The return of a live audience to the Indianapolis 500 also saw the return of a veteran driver to the winner’s circle.
Helio Castroneves, at 46 one of oldest drivers in the field, joined the exclusive four-time winners club, gaining his first victory in motor sports’ most fabled race since 2009. The race was televised and streamed by NBC.
He celebrated his achievement by scaling a fence and sprinting across the speedway track to wave to the 135,000 fans in attendance, the largest post-pandemic crowd yet.
Joining him during his victory job were multiple drivers and most of Team Penske, the organization where he spent more than two decades and won three Indy 500s.
In winning, Castroneves joins A.J. Foyt, Al Unser Sr. and Rick Mears, his former mentor at Team Penske, as the only four-time winners of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” Mears was the last driver to join the club in 1991.

Dreamworks Animation have just announced a collaboration with Indycar for a feature length animation set for release next year called Turbo.
Following their great success with the Shrek films, and its recent spin-off Puss in Boots, the Kung-Fu Panda films and the sublime How to Train Your Dragon the studio are looking to the racetrack for their next film which is summed up neatly as thus,

Comparisons to Pixar’s Cars will no doubt follow from this announcement but Dwa have a decent line in original content and there’s sure to be a whole host of talent eager to lend voices to this production, not to mention a ton of merchandise. The film already...

Helio Castroneves won the Indianapolis 500 for the third time in his career Sunday.
The win serves as an exclamation point on the former Dancing with the Stars champ's recent acquittal of federal tax evasion charges that could have sent his career to the pits for good. A jury acquitted Castroneves of most of the charges against him last month, saving him from a six-year prison sentence. The remaining count was dismissed last Friday, according to The Associated Press.
"This is the best month of May ever," Castroneves said in tears after the race in Victory Lane. "Thank you for giving my life back," he said to his racing team owner Roger Penske during a hug.
With the win, Castroneves is one Indy win from joining racing elites A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears as the only to win the iconic race four times. Is breaking the record on Castroneves' mind?...
