Sydney Film Festival (June 5-16) has unveiled the 12 titles that will play in competition at its 71st edition, including six features that are set to premiere at Cannes this month.
Fresh from playing in Competition at Cannes will be Kinds of Kindness, starring Emma Stone and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, who won the Sydney Film Prize in 2012 with Alps. Further Palme d’Or contenders selected for Sydney include Grand Tour from Portugal’s Miguel Gomes, whose Arabian Nights won the Sydney Film Prize in 2015; Christophe Honoré’s French-Italian comedy Marcello Mio; and Payal Kapadia’s Indian romantic drama All We Imagine As Light.

Argentinian actor Marcelo Subiotto has spent much of his life in supporting roles but has been gradually making his presence felt more on the international stage with the likes of 2021’s Dusk Stone, which played at both Venice and San Sebastian Film Festivals. Droll comedy Puan - about hapless philosophy professor Marcelo (played by Subiotto) who finds himself vying for a top job against a former classmate Rafael (Leonardo Sbaraglia) after the unexpected death of his mentor - is likely to further cement that.

Anyone familiar with the often disquieting solo work of directors María Alché and Benjamín Naishtat may be put on high uneasiness-alert by the opening scene of “Puan,” their first co-directed feature. Despite the jaunty pop song playing, an older man going for a morning jog in a scrubby Buenos Aires park, suddenly keels over dead of a heart attack. Given the surreal griefscape of Alché’s “A Family Submerged” or the sinister tides of Naishtat’s superb “Rojo”, there’s every possibility that the music is a red herring, and the death portends what is to come. But perhaps that is “Puan”‘s first joke.

Robin Campillo’s Red Island and Cristi Puiu’s Mmxx are among the first titles to be selected in competition for this year’s San Sebastian Film Festival (September 22-30).
Campillo makes his first appearance competing at the festival with French-Belgium co-production Red Island about the French colonisation of Madagascar. The San Sebastián Film Festival has revealed the Official Selection for its latest edition, which is due to unfold from September 22 — 30.
The festival, which is celebrating its 71st edition, will screen Romanian filmmaker Cristi Puiu’s latest film Mmxx in competition. The festival describes the pic as a story that captures the “wanderings of a bunch of errant souls stuck at the crossroads of history.”

Italy’s Kino Produzioni, the indie shingle that co-produced 2022 Berlin Golden Bear winner “Alcarràs,” is ramping up production with new films by emerging Italian filmmakers Carlo Sironi, Laura Luchetti and Irene Dionisio, as well as also Dutch director Michiel Van Erp and Argentine filmmakers María Alché and Benjamín Naishtat.
“We reached a turning point last year that started out well with the ‘Alcarràs’ victory,” said Kino chief Giovanni Pompili, speaking at the EFM. He noted that in 2022, the Rome-based outfit shot four films, “which for us was pretty challenging, but worked out well.”
Meanwhile, the Kino team has grown. Producer Lara Costa-Calzado, who has been working for a decade between the U.S. and Europe on films such as Eliza Hittman’s Silver Bear winner “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” Sally Potter’s “The Roads Not Taken” and Halina Rejin’s “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” has joined Kino as head of production.

Set primarily on the highways and in truck stops along the seemingly endless ranges of Chile’s southern Andes, Rios’ road film tracks an estranged father and daughter who end up on the same lonely road headed south. LibertyThe Locarno Festival, its host town pinned between lake and mountain, is likewise sandwiched each August between the two premiere hot-weather European film festivals of Cannes and Venice. Aside from the justifiably famous 8,000 seat capacity screenings in the city’s open-air Piazza Grande, Locarno wisely cedes both red carpet camera-seeking impulses as well as big-name openings to these more celebrity-focused institutions. In favor of pursuing a wide-ranging presentation of new films, the festival generally favors a smaller, more idiosyncratic side of art cinema that at its best can be greatly freeing and deeply engaged. The 71st edition promises several anticipated pictures, including a new feature by the delightful American “anti-animator” Jodie Mack, who usually works in short films, the fifth Hong Sang-soo movie in 18 months, the feature debut of María Alche—the lead actress from Lucrecia Martel’s The Holy Girl—and Argentine director Mariano Llinás’s long-awaited (and 13.5 hour!

World premieres for Patricia Rozema, Guy Édoin and Stephen Dunn are among the selection scheduled to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff).
