TikTok creators are voicing their opposition to the U.S. government’s regulatory plans. As the Senate considers a proposal that would force ByteDance to divest its popular video app, 17 TikTokers have signed an open letter that urges President Biden to reconsider.
The open letter includes five talking points that underscore TikTok’s contributions to the creator economy. The signees pushed back on arguments made by TikTok’s opponents by celebrating their open expression on the app and the financial support they’ve received from it. They also warned the president not to antagonize TikTok’s Gen Z audience during an election year; while older consumers may see the app as a security risk, its younger users “do not feel endangered” and do not believe Congressional distrust is warranted.
The signees cited Project Texas as evidence that TikTok is taking security concerns seriously, and they stressed that they would continue to support the app.

‘The Out-Laws’ Review: Adam Devine Tangles With Pierce Brosnan In Over-Stuffed Netflix Action Comedy
In 1979, Peter Falk and the late great Alan Arkin made the perfect odd couple in the classic action comedy The In-Laws. It even spawned a not-bad remake with Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks in 2003. The difference between those films, and a bit of an attempt to do something similar in the cleverly titled The Out-Laws, which starts streaming on Netflix today, is that those movies were genuinely funny –particularly the Arkin-Falk teaming. But this one, also a kind of Meet the Parents on steroids, relies far too heavily on nonstop and incessant action scenes to carry us through its 95-minute running time.
The fault here does not lie with its cast, which is pretty impressive overall. Basically this is a comedic vehicle for Adam Devine, who not only stars but also helped develop the Ben Zazove and Evan Turner script as well as producing with Happy Madison’s Adam Sandler and Allen Covert.

Like the chicken and the egg, it’s hard to know what came first for the new Adam Sandler-produced Netflix feature, The Out-Laws: Was it the title or the concept?
My gut would lean toward the former, so much does this watchable if forgettable crime comedy feel like an entire movie wrapped around a simple play on words. In case you somehow missed it, imagine for one second that your mysterious in-laws arrived in town on the brink of your wedding and turned out to be “out-laws.” Get it?
As silly as that sounds, the out-laws in question, played by Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin, manage to carry the concept to a few fun places, mostly because their characters — a pair of bank robbers named Billy and Lilly — truly look like they don’t give a shit. Compared to their yoga-teaching daughter, Parker (Nina Dobrev), and her fiancé,...

Tyler Spindel’s The Out-Laws is exactly the kind of film that streaming services have promised to showcase for years but have rarely delivered. Written by Ben Zazove and Evan Turner, it’s the sort of breezily pleasurable, mid-budget, and intimately scaled movie that used to be a staple of the video stores that streaming helped to kill.
Tightly wound bank manager Owen (Adam DeVine), on the eve of his nuptials to Parker (Nina Dobrev), finally meets her parents, Billy (Pierce Brosnan) and Lilly (Ellen Barkin), only for his excitement to quickly turn sour when his bank is robbed by bandits whom he strongly suspects are his future in-laws. Before Owen can confirm his suspicions, though, Billy and Lilly get their cover blown by a rival thief (Poorna Jagannathan), who takes Parker hostage to extort her parents, forcing them (and Owen) to commit further robberies to pay her ransom.

What if you managed a bank, and your fiancée’s folks turned out to be notorious bank robbers who saw their prospective son-in-law as the perfect patsy for their next hit? Not a bad setup for hijinks and hilarity. That’s what the filmmakers behind “The Out-Laws” are hoping, anyway. Produced by Adam Sandler (among others) and directed by Tyler Spindel, the not-so-original Netflix original plays like “Meet the Parents” crossed with “Fun with Dick and Jane.” Seeing as how the former inspired several sequels and the latter a remake, the situational comedy on offer is hardly fresh, though it still could (and should) have been funnier.
As Owen Browning, Adam Devine takes the mantle from Sandler to play a schlubby everyman partnered with a gorgeous woman (Nina Dobrev) out of his league. Naturally, he’s kind-hearted and willing to sacrifice all for his one true love. And that’s...

It seems like every summer we bemoan the death of original ideas in Hollywood, but films set around the winter holidays are rife with concepts that studios will continue to mine until the end of filmmaking as we know it. According to Variety, Paramount Pictures and Walden Media (the company behind the Chronicles of Narnia films) are looking to return to that well of ideas yet again for another holiday-based comedy, this one called The Flight Before Christmas. The idea was hatched by Walden executive Evan Turner, and will follow a family as they deal with the flight from hell on Christmas Eve. Sounds scarier than snakes. No actors are attached yet, but the studios have already hired Jamie Linden to write and direct the project. Linden wrote and directed the upcoming ensemble comedy 10 Years, and also wrote and produced We Are Marshall and the Channing Tatum hit Dear John.

Walden Media, the studio behind family films like Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and The Chronicles of Narnia movies, is teaming up with Paramount Pictures for The Flight Before Christmas. As anyone who has flown somewhere for the holidays knows, holiday flights are particularly crazy - the family in this film is experiencing the craziest holiday flight. Of course, two of the top comedies of all time are Planes, Trains and Automobiles - about two guys who team up to get home for the holidays and Airplane! -- so certainly there's plenty of humor to be mined in this premise.
Jamie Linden (the upcoming Channing Tatum-starrer 10 Years) will write and direct; he was the scribe on Dear John and We Are Marshall. While clearly Linden has a relationship with Tatum, no actors have yet been cast.

Merry early Christmas to Jamie Linden. The budding writer-director has just been given what could be a sizable gift from Paramount and Walden Media, as the 10 Years filmmaker has been set to write and direct their The Flight Before Christmas project. Variety reports that the film, which sounds as if it was conceived almost totally to serve its punny title and in complete disregard for whether or not this plot sounds funny or fresh, actually comes from an idea from Walden executive Evan Turner and revolves around “a family trying to survive the plane ride from hell on Christmas Eve.” I have broken out in hives already. Linden’s resume may also make you dear readers break out in hives. The filmmaker has previously pulled double duty with screenwriting and producing credits on We Are Marshall (hives because you’re crying too much and it’s irritating your delicate skin) and Dear John (hives because it’s...

Traveling during the holidays is a special brand of torment. From crowded planes, trains and buses, to cumbersome luggage packed with presents, to kids eager for Santa's arrival but impatient with everything else, it's an element of the most wonderful time of the year most of us absolutely dread. So why not make a comedy about it? That's the thought process behind Paramount and Walden Media's collaborative effort The Flight Before Christmas, a comedy dreamed up by Walden executive Evan Turner that will focus on one family's hectic Christmas Eve flight. Variety reports the film is officially in development, with Paramount picking writer turned writer-director Jamie Linden to pen and helm the project. Linden has previously scripted the football-centered drama We Are Marshall and the romantic drama Dear John, based on the Nicolas Sparks' novel. However, he recently branched out into comedy along with helming for his directorial debut...

Finding the sort of Christmas/holiday comedy that the whole family will turn out for is one of the holy grails of Hollywood studios. Now Paramount and Walden Media are hoping they might be on to a winner with The Flight Before Christmas, which Jamie Linden has written and aims to direct.Plot details on the film are scarce according to Variety, but, as you might be able to guess from the title, the story will follow a family trying to stay sane as they weather the flight from hell on Christmas Eve.Walden executive Evan Turner cooked up the original idea, which Linden is turning into a screenplay. The writer, who worked on We Are Marshall and Dear John, has just turned director, working on Channing Tatum romantic comedy drama 10 Years, which is released in the Us on September 21, but has yet to score a date over here. The next step...

And here’s another graphic novel adaptation for the ever-growing list: Variety reports that Walden Media is moving ahead with their development of Rex Libris, having tapped Ben Zazove to adapt the humor sci-fi graphic novel written, illustrated, and created by James Turner.
Movement began last summer when Walden acquired feature rights to the novel, which follows “the zombie-slaying adventures of librarian Rex Libris as he protects the books of the Middleton Public Library and guards the world’s literary treasures from a host of supernatural foes.” After being issued in quarterly installments from 2005 to 2008, I can see Walden’s draw to the project. With Hollywood following the zombiecraze over the past few years and people loving every second of it, it only makes sense to start production as quickly as possible, before the well runs dry.
Evan Turner and Michale Bostick are producing for Walden, with Brent Lilley for Slave Labor Graphics.

I’d heard that Walden Media will develop the property as a vehicle for Lopez to play the title character, but Walden Media said at this point, she’s attached to produce only. The hope is to turn the property into National Treasure meets The Thomas Crown Affair. The logline: When the Acme agency’s greatest detective Carmen Sandiego becomes the world’s greatest thief, it’s up to her former partner to follow her clues and track her down. Their cat-and-mouse game leads the partner to confront a greater mystery: Is Carmen really a thief or a hero? Exclusive: Walden Media has acquired film rights to Flat Stanley, the series of children's books created in 1964 by Jeff Brown about the adventures of a two-dimensional person stuck in a 3D world. The plan is to shoot the film live action, using visual effects to turn the lead character into a one-dimensional hero (why do I feel like I've given Deadline commenters a wealth of ammunition to discuss the current state of 3D and certain leading actors with those last two sentences?) The protagonist is Stanley Lambchop, who, after being given a bulletin board by his father to put above his bed, is flattened by it in the night. He's Ok despite his appearance and can slip under doors and entertain his brother by posing as a kite. He even solves an art heist by posing as a wall painting. The series has sold millions of copies around the world.

Walden Media is bringing U.K. author Frank Cottrell Boyce's children's book "Cosmic" to the big screen.
Boyce, also a screenwriter, will adapt his own novel, which is a comedy described as "Apollo 13" meets "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." It follows a boy who, after going through an early growth spurt, is often mistaken for an adult. One day he decides to pose as his best friend's father in order to snag a seat on an experimental spaceship ride. The journey goes awry and he needs to save the crew.
The book was released through Walden Pond Press, the joint venture between Walden Media and HarperCollins.
"The hero of 'Cosmic' is a boy who goes further away from Earth than any human being has ever been, but his big discoveries are all about family and home," Boyce said.
