About The Artistry
Journaling, writing poetry, writing lyrics or pulling lyrics from my journal entries & poetry was my comforter in life, when not singing or dancing. Fast-forward to 2020. I had a dream that this quarantine was going to last 3 years, on varying levels. With this divine download, I decided to rediscover all the things I loved to keep me entertained & creative during this time- started with online/zoom dance then I thought, "Hey, let me restart vocal lessons & writing." Now is the perfect time to explore my vocal abilities seriously within the genres I grew up loving & singing.
Patra & Aaron Hall, Patra & YoYo, Lady Saw & Estelle, all I could say back then & now is "Wow, you can mix genres!" I, like a true artist, do not want to have to pick one lane. I want to pay homage to all the music that makes me, well ...me. I lean towards R&B love songs, broken heart feelings or over sentimental "found the love of my life" & "I am so grateful & so in love," love songs.
The lover in me craves a daily dose of lovers' rock on Pandora Music's Romantic Reggae Radio station, which reminded me of the blend of traditional love songs with Reggae. It also reminded me of my dream to record one grand Reggae dub-plate or R&B song and have it placed at Radio. But the other side of me loves a dance track- traditional pop or rap; Reggae Dutty Whine, Soca Whine- Clean or Dutty, or Afrobeats, always with a hard baseline.
Vocal Training
During high school years I tinkered with my vocals with ASCAP award winner (and recently appointed to the Unclaimed Royalties Oversight Committee of MLC) Erika Nuri & her brother Oji Nuri (RIP). Although I don't think they would even remember me or how they helped me even when we were just hanging out & partying, they were instrumental in my exploring my creativity. They both learned music from their Music Executive father Erik Nuri and their Godfather Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. I can only hope I got some of what they learned was somehow transferred to me via osmosis when we hung out and had jam sessions with their friend "Do". I hope some of their music acumen was imbued onto me when we sang in fun or just played good music & danced at their NYC residence or while out at the clubs. I still remember them showing me a simple lesson in cadence by playing a record they made as children called "Come to Allah." #Priceless (give people their thank yous, accolades and flowers now people #Message!), then they moved back to Los Angeles. #Nooooo.
In 2018 I started Vocal Training with industry leaders, namely classically trained, Grammy nominated & Grammy Award winning Vocalist, Actress, Vocal Coach & Life Coach Chrisette Michele. The undivided time and attention this lady gives to her Rich Hipster University students is unmatched. I can't thank her enough for her guidance. (Again give people their thank yous, accolades and flowers now people #Message!)
I was also booked with reputable Classically Trained, R&B/Urban Vocal coaches- Stevie Mackey online video tutorials & Clurel Henderson via zoom. I had sessions booked with Jazz Vocalist Jeremiah Abiah to nurture that "Blue Note" side of my vocal range & the pandemic came & my sessions were canceled. I have, nonetheless, past novice experience with demo & background singing, as well as on-air commercial voiceover experience for The City College of New York radio- WHCR-FM (1991-1997).
Dancing
HS of Telecommunications Arts & Technology Dance Club, The City College of New York Dance Repertoire Company at Aaron Davis Hall; Dance performances with African History & African Dance Professor, Actress extraordinaire, singer, poet, activist & author, the incomparable Camille Yarbrough; as well as impromptu community dance classes literally kept me on my toes & loving every minute of it. Music Video dance talent resume included and major film (non-SAG/AFTRA) dance/ club scenes/choreographed BG talent included, trained me to love every inch of my soul's vessel. The cast of "In Living Color" was the 1 that got away (Rosie Perez said I can dance my ass off but I was too young, even though I had a cousin in LA at the time who was willing to house me and encourage my endeavors.)
Acting
I am experienced as an actor in a traveling High School improvisational acting troupe "Faces", sponsor by the Board of Education, geared towards minimizing social anxiety and peer pressure, including bullying and violence, in New York City High Schools. Minor in Dance Choreography and Acting at College level, including small bit parts in dramatic and comedic independent films and shorts. I was an background Extra & Dance Talent in Halle Berry's debut film "Strictly Business." (non-SAG/AFTRA payroll); and I also had a short tenure as a Daytime Emmy Awards screening assistant & Abrams Artists NYC (now called A3A) talent management office assistant. In 2024 I was given the opportunity and casted & booked as a Journalist on Netflix's new series Zero Day, starring Angela Basset, Robert Dinero & Jesse Plemons. This is the range of my acting experience/ history, and am open to much more.

The Alter-ego / The Creator
Simply Missy, who has Afro-Caribbean Diaspora ties to Trinidad & Tobago as well as St. Vincent, Nigeria & Mali, is one her way to making a mark in music with the intent to attempt every genre; including making the point that "..the Music is in all of us and we all have a perspective to share"-Simply Missy 2018.
Born in Brooklyn; toddler years in Trinidad; raised by a single mom in Brooklyn & self-nurtured as an adult in Queens NY, Simply Missy embraces all music and cultures introduced to her by her family, as well as those found on her own as an avid international traveler.
It's often crossed Simply Missy's mind that not many stories were passed on to her as a child about heritage, culture and music beyond her mother's adopted Countries and Culture of Trinidad & Tobago and St. Vincent & Grenadines, where Soca, steel pan & Parang music prevails.
As an adult Simply Missy was able to trace her maternal grandfather's roots to Nigeria and her maternal grandmother's roots to Mali. Although there is silence between the two time lines, Simply Missy is attempting to bridge the gap through the vibration and sounds of her music; and her sultry ASMR-adjacent voice.
Capitalizing on her family's Trinidadian roots and the love of Soca and Reggae music, Simply Missy, born Melissa Sharon Glasgow, (marital name Melissa Abdullah-Musa) compiled several singles and new material to release her debut EP Caribbean Foreigner in 2023, solidifying her spot in music. The Single "I Still Luv Sweet T & T" (prod. by Ackahdan) teases the senses with a blend of traditional calypso and soca. Listening to the single "Fete Too Much" with featured producer Trini Baby from Trinidad & Tobago alongside her blends Soca and Dance Hall music vibes for a pulsating dance track. Chipping & Gripping takes the Carnival Dance/Fete vibes up a notch to a whole new level. Simply Missy's incorporation of a sound bite from a viral Caribbean social media influencer Kevon "Yank Nation" Ottley (RIP) "Miss Grippy" with her sultry voice and a road march music track by Kyle Michael Philips PKA Bad John Republic/ Bad John R, both natives of Trinidad & Tobago, sent shock waves through Trinidad Carnival 2024.
