“In the Streets” is the first edition of the Notebook Insert, a seasonal supplement on moving-image culture.Illustration by Lale Westvind. On the night of November 17, 2011, thousands marched across the Brooklyn Bridge holding electric tea candles, a kind of vigil for dashed hopes. Two nights earlier, their protest encampment had been evicted from Zuccotti Park, a sparsely planted public-private open space two blocks from the New York Stock Exchange, from which they had fomented a popular movement demanding broad changes to the status quo of global capitalism. The march had been planned in advance to mark two months since the inception of the occupation, but in the aftermath of the police raid, it took on a somber, even funereal aspect. As marchers proceeded across the bridge overpass, a huge circle of light appeared on the long windowless wall of a nearby skyscraper, beneath the menacing checkmark logo of a telecommunications company.

Strictly Come Dancing's Daniel O'Donnell has defended dancing partner Kristina Rihanoff from negativity in the media after leaving the show this evening (October 18).
Rihanoff received negative press after confirming recently that she and ex-Strictly partner Ben Cohen are in a relationship.
Speaking to Digital Spy and others, O'Donnell considered whether Rihanoff's negative coverage affected his own popularity, saying: "Oh, not at all. No. And I think if people knew Kristina and knew the type of person she is – and just the fact of the wonderful work she does for charity."
He added: "I think if that was written about it would give a very balanced view of the good person she is.
"I hope [my wife] Majella and myself, yes, will be able to keep in touch with her and Ben [Cohen] yes."
O'Donnell also said he wasn't at all fazed by the speculation that Kristina was "gutted" to be paired with him,...

Strictly's Daniel O'Donnell has suggested Kristina Rihanoff probably deserved to be paired with "a young sports star" instead of him.
The 53-year-old Irish crooner is partnered up with professional Russian dancer Rihanoff - who is currently dating former partner and ex-rugby player Ben Cohen - but he told The Sun: "It would have been nice for Kristina to get a young sports star.
"She got me, but she seems happy enough."
On Rihanoff's relationship with Cohen - who's still married to his wife of 13 years Abbie - O'Donnell continued: "None of us can help who you fall in love with."
He was, however, keen to assure that it's "strictly dancing" between the pair, and that his wife Majella "was never threatened" by their coupling.
"I think the three of us could be good friends. It is strictly dancing between Kristina and I," he added.

Strictly Come Dancing's Kristina Rihanoff was gutted to be paired with Daniel O'Donnell, according to Craig Revel Horwood.
Speaking to the Daily Star, the judge made reference to Rihanoff's relationships with previous celebrity in past years of the show.
"When she got paired with [O'Donnell], I think she was gutted!" Horwood said. "But it was rather obvious she wasn't going to get a hot, young celeb after everything that has happened.
"It's natural to fall in love with your dance partner when you're spending so much time together, and Kristina's managed a few times! But somehow I don't think that will be the case this time around."
Rihanoff, who dated retired boxer Joe Calzaghe after they were paired up in 2009, recently confirmed that she and ex-rugby player Ben Cohen are in a relationship.
"We are in a committed relationship, and of course, part of that involves love," she said at the time.

Strictly Come Dancing pro Kristina Rihanoff has confirmed that she and former dance partner Ben Cohen are in a relationship, and described it as a "work in progress".
Russian dancer Rihanoff was paired up with ex-rugby player Cohen - who has been married to Abby Cohen since 2003 - during 2013's BBC One ballroom dancing competition.
Speaking to The Sun about their long-rumoured romance, Rihanoff said: "We are in a committed relationship, and of course, part of that involves love.
"We're constantly together - either at my place or his. We're still very new so there's much more left to grow hopefully. It's a work in progress."
But the performer has vehemently denied that she was responsible for Cohen's marriage breakdown, continuing: "Ben's said it many times and I'll say it again - I wasn't involved in the breaking up of his marriage.
"Lots of relationships start because you're attracted to someone.

Does Kristina Rihanoff really want to leave Strictly Come Dancing?
Reports in The Sun have suggested that the professional dancer wants to quit the hit BBC programme because of the media attention she's faced lately thanks to her relationship with Ben Cohen.
Rihanoff admitted earlier this year that she considered leaving the show, but the new rumours claim that she's now regretting her decision to sign up for another series.
The report alleges that she's told friends she can't take the criticism over her relationship, but if she left it would mean the BBC would have to find another professional dancer - just weeks before the new series of Strictly launches.
But does Rihanoff really want to leave? After all, she looked happy to be back with her fellow pros in a group shot from training earlier this month.

The photo also shows Ola Jordan looking in good health after she picked up a knee injury during training for Channel 4's The Jump at the end of last year; she later admitted that she feared she might never walk again.

Ben Cohen has revealed that the Strictly Come Dancing wardrobe team are behind his shirtless performances.
The 35-year-old admitted that he thinks he looks stupid in certain costumes, but has little choice in the matter.
"I don't really have any say," he told Digital Spy. "I go down to the dressing room [and] they'll say, 'This week you're in a navy outfit' and I'm like, 'You're f**king joking?'
"I look stupid, but there's no point in me coming on here and putting restrictions on everything.
"There's a limit, obviously, but the lycra, the sequins, the getting your chest out, it's fun for crying out loud!
"It's part of it and you have to embrace that. [But] you can't keep getting your top off. You can't keep getting your arms out. It's generally about keeping a balance."
Cohen and his partner Kristina Rihanoff will be dancing the Charleston to 'No Diggity' on tonight's (November 23) show.

Ben Cohen has revealed that he turned down the chance to appear on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! in favour of taking part in Strictly Come Dancing.
The former England international admitted that producers from the ITV reality show approached him last year, but he declined their offer.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Cohen explained that he wanted to be involved in a project that wouldn't conflict with his anti-bullying foundation's message.
"Strictly is the best one to do. I got offered to do I'm a Celebrity last year and I didn't want to do it.
"This is the right show, the right audience to promote the message of the [Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation]."
He continued: "The only reason why I [signed up for] Strictly was to raise the profile of the foundation.
"I wanted to put myself in a position where I'd be criticised, to show to others that you can rise above it through hard work and dedication.

Ireland Baldwin defends Alec on Twitter, Liz Cheney opposes her own sister’s marriage to get elected, how Breaking Bad should have ended
Lady Gaga may have killed it on Saturday Night Live, but sales of her album are evidently pretty disappointing, to the point that a $25 million advertising spend may lead to layoffs at Interscope records.
Liz Cheney is running for the Senate in Wyoming, and says that she doesn’t support marriage equality, despite having a married lesbian sister and a father who supports marriage equality. “I don’t believe we ought to discriminate against people because of their sexual orientation. If people are in a same-sex relationship and they want their partner to be able to have health benefits or be designated as a beneficiary in your life insurance, there’s no reason we shouldn’t do that… I also don’t support amending the Constitution on this issue.
