‘In space no one can hear you scream’ is arguably the most memorable tagline in film history. Taken from Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror Alien (1979), it describes the isolation and futility that man is faced with when staring in to the abyss that lies beyond our planet. Gravity reinforces this maxim in its opening titles, which state ‘space is impossible’. However, director Alfonso Cuarón’s film will leave you with so little air in your lungs that you may have trouble breathing let alone screaming. Such is its immersive nature.
Much has been written about the technological innovation behind this tale of a rookie astronaut struggling to survive after being set adrift in space. Yet for all its effects wizardry – which aids in putting viewers within the film, especially through the expert use of point-of-view (Pov) shots – Gravity offers a relatively simple take on the human will to endure in the face of tragedy.
