- James Blades was born on September 9, 1901 in Peterborough, Northamptonshire, England, UK. He was a composer, known for The Pen of My Aunt (1960), The Little Sweep (1962) and Shapes and Forms (1950). He died on May 19, 1999 in Cheam, Surrey, England, UK.
- A percussionist, he was responsible for making the famous gong sound heard at the start of all J. Arthur Rank movies. Various different strongmen were seen in the visuals but the sound was recorded separately.
- Inducted into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame in 1975.
