
Dan Le Batard, the popular and opinionated ESPN talk-show host, is walking away from the sports-media giant after working there in various capacities for nearly a decade.

Le Batard, who in mid-2019 openly challenged what had been ESPN’s policy not to address straight political matters, is leaving to pursue a new opportunity that neither party described. The last broadcast of his “The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz” on ESPN Radio will take place January 4, and will subsequently be replaced by Mike Greenberg’s new radio program, “Greeny.” Le Batard will host his last episode of the ESPN TV program “Highly Questionable” on the same day. ESPN said that program will continue to run as part of its regular lineup.

Le Batard is the latest in a string of prominent content executives and personnel to announce their departure from ESPN in recent days and comes as the Disney unit...

Dan Le Batard to Exit ESPN Next Month
Chris Cote
Dan Le Batard is leaving ESPN next month. His TV show, “Highly Questionable,” will continue on without him — or his dad.

“It was mutually agreed that it was best for both sides to move on to new opportunities and we worked together closely to make that possible,” said Norby Williamson, ESPN executive vice president and executive editor. “We thank Dan for his many years and contributions to ESPN and wish him all the best going forward.”

The final episode of “The Dan Le Batard Show With Stugotz” will broadcast on Monday, Jan. 4, with Le Batard’s final episode of “Highly Questionable” to air the same day.

The announcement of Le Batard’s exit comes a month after a clash with ESPN executives over a producer on “The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz,” Chris Cote, fell victim to the network’s latest round of layoffs. Le Batard called the move...

Longtime ‘SportsCenter’ Host Trey Wingo Leaves ESPN
SportsCenter (1979)
One of ESPN’s longtime faces is leaving the network. Trey Wingo, who hosted “SportsCenter” and the network’s NFL Draft coverage over a two-decade tenure, is exiting the network after his contract was not renewed.

The decision not to re-up Wingo’s contract came as part of ESPN’s massive job cuts, the New York Post reported earlier this month (the NY Post also reported back in September that Wingo was being let go). The host’s departure was not confirmed until today, which is also his last day at the network.

“I can barely remember a day which didn’t involve working side by side with this guy. @wingoz has been an incredible teammate & friend for more than 2 decades. On today, his last day at ESPN, I along with many others, salute him and wish him all the best in his next chapter,” said Seth Markman, ESPN’s...

After Mile Golic’s Departure, ESPN Radio Bets Big on Keyshawn, JWill and Zubin
Image
Keyshawn Johnson, Jay Williams and Zubin Mehenti have a big radio debut on Monday, when they take over ESPN’s national morning slot. But their new jobs started in earnest on Wednesday.

The trio met in their studio at ESPN’s New York production facility for the first time, ready to test out their rapport. “I think if you took out the bumps in the road and you put that in the can, that could have been a show,” says Johnson.

It probably won’t be that easy.

Johnson, Williams and Mehenti are taking over a slot inhabited by only a few voices in the past two decades, with Mike Golic talking to A.M. sports fans between 1998 and 2020, joined by Mike Greenberg for 17 years. ESPN raised eyebrows in July when executives announced they were taking Golic off the program. Greenberg had departed to host ESPN’s morning-tv program “Get Up” in 2018. On Monday,...

Mike Greenberg Gears Up for ESPN Radio Return With New Show, ‘Greeny’
Image
Mike Greenberg must move fast as the host of ESPN’s “Get Up” each weekday morning. He’s hoping a new radio gig in the afternoons will give him the chance he needs to slow things down.

“On the TV show, we are just flying through stuff. The average interview on my show in the morning is – a long interview for us is six or seven minutes. On the radio, I could see us doing 15, 16, 17 minutes when the circumstances call for it,” says Greenberg, in an interview that is just a little longer than the time he wants for radio sessions. “It’s not every day that you have the right opportunities and the right subject matter to do that.”

Greenberg is making a return to familiar territory but hoping to blaze a different path when he gets there. His new program, “Greeny” – ESPN originally called it “The Mike Greenberg Show,...

Mike Golic Will Call College Football for ESPN This Season – ‘If There Are College Football Games’
Keyshawn Johnson in Dancing with the Stars (2005)
Mike Golic will soon be without an ESPN Radio show, but he’s not out of 2020 ESPN gigs yet — assuming Covid-19 cooperates.

On Monday’s “Golic & Wingo” show, Golic, who is under contract with ESPN for the remainder of the year, said that he approached management and asked to return to calling college football games for the company’s cable channel. That’s where the former Notre Dame standout and NFL lineman got his post-football start in media.

ESPN gave the green light to that idea — should collegiate sports actually return amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

ESPN Radio Reshuffle: ‘Golic & Wingo’ Out, Mike Greenberg Makes Return
Image
ESPN said it would cancel its flagship morning radio program, “Golic & WIngo,” while bringing Mike Greenberg, half of the team that helped the Disney sports-media giant carve a bigger business in the audio world, back to the medium as part of a reworking of its national lineup.

Greenberg, who spent 17 years with co-host Mike Golic on the morning radio program “Mike & Mike,” will keep his duties on the ESPN mid-morning TV program, “Get Up,” which he has helped anchor since the Spring of 2018. But he will also lead a new two-hour radio show that airs between noon and 2 p.m. weekdays. His former partner, Mike Golic will leave mornings along with Trey Wingo. The pair has hosted their program since November of 2017.

“Our new lineup will provide sports fans informative and engaging content throughout the week from hosts who all have radio experience,” said Norby Williamson, ESPN’s executive vice president and executive editor,...

HBO’s “Real Sports” Will Tackle Big-League Response to Racism, Coronavirus
Image
Bryant Gumbel is exhausted.

He is taking time out from two days of video chats with a range of athletes, coaches, managers and observers that will help fill a decidedly non-traditional hour of “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,” the newsmagazine he has anchored on HBO since 1995. On June 23, the program will do away with its typical format and devote the entire program to examining how sports has been affected by both the coronavirus pandemic and the racial injustice that has spurred protests nationwide.

“I categorize it as trying to eat Jell-o with a knife and fork,” he says of his current pursuit, which is slated to include interviews with people ranging from Billie Jean King, Bubba Wallace and Bob Costas to Hank Aaron, Steve Kerr and Killer Mike. “What we are trying to make sense of is the fact that sports, like everything else on the planet, is in a unique moment.

ESPN Asks Top Sports Commentators to Take 15% Pay Cut
Mike Greenberg
ESPN is asking its top 100 commentators to take a pay cut while the network weathers the coronavirus pandemic, which is hit the sports channel particularly hard with the cancellation of virtually all live sporting events.

“We are asking about 100 of our commentators to join with our executives and take a temporary salary reduction. These are challenging times and we are all in this together,” the network said in a statement.

It is unclear which commentators were asked but ESPN’s highest-profile personalities include Stephen A. Smith, Mike Greenberg, Alex Rodriguez and Kirk Herbstreit. The salary reductions will be around 15% and are expected to last for three months, an individual with knowledge of the decision told TheWrap.

ESPN Seeks Pay Cuts From Top On-Air Personnel
Mike Greenberg
ESPN, struggling to keep fresh programming on its schedule with live sports sidelined by the coronavirus pandemic, is asking some of its best-known personalities to take pay cuts.

“We are asking about 100 of our commentators to join with our executives and take a temporary salary reduction. These are challenging times and we are all in this together,” the Disney-owned sports-media giant said in a statement. Sports Business Journal previously disclosed the cuts.

The salary reductions are likely to affect the network’s highest-paid commentators, who include personalities like Stephen A. Smith and Mike Greenberg. ESPN is seeking cuts of 15%, and would encompass three months of pay cycles, according to a person familiar with the matter. Executives hope the pay cuts will tamp down a need for furloughs, and keep paychecks intact for lower-paid ESPN employees who don’t earn the types of salaries that the big-name personalities do.
