Paul Greengrass' long in gestation biopic about rock Jimi Hendrix seems to be picking up steam again at Legendary Pictures.
Four years ago the filmmaker attempted to go forward on the film, but backed off when he did not receive the co-operation of the estate of the late musician.
That patience has now paid off with Legendary and Experience Hendrix coming to an agreement that will see the film become what aims to be the officially sanctioned film about the psychedelically dressed guitar virtuoso and rock icon who died at just 27 in 1970.
With that co-operation, Hendrix's best known tunes like Purple Haze and Foxy Lady will now be used as part of the film.
Scott Silver ("8 Mile," "The Fighter") has been set to write the script and negotiations are in various stages for Greengrass to direct and Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, Janie Hendrix, John McDermott, and Peter Afterman to...

Exclusive: Jimi Hendrix has become an ICM Partners client. The agency has signed Experience Hendrix LLC, the family-owned enterprise that controls the songs and rights of the legendary late guitar player. The agency’s first order of business: to amplify its client’s efforts to produce a feature film chronicling Hendrix’s life story. The film will be the very first to be authorized by and have the full cooperation of Experience Hendrix — and believe me, many actors and film companies will covet that opportunity. The company was founded by the guitarist’s father James “Al” Hendrix and now is helmed by Janie Hendrix, President and CEO and the sister of the guitar great, who died in 1970 after recording just four albums that were enough to make him arguably the greatest rocker to plug a guitar into an amp. A Candid Look At André 3000 as Jimmy Hendrix
Producing films about a celebrities life can always be a tricky thing. At the most base level, you're tasked with summarizing a person's life and compacting it into a 90-minute morsel of motion picture. The subject of the film, whether alive or deceased, has a family that wants nothing more than to maintain their loved one's legacy. In that vein, Experience Hendrix LLC, headed by his sister Janie Hendrix, has recently denied the film makers of the biopic, entitled All Is By My Side, access to Jimmy Hendrix's song library unless they have full participation in the production.

Reports say Hendrix estate rejected mooted project involving director Paul Greengrass and actor Anthony Mackie
Hollywood has been trying to bring a film about Jimi Hendrix to the big screen for decades, with actors such as Will Smith, Eddie Murphy and Outkast's Andre 3000 all reportedly interested in the role at one time or another. Now, the latest attempt – directed by Paul Greengrass and starring the Hurt Locker's Anthony Mackie – has foundered, allegedly because his estate fears that a warts-and-all biopic might hit record sales.
Deadline reports that Hendrix's estate rejected a package put together by Legendary Pictures, the firm behind The Dark Knight and Watchmen, earlier this year, stating that it had not been involved at an early enough stage.
"Legendary proceeded without our permission, direction or involvement," said Janie Hendrix, president of the Experience Hendrix company. "It didn't 'fall apart,' it never was. When we do the Jimi Hendrix feature film bio,...

My initial response to this was surprise! In recent years, there’ve been numerous attempts to bring Jimi Hendrix’s life-story to the theatrical screen, with such musician/actors as Lenny Kravitz and Outkast’s Andre Benjamin expressing interest in assuming the starring role of the greatest guitarist in the history of rock music. But securing rights to the man’s story has proven to be quite the challenge with Experience Hendrix, the gatekeeper to the musician’s estate, which is run by his stepsister, Janie Hendrix.
As we’ve previously reported on this blog, there are Two Jimi Hendrix films in the works that we’ve known of, and one of them, the Mackie version, now looks like it’s dead.

Mike Fleming is reporting that the estate of late rocker Jimi Hendrix has turned down a promising pitch for a Paul Greengrass directed biopic of the American Icon that would have starred Hurt Locker actor Anthony Mackie in the title role.
The rejected package, which included financial clout from Legendary Pictures and a commitment from the talent to film next year, was turned down because the family estate feared a high-profile film might hurt back catalogue sales. (If you believe that, you’ll believe anything).
The movie is the latest in a long line of potential Hendrix biopics (Will Smith & Eddie Murphy have previously tried, among others) that have been snuffed out by Experience Hendrix, an estate that heavily protects the singer’s memory and the four influential albums he made in his short but productive 27 years of life.

Exclusive: A promising package for a feature film on guitar god Jimi Hendrix looks dead -- confirmed as recently as of today. Even though it had financing from Legendary Pictures, and a directing commitment from Oscar-nominated Paul Greengrass, and The Hurt Locker’s Anthony Mackie poised to star. The pic went belly up earlier this year because Experience Hendrix, gatekeeper for the dead musician's music rights, refused to authorize the film out of fear it could hurt the music catalog. Legendary Pictures and its chief Thomas Tull certainly aren't the first to be interested in filming the story of Hendrix, who died in 1970 at age 27 and recorded just four albums. But is still considered the greatest rocker to ever plug in an electric guitar. Rock Band has definitely been opening its doors to a much wider range of music.
From the highly anticipated Rust in Peace album to the more recently released Otis Redding tracks, it seems that everyone can be getting at least something out of the popular rhythm game.
And things are about to get even better c especially for those of you who enjoy the psychedelic, rocking jams of the late 60’s and 70’s; According to the La Times, Rock Band will be getting more Jimi Hendrix by the end of 2010.
They’ll be issued under a long-term contract that Janie Hendrix signed last year with Sony Music after the 12 years that Universal Music handled all Hendrix releases. The catalog will include the release of "Valleys of Neptune," a newly curated album of 12 fully realized studio recordings and more than 60 minutes of music never commercially available on a Jimi Hendrix album.
The tracks were recorded in 1969 during a turbulent four-month time period. Jimi Hendrix's sister has stated that there is still "another decade" of unreleased music and video to come from the guitarist. Janie Hendrix, also president and CEO of Experience Hendrix and Authentic Hendrix - the company in charge of his legacy, hinted that she plans to release all of the singer's unheard material over the next ten years. "We probably have another decade of music, including video. Every 12 to 18 months we'll continue to have new releases and official bootlegs," she told Gibson, who is launching a new line of Jimi Hendrix model guitars. "Jimi was a workaholic. After Electric Lady (more)...

From the Jimi Hendrix estate to Legendary Pictures: Not so fast on that biopic... yet. Legendary Pictures is the latest production company to embark on a feature about the seminal guitarist. But, like others before it, Legendary has not secured the rights to use Hendrix's music, according to Variety. Legendary hopes to win the blessing (and music rights) of Experience Hendrix, the artist's estate overseen by his stepsister Janie Hendrix, after shooting the film. Today, Hendrix's estate responded to the story: "Just like the many discussions we have had over the years with other producers who have expressed an interest in...

You might have heard that this year is the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. We've got Taking Woodstock on the way, and now we're getting a reminder that we still haven't gotten big-screen Jimi Hendrix rife with the music that made him an icon. (Like his Woodstock performance of "The Star Spangled Banner.") There was the mess back in 2006, but now Variety reports that Legendary Pictures is eager to get a biopic in the works. But, you see, they don't have the rights.
Rather than doing things the logical way -- that is, getting the green light from the rights holders and then creating the project -- they're going to cross their fingers and do it the opposite way. "The company's plan is to develop the project first, then try to win the cooperation of the estate." At the very least, it would mean that Legendary would have to cook up...

In "The Sandlot," Babe Ruth wisely informed Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez that "heroes get remembered, but legends never die." Luckily for Jimi Hendrix, he may well get to enjoy both of those luxuries.
Variety reports that a Hendrix biopic is currently in the works through Thomas Tull's Legendary Pictures. The feature film would focus on the life and career of Hendrix, the rock & roll legend whose mastery over the guitar has melted the faces of music lovers since the 1960s. The script is being written by Max Borenstein, who previously wrote the 9/11-inspired "What Is Life Worth?," which was never produced.
Born James Marshall Hendrix, the famed guitarist has plenty of memorable songs in his catalogue, including "Purple Haze," "Hey Joe," "Foxy Lady," "Fire" and a cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" that many consider the definitive version of the song. The artist died under mysterious...

The legend of Jimi Hendrix lives on!
There's a new feature film being planned by Legendary Pictures about the icon. But the big question, will this project being written by Max Borenstein see the light of day?
From Lenny Kravitz to Outkast's Andre Benjamin, there have been many numerous attempts to make a Hendrix film starring musician-actors to no avail. The problem? Getting the musician's estate, run by his stepsister Janie Hendrix, to approve the projects.
How is Legendary going to succeed this time? Their plan is to develop the movie first, then hope and pray the estate will give the project its blessings. But Legendary has been in talks with the estate because without the music featuring the genius of Hendrix, there will be no movie.

Legendary Pictures is in discussions with the estate of Jimi Hendrix about doing a movie covering the musician's life. While the deal hasn't closed the production company has hired screenwriter Max Borenstein to work on ideas for executing a biopic that would honor Hendrix's life and accomplishments.
Legendary has been a powerhouse of blockbusters, usually within the superhero genre. They bankrolled The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Superman Returns, 300 and are also developing the Warcraft movie that Sam Raimi will direct. Considering Jimi's mark on the world of music it's unusual that there hasn't been a film covering Hendrix made yet though there has been many courters. The late musician's sister and keeper of his estate, Janie Hendrix, apparently has a high standard that any potential Hendrix picture has to reach before she will give the project her permission to become a reality. That's why Legendary is already working out the...
