Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Anyone But You (Will Gluck)
If anything, Anyone But You‘s spirit is encapsulated in having a running joke about “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield (gags involving that artist’s back catalog seeming to be the Will Gluck auteurist touch) as if the movie’s wholly bland pop soundtrack puts it above that at-least-memorable 2000s ditty. Slight self-awareness with no effort to actually do anything new is the definition of unearned arrogance. This is why it fails as a romcom: too much smarm and not enough charm. – Ethan V. (full review)
Where to Stream: Netflix
Garrett Bradley: Devotion
If you’ve only seen Garrett Bradley’s staggering, Oscar-nominated documentary Time, it’s prime time to catch up on a pair of her earlier work.

Sydney Sweeney is a marketing genius. That’s Glen Powell’s reasoning for how their rom-com “Anyone but You” went from anything but a success to a box-office and VOD hit.
“The two things that you have to sell a rom-com are fun and chemistry. Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry,” Powell told the New York Times. “That’s people wanting what’s on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit — and it worked wonderfully. Sydney is very smart.”
Sweeney, who also executive produced the film through her Fifty-Fifty Films banner, was directly behind the “Anyone but You” marketing strategy. It included romantic pictures of her and Powell, longing looks on red carpets, and lots of flirting in interviews. And when Powell and his long-term girlfriend broke up, the rumors heated up.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 11, Episode 4 of “The Masked Singer,” “TV Theme Night,” which aired March 27 on Fox.
“Extra” host Billy Bush won’t get an extra shot at “The Masked Singer.” The entertainment newsmagazine anchor and one-time morning drive radio host was the next celebrity to be unmasked on Wednesday’s “TV Theme Night” edition of “The Masked Singer.”
“I’m not a great singer,” Bush said. “If you can’t make it with the lips, make it with the hips. If you’ve never done something that’s a little on the scary side — and this is scary — say yes!”
For Bush, none of the panelists got it right. Robin Thicke guessed Anderson Cooper. Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg picked Seth Meyers. Ken Jeong picked Ryan Seacrest. New panelist Rita Ora said it was Andy Cohen.

If superhero movie enthusiasts are feeling a little bummed out about the genre's recent downturn in popularity, they can comfort in knowing that, as a wise woman once wrote, "Today is where your book begins; the rest is still unwritten." That particular singer and songwriter, Natasha Bedingfield, would know what's she talking about, too, having recently enjoyed a return to the spotlight thanks to her breakthrough hit, "Unwritten," being prominently featured in last year's surprise box office champion, "Anyone But You."
A loose retelling of William Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing," the Sydney Sweeney-Glen Powell vehicle is a throwback to Hollywood's pre-superhero renaissance days in more ways than one. Part fizzy rom-com and part R-rated sex farce (it's genuinely impressive how many flimsy excuses this film comes up with for its absurdly good-looking cast to take their clothes off), "Anyone But You" also marks a return to the '...

Sony’s Will Gluck-directed Anyone But You crossed $200M globally over this past weekend, injecting fresh life into the romcom genre and proving yet again that when done right, these films can travel theatrically and bring audiences together for a communal experience.
Savvy marketing, viral moments and two hot young stars in Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney — each with significant social engagement — were a key factor to the $25M film’s success. Some of the numbers are staggering: There have been 2.8 billion views of the hashtag #AnyoneButYou on TikTok. And, it was unexpected icing that a 20-year-old song, Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten,” became an anthem for fans.
Since it began a staggered overseas rollout in December with the UK and Australia the only majors in play until mid-January, Anyone But You kept seeing incredible holds, some weeks down infinitesimally and some weeks up by a good margin.

All of Us Strangers (Andrew Haigh)
There are many films about the devastating effects of the AIDS crisis, but very few that grapple with the loneliness of those left behind or came of age as it began to make headlines. Through supernatural metaphor, Andrew Haigh’s latest––and best––film tackles the existential displacement of a gay man (Andrew Scott) fast approaching middle age, his isolation only underlined by the near-abandoned tower block in which he lives. His friends have long moved out of the city, he has to maneuver a generational divide with a new, younger romantic partner (Paul Mescal) whose adolescence was far different to his, and he feels a longing to return to his childhood and come out to...

Sydney asked Glen if he needed her to “do that thing that calms you down,” and he shyly said, “Not in front of all these people.” However, Sydney started singing Natasha Bedingfield‘s “Unwritten” and the crowd joined in.
He reluctantly joined in and they both sang along with the crowd before bringing Natasha herself!
If you didn’t know, this moment was a nice tie-in to their movie Anyone But You.
Check out the video inside…
In the film, whenever Glen‘s character gets nervous or anxious, he used “Unwritten” as his “serenity song” to help him feel better.

The critically acclaimed film won Movie of the Year, Comedy Movie, Male Movie Star (Ryan Gosling), Female Movie Star (Margot Robbie), and Movie Performance of the Year (America Ferrera) awards, and one of its Kens – Simu Liu – hosted the awards show.

I suppose going into a movie like Anyone But You with no expectations helps it land in the “oh, it really wasn’t that bad” category. I’m the exact target demographic for this film; it’s a rom-com with the cheesiness of late 90s and early 2000s rom-coms, two of the hottest (white) actors on the scene today, and a ridiculously cringy plot that is predictable from start to finish. It’s entertaining; there’s some gorgeous scenery and some splendid outfits, and everyone looks stunning, but the most important thing is that the heart is believable amidst the glamour and snark of it all. No, this is not some Oscar-worthy film, nor is it the best romance you’ve ever seen, and no, it’s not even the best comedy you’ve ever seen, but it’s still infectiously amusing, so I’d say it’s worth a watch.

Ashley Park announced on Instagram that she is recovering from a bout of illness that hospitalized her for the first few weeks of 2024.
The “Emily in Paris” star wrote that while on vacation in December she developed tonsillitis, which “spiraled into critical septic shock, which infected and affected several of my organs.”
“I am grateful that my health has improved despite what we had initially been told,” Park wrote in a caption accompanying photos of her hooked up to tubes and IVs in a hospital bed.
The actor, who most recently appeared in the “Mean Girls” movie musical, went on to thank her husband, Paul Forman, for “being unconditionally by my side through all this.”
Park wrote, “You calmed my fears and held me through ambulances, three foreign hospitals, a week in the ICU, scary ERs, countless scans and tests and injections, excruciating pain, and so much confusion all while...

TikTok may have just saved romantic comedies from being banished forever from the big screen to the hinterlands of streaming.
Sony’s Anyone But You, based on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, has become a box office darling and could reach $85 million to $100 million domestically against a $25 million budget, despite mediocre reviews and an equally meh B+ CinemaScore. It has impressed Hollywood to the point where normally adversarial studio heads are gushing over the film’s astounding run as if it were their own.
After opening to a lowly $8 million over Christmas weekend, the Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell romancer went viral after moviegoers began flooding TikTok with videos of themselves reenacting the film’s credit sequence, which is overlaid with actors from the film dancing to and singing snippets of Natasha Bedingfield’s 2004 single “Unwritten.” The self-made videos have become so well known that in cinemas across the country,...

Early 2020s mainstream cinema may be continually dire, but even a fanatic like me is still willing to recognize patterns within. You can certainly place the new Christmas-released, R-rated trifle Anyone But You as part of the Ticket to Paradise / Marry Me theatrical-romcom wave: one that runs counter to the genre having been dominated by streamers Netflix and Amazon Prime in recent years. The belief being that people will just gradually have to return to the low-stakes genre in a theatrical setting, if only through pure nostalgia or apathy towards tentpoles.
This release from Sony––the only major distributor without a streaming service––differs its entry into the wave through a key factor. Whereas those aforementioned two films relied on middle-aged actors who cut their teeth on mid-range films to ease older people back to the genre they once loved, this is a platform for two rising stars: Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell,...

America has been starved for pure, unapologetic, multiplex-grade romantic comedies, and Will Gluck’s “Anyone but You” doesn’t waste any time announcing itself as one of those. The first five minutes alone serve up a classic meet-cute in a coffee shop, a funny but wholly illogical bit of physical comedy involving a splash of water that might be mistaken for a pee stain, and a magical — but chaste — night together in a personality-less bachelor pad that looks just like an Ikea showroom.
If not for the hint of self-awareness that allows Bea (Sydney Sweeney) to put Ben (Glen Powell) on blast for his dude-bro decor, nothing about this prologue would seem the least bit out of place at the start of a mid-tier Julia Roberts movie from 1997. Not the leading man whose chiseled smile makes your own features seem like the parody of a face by comparison, nor the...

Anyone who’s seen Glen Powell in Richard Linklater’s terrifically enjoyable Hit Man will know he’s a bona fide movie star with charisma to burn. If you were paying attention, that was evident even in Top Gun: Maverick. And Sydney Sweeney has shown impressive range, serving delicious mean-girl snark in season one of The White Lotus, tracing a self-destructive spiral on Euphoria and demonstrating serious dramatic chops in Reality. But neither screen chemistry nor laughs can be manufactured, especially not with the kind of pedestrian writing in Will Gluck’s Anyone But You, which does nothing to reanimate the moribund studio rom-com.
Before he got busy with two Peter Rabbit movies that apparently do exist, or the unfortunate 2014 Annie remake, Gluck turned heads with the 2010 teen comedy Easy A, a contemporary take on The Scarlet Letter elevated by a star-making turn from Emma Stone. The director riffs on...

Sequels can be big business, but they can also be tricky. While they build off already-existing reputations, they can also set up grand expectations, comparisons between then and now are inevitable, and the patina of nostalgia can sometimes make the “then” seem superior to the “now” by default. Pink Friday 2, the fifth album from firebrand Mc Nicki Minaj, attempts to balance the expectations attached to naming itself after its groundbreaking 2010 predecessor with Minaj’s spirit of constant reinvention and confrontational persona.

Though the SAG-AFTRA strike is still in effect, late night will return starting on Friday with a new episode of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher.” It’s a timeline that puts late night in an odd position: Which guests can appear on late night when the actors’ strike is still in progress?
Luckily, we have an answer to that question thanks to daytime television and SAG-AFTRA’s own rules.
Why can late night return during the SAG-AFTRA strike?
The state of late night is a little bit confusing, because several hosts have also done acting work and are part of SAG-AFTRA. For example, Jimmy Fallon starred in “Fever Pitch” and John Oliver starred in “Community,” as well as the live-action “Lion King.”
Because late-night shows fall under the Network Television Code, these striking performers can return to their jobs. Late night is officially part of what’s called...

Two Friends Edm music duo Eli Sones and Matthew Halper recently revealed that Fyre Festival promoter, Billy McFarland contacted them about performing at a future Fyre Festival.
McFarland’s 2018 Fyre Festival infamously became known as the dumpster fire of music events when McFarland promised hundreds of concert-goers the luxury music festival of a lifetime – and it turned out to be a total con. McFarland ultimately pleaded guilty to defrauding investors, was fined $39 million, and served four years in prison.
Since his release, he’s promised to do Fyre Festival the right way. However, finding strong acts may be pretty tough.
Two Friends wouldn’t consider doing Fyre Festival
McFarland hinted in the press that Fyre Festival 2.0 could be in the works and Two Friends confirmed that the disgraced promoter contacted them.
“Funny enough, I would say probably not,” Sones told Showbiz Cheat Sheet about the possibility of playing Fyre. “But he actually did.

Taylor Swift‘s latest release has fans talking. On Friday, the 33-year-old singer put out her version of her 2010 album, Speak Now, along with six new-to-fan “From the Vault” tracks, one of which is titled “When Emma Falls in Love.”
As soon as fans listened to the song, they quickly began speculating that it’s about exes Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield, who met in 2010 and dated until 2015.
I'm 100% Sure This Is About Emma Stone And Andrew Garfield And I'm About To Collapse pic.twitter.com/U5PfWmIFbp

Swift, a longtime friend of the actress, sings in the track, “When Emma falls in love, she calls up her mom / Jokes about the ways that this one could go wrong / She waits and takes her time / ‘Cause Little Miss Sunshine always thinks it’s gonna rain.”
That section of the song seemed to point to Stone, who’s notably close to her mother.

At this point, it would almost be impossible for “Last Chance U: Basketball” to fail. It’s not that there’s some key formula that any crew can come in and replicate with ease. It’s more that through its football origins, its parallel work on “Cheer,” and at East Los Angeles College for two seasons now, the “Last Chance U: Basketball” crew have identified what it takes to immerse a viewer in a program.
We’ve spoke at length many times about this show’s ability to pick out biographical details, seize on candid moments, and present in-game action with elegance and a level of immediacy just short of strapping a camera to players’ foreheads. All of that is present in “Last Chance U: Basketball” Season 2. It remains one of the best Netflix shows of any genre, and it returns as an immediate entry among the best documentaries of this year.

Hosted by Nick Cannon, and featuring panelists Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke, “The Masked Singer” features celebrities facing off against one another while shrouded from head to toe in elaborate costumes.
The host, panelists, audience, viewers and even the other contestants are left guessing who the singer is behind the mask. Each week, a singer is eliminated — and then reveals his or her true identity.
Of course, none of the contestants sparked as much controversy as the appeaance this season of Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City Mayor and Donald Trump adviser. His reveal saw judges Jeong and Thicke walk away in a huff.

There was a time when reality TV used pop music that was actually popular. Needle drops on Laguna Beach, for example, included songs by Hilary Duff, Dashboard Confessional, and All-American Rejects. Its spinoff The Hills featured songs by Pink, Rihanna, and, of course, Natasha Bedingfield. And then there’s Selling Sunset. Like many other reality shows of the 2010s and 2020s — Love Is Blind, Bling Empire, Married at First Sight, 12 Dates of Christmas, and countless others — Selling Sunset uses music that isn’t recognizable and is thus cheap to license. Much of these shows’ soundtracks comes from vast libraries of stock music with options for every mood, tone, and emotion. But what sets Selling Sunset’s music apart are the ridiculous lyrics. The actual lyrics of a song played during one episode’s main titles: “I’m not the type to break up with my kidney / So watch me while I work.

“The Masked Singer” finale concluded on Wednesday night with Queen of Hearts being crowned the Season 6 champ and claiming the Golden Mask over Bull (Todrick Hall). Her showstopping performances of “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye and “Firework” by Katy Perry landed her in the winner’s circle where she pulled off her mask to reveal Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum superstar Jewel.
“It is just an honor,” Jewel confessed during her unmasked interview with host Nick Cannon. “It really is an honor to be in the hall of costumes and with the other amazing winners. Everybody was so talented on this show. It’s the privilege of a lifetime to get to be yourself. This show, oddly, really gets at your essence and I find that really special. It really reminded me of before I was famous, singing in a coffee shop. To be able to have people just react to your voice,...

“The Masked Singer” finale concluded on Wednesday night with Queen of Hearts winning the Golden Mask and defeating Bull in one of the closest votes in the history of the Fox reality TV competition. Bull gave an inspiring performance of “You Gotta Be” by Des’ree and a stunning, stripped-down rendition of “Invisible” by Hunter Hayes, but it wasn’t enough to dethrone the Queen of Hearts. The hooved singer was then forced to unmask in front of America and reveal himself as singer-songwriter and choreographer, Todrick Hall.
While Todrick fell short on his journey, Nicole Scherzinger won her first Golden Ear trophy when her first impression guess of Todrick was revealed. With three points this season, Nicole defeated fellow panelists Ken Jeong (2 points), Robin Thicke (1 point) and two-time Golden Ear champ Jenny McCarthy (1 point). They each failed to guess Todrick in the end, with Ken naming actor Taye Diggs, Robin...
