The Wheel of Time is Prime Video’s attempt at making a sweeping epic fantasy adventure series and for the most part, they are pretty successful in making The Wheel of Time a brilliant series that is an honest interpretation of the source material. The fantasy series has everything working for it from a brilliant cast to great creators and a storyline containing a story about a world-ending threat and a fight between good and evil. The Wheel of Time recently concluded its second season, so while you wait for any updates to come out on Season 3. Here are some similar shows you could watch until then.

Days after "House of the Dragon" flew into homes with its Gwen Stefani-colored wigs and a lecherous Targaryen uncle, HBO renewed the "Game of Thrones" spinoff series for Season 2. Plenty has been written about how its predecessor over-relied on misogynistic violence. Ironically, "Game of Thrones" creator George R.R. Martin has stated that he uses brutal means — like rape and murder — in his stories to expose oppressive practices that hurt women. England's War of the Roses, a time which saw lady royals like Marguerite of Anjou fight for power, inspired Martin's epic series. In a post-Roe vs. Wade America, it's vital to acknowledge the historic violence women continue to face.

Bem vindo, babies! Welcome to A Discovery of Witches, a world of magic, mortal danger, extremely covetable houses, and excellent coats (every character has at least one excellent coat. Presumably the babies will be fitted for theirs shortly). Though their world is fraught with danger, little Philip and Rebecca are lucky mites. Yes, they’ve been born into the middle of a war, but they’ve landed on the winning side, with a mum who’s an all-powerful witch prophesied to change the world, and a dad who drives a Bentley – it’s all the start in life any child needs.
A good portion of episode four was devoted to the babies’ arrival, which had a characteristic Matthew-and-Diana honeyed glow about it. Trust those two to have a silky, romantic labour. No hospital gowns, strip lighting and plastic bedsheets for them – just lightly perspiring gorgeousness.

This A Discovery of Witches article contains major spoilers.
Not every television series learns exactly how many episodes it has to tell its story, and the Shudder/Sundance Now fantasy drama A Discovery of Witches takes full advantage of that knowledge leading viewers down a season two path that intentionally raises more questions than answers. It’s been a wild ride as Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont continue their search for The Book of Life amidst the creature underworld of 16th century Elizabethan London, and not surprisingly there’s a lot to unpack about the season finale.
Throughout the season the actions of the principal characters center around the acquisition of the book, and though Diana and Matthew acquire the tome with relatively little effort, holding onto it proves a bit more problematic. Nevertheless, watching young Jack utilize his skillset to recover the book from Lord Burghley’s henchmen is delightfully subtle.

Warning: contains spoilers for A Discovery of Witches season 2 episode 8.
Near the end of A Discovery of Witches season two, episode eight, Peter Knox walks into the hospital room where new parents Sophie and Nathaniel are recovering from the birth of their daughter Margaret. As a powerful witch who represents his people on political assembly the Congregation, he’s there to verify that the baby is – as he’s been told – a witch born to daemons, and then to kidnap the child so that she can be raised by her own species.
Knox holds up a small carved ball, which instantly stops Nathaniel in his tracks and drags him over the floor where he collapses at Knox’s feet. The witch then flourishes the ball at Sophie, and as he utters the command ‘sleep’, it emits a wave of energy that also knocks her unconscious.
We’ve seen Knox work magic of this kind before.

Tell me, how was dinner? Before diving back to the gloomy past, A Discovery of Witches took a gulp of fresh air in the modern day and dropped in on Sept-Tours. With Sarah and Em there under Ysabeau’s protection, the table was being laid for what promised to be a primo scene between the mortal-enemies-turned-housemates. And then… pouf, nothing. It was straight back to the 16th century for another round of bad Matthew. Fingers crossed that the characters we invested in from season one are better served in future episodes.
Satu’s quest to learn about her powers and destiny, for instance, is worth more to fans of season one than political Elizabethan intrigue. Right now though, Satu’s story is only being used as a parallel to Diana’s own search – the dark witch and the light, both seeking answers about their destiny.

A Discovery of Witches returns for its sophomore season on Sky One and AMC/Sundance and explores a time-travel induced paradigm shift forcing star crossed lovers Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont to gingerly navigate 16th century London. The season two premiere introduces a fascinating new set of historical figures as the search for the Book of Life intensifies, and the romantic entanglement between the witch and the vampire remains at the heart of the tale.
As the crisis surrounding the decline of the three creatures rages on in the present, the search for the volume that details the origin of the species appears to hold answers that all three believe can stem the tide. Now in 1590 England, one of the more fascinating arcs involves the hunt for a skilled witch to instruct Diana in the control of her ever increasing powers.

As honeymoon destinations go, Elizabethan London isn’t quite the Maldives but for historian Dr Diana Bishop, it may as well be. To a history nut like her, the prospect of experiencing life in the 16th century must have been quite something. To meet Sir Walter Raleigh, see St Paul’s before Christopher Wren got his hands on it, wear gowns so voluminous that a small family and several pets could be comfortably housed beneath her skirts… she’d be living the dream.

It begins with absence and desire. It begins with blood and fear. It begins with a discovery of witches.
At the start of A Discovery of Witches season one, the magical world was in crisis. Creatures – witches, vampires and demons – were in decline on Earth. The power of witches was waning, with some forms of ancient magic extinct for centuries. Vampires were finding themselves unable to sire other vampires.
Divisions between the three species were stark, with deep prejudice and resentment between historical enemies the vampires and the witches, while demons were marginalised and restricted by rules enforced by powerful ruling group The Congregation. Division and mistrust ruled.
Then came Professor Diana Bishop. Born to witches but orphaned as a child, Diana spent her life avoiding magic. What magical power she displayed she wasn’t able to control. When her academic...

Sometimes inspiration comes from the most unexpected places.
Two years ago, AMC Networks executives were impressed with the performance of the first season of a low-profile genre series co-produced in the U.K. with Comcast’s Sky that premiered on AMC’s arthouse-y streaming service Sundance Now in January 2019. “A Discovery of Witches” has become the little engine that could for the streaming service that has been around in one form or another since 2014.
Last year, when the coronavirus outbreak up-ended the entertainment business landscape, the performance of Season 1 of “Discovery” greatly influenced the thinking of AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan and chief operation officer Ed Carroll on how to respond to sudden change in business conditions.
“It’s amazing what a difference a year makes,” Carroll told Variety. “After the year that we’ve had, we’ve decided to heavy-up on our investment in SVOD.”

This A Discovery of Witches article contains spoilers for the ending of Season 1.
A Discovery of Witches, like Outlander, is one of the few big-budget genre TV shows that is also unabashedly romance. Based on the All Souls trilogy by Deborah Harkness, the screen adaptation follows Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer), a historian and witch who, after discovering a bewitched manuscript in Oxford’s Bodelian Library, is pulled further into a world of magic and danger she has been trying to avoid since she was young. In the process, she meets and falls in love with geneticist and vampire Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode), and the two become caught in the middle of the long-running tensions between witches and vampires.

Our genre television podcast hosts choose their favorite examples of television vampires who won our hearts without the use of glamour.
Although vampires have been using powers of seduction to wile their way into their victims’ hearts for more than a century in literature, it’s only been a few decades since the creatures of the night became the beautiful, brooding immortals in television and film that fought against their bloodthirsty urges to seek human companionship. Despite the occasional moral misstep, many of these monsters became the misunderstood heroes of our favorite shows, and this week’s Sci Fi Fidelity podcast seeks to identify the most likable of the lot.

Matthew and Diana visit Sept-Tours on A Discovery of Witches Season 1 Episode 4 where their connections deepens while others try to tear them apart.
For the time being, those forces are winning, but even Ysabeau and Marthe have a difficult time disliking Diana, a witch of all things, when they see the pain she feels at potentially losing Matthew.
The Congregation also gets more involved in all things Diana and Matthew, and Diana learns about the Covenant.
At it's core, A Discovery of Witches is an allegory about humanity and how we cannot all get along despite all of the similarities we share.
It's a Romeo and Juliette story in which the real Juliette is not the love interest. There are so many different ways to see the story, but all views share the commonality that you can't judge a person by their trappings.

Word about Diana Bishop is getting around the vampire realm.
In this clip from A Discovery of Witches Season 1 Episode 3, Satu is minding her own business while spying into Diana's life when in comes a vampire with an edge.
The synopsis for Episode 3 goes like this:
Domenico takes Satu's information to menacing vampire Gerbert, who gains the advantage he has been waiting for.
Related: A Discovery of Witches Review - Ashml 782
Diana refuses to help Knox realize his longing to destroy the vampires and answers his threats with a force of untamed elemental power.
If you take note of what Satu is doing in the clip, you'll suddenly be swept away into the world of U.S. politics because I bet every Democrat in the country wants what she holds in her pocket.
The power to unredact pages?
Oh yes, that's one that people would kill for in this world today.

A Discovery of Witches is brewing a slow-simmer success. The supernatural drama made its commercial television debut last Sunday night on AMC and BBC America (9:00 Pm Et/Pt) with a cast led by Teresa Palmer (Hacksaw Ridge), Matthew Goode (Downton Abbey), Alex Kingston (Doctor Who), Valarie Pettiford (Being Mary Jane), and Owen Teale (Game of Thrones). After his Emmy nomination last year for The Crown, Goode might rank as the most illustrious name from the show’s ensemble but make no mistake: A Discovery Of Witches is a television adaptation that echoes with the female voice in every phase.

Diana Bishop really can't catch a break, can she? First the heroine at the heart of A Discovery of Witches, played to perfection by Australian actress Teresa Palmer, finds herself struggling to accept her witchy abilities and declining awkward invites to coven gatherings. Then she has to somehow pretend she's not romantically interested in Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode), which is a true feat of strength. And Then she magically accesses Ashmole 782 and all hell breaks loose in the supernatural world. Kind of a crazy first week at Oxford for Diana, huh?
In the second episode of season one, which airs on Sunday, April 14, Diana encounters yet another dangerous hurdle in her journey down the magic rabbit hole: a deadly, extremely powerful Scandinavian witch named Satu Järvinen (Malin Buska). After being tipped off to Diana's exciting discovery by Peter Knox (Owen Teale), Satu pays Diana a surprise visit during her run...

It's entirely possible you've already seen this romantic supernatural series tinged with mystery and suspense.
A Discovery of Witches Season 1 Episode 1 first aired internationally. For the United States, I saw the premiere at Nycc this past October before it first appeared on Sundance Now and Shudder.
Finally, those of you who aren't nimble enough to find all of the good stuff on streaming services outside Netflix and Hulu can feast your eyes on the fiery relationship between a witch and vampire.
If you've read the books in the All Souls Trilogy, including A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and The Book of Life, then you're probably already familiar with this story, and you most likely have already watched it once or twice.
Author Deborah Harkness managed to write a romantic storyline between a witch and a vampire that didn't feel like all of the other similar material out there.

This month, it’s all about the TV power couples: FX unveils their next big prestige project, i.e. a bruising Broadway-duo relationship drama with a liberal doze of jazz hands; AMC and BBC America combine forces to give folks a match-up between a witch and a vampire, as well as bringing back a critically adored cat-and-mouse game for a bloody Round Two; and no less than Javert and Valjean will obsessively pursue one another yet again in a new rendering of Les Misérables. That still leaves your standard morally-deficient-blind-girl comedy,...

One of those most enjoyable aspects so far of A Discovery Of Witches is that although it’s a series about magic, there’s a lot of science in it. The idea that creatures such as vampires and demons should choose, in the modern age, to be doctors, geneticists, and academics, is a really enjoyable one. Why lurk around in graveyards when there’s finally a chance of using your superior intellect and advanced age to get some answers?

Will A Discovery of Witches do more than just hit the familiar marks of supernatural fiction? Or will that be enough?
This A Discovery of Witches review contains spoilers.
A Discovery of Witches Episode 1
This review comes from Den of Geek UK.
There’s a certain book that I’ve been drawn back to over and over again since it was published in 2016. It’s called Meetings With Remarkable Manuscripts, by Christopher De Hamel, and it’s about some of the oldest and most beautiful books in the world. These are the kind of books that have a fascinating history, and De Hamel tells us a lot about the past by travelling to see, maybe even touch, them. But what I like most is that he also tells us what it’s like to be close to these books, now, after they have survived for so long.

AMC Network’s SVOD service Sundance Now and streaming service Shudder have jointly acquired the Sky production “A Discovery of Witches,” both companies announced at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday.
The eight-episode drama is based on Deborah Harkness’ novel of the same name and produced by Bad Wolf, the team behind “The Night Of,” “Doctor Who,” “Torchwood,” “Da Vinci’s Demons” and the upcoming adaptation of Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials.”
Matthew Goode, Teresa Palmer, Alex Kingston, Valarie Pettiford and Owen Teale star in the Oxford love story in which witches, vampires and daemons live and work hidden among humans. Palmer plays Diana Bishop, a witch historian denying her heritage. Goode plays Matthew Clairmont, a vampire and geneticist hiding a dark family secret.
