FantasyCon made a very big announcement that actor/writer/producer - Simon Pegg will be at their convention - his first con appearance not as a panelist promoting a movie, but to meet and interact with fans. You may have heard of Pegg from his serious art house movies like Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End. He's also been in some other movies that you're probably not familiar with like Star Trek and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.
How cool is it that Pegg wants to come out to an unconventional convention? I'm very thrilled, not only for Mr. Spaced, but because of the emphasis FantasyCon is putting on the fan experience. FantasyCon wants to bring the celebrities out from behind the tables. I love the organic nature of the idea.
How cool would it be to happen upon Pegg in a crowd of people, he sees...

Over 100,000 fans turned out to see the stars and crew behind the 'Hobbit' debut the long-awaited Peter Jackson film, according to Stuff.co.nz.
Andy Serkis ran along the red carpet high-fiving people, while Martin Freeman, who plays Bilbo Baggins, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett and Elijah Wood also signed autographs.
Ian McKellen, who plays the wizard Gandalf, was absent but sent the message: "I wish I were there in my spiritual home in Wellington."
Also on the carpet was J.R.R. Tolkien's great-grandson, Royd Tolkien.
Director Jackson, at a news conference hours before the premiere, said he hopes the new technology he used on his 'Hobbit' film trilogy will create a magical experience that will get people into theatres.
He said the films were shot at 48 frames per second instead of the traditional 24 to give them greater clarity.

Pointy ears and wizard hats line red carpet in 'Middle of Middle Earth' to see stars of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
New Zealand's capital city has been taken over by costumed Hobbit fans, many of whom camped overnight to grab the best spots by the red carpet for the film's world premiere on Wednesday.
Wellington, where director Peter Jackson and much of the post-production is based, has renamed itself "the Middle of Middle Earth", and fans with pointy ears, medieval-style costumes, grey beards, wigs and wizard hats claimed spaces along the 500-metre red carpet.
Tens of thousands are expected to pack the route to the theatre, along which the cast, crew, and celebrities will travel. "It's Tolkien so it's absolutely huge. It's one of the most adored books ever after Lord of the Rings, everyone's really excited," said Chelsea Thomson, a student.

Air New Zealand teamed up with Weta for a Hobbit-inspired safety video, and it's full of fun cameos — including appearances from director Peter Jackson (1:38), the great-grandson of author J.R.R. Tolkien, Royd Tolkien (0:30), and our own Hobbit countdown author Larry Curtis of TheOneRing.net fame (3:30). Dwarves, hobbits, elves and other creatures abound — including an appearance from Gollum. The video successfully makes air travel seem like a magical experience and not the hellish nightmare it can be. Please keep your seats in the upright position, and do not use the One Ring as a floatation device. There's a contest being held in conjunction with the promotion that allows people to unlock Elvish codes to win passes to the world premiere screening of The...

After flying a few times, it's likely you have stopped listening to the air stewards' safety talks. However, Air New Zealand has unveiled its new in-flight safety video, featuring the cast and crew from The Hobbit, and it is hard to tune this one out. The video sees hobbits, dwarves, elves and wizards listen to safety instructions as they take a flight to Middle-earth. The clever in-flight video takes passengers through the usual flight safety checks and features cameos by Gollum, Fili actor Dean O'Corman and J.R.R. Tolkien's great-grandsons Mike and Royd Tolkien. Even The Hobbit director Sir Peter Jackson makes an appearance. Air New Zealand (more)...

Talk about an unexpected start to your journey. If you didn't already know that Air New Zealand was the official airline of Middle-earth, then you certainly will after watching their cheeky, Hobbit-infused flight safety video released today, which features hobbits (of course), dwarves, elves, orcs, wizards and one or two particularly familiar faces. Peter Jackson cameo, anyone? The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey's director (and, incidentally, birthday boy!) sneaks his way into the entertaining spot in a rather, well, precious cameo, as does Gollum, Dean O'Gorman (aka Fili the Dwarf), and J.R.R. Tolkien's great-grandsons Mike and Royd Tolkien. Huh, if even the flight safety videos...

Lots of Hobbit characters got involved
Other familiar faces include Gollum, Fili the Dwarf (Dean O'Gorman), J.R.R. Tolkien's great-grandsons Mike and Royd Tolkien and even a cameo by 'Lord of The Rings' and 'The Hobbit' director Peter Jackson himself.
