- In the late 1960s, he went to Houston, where he played folk music on a club circuit that included contemporaries Van Zandt and Eric Taylor as well as blues legends Lightnin' Hopkins and Mance Lipscomb. He spent time in San Francisco and Los Angeles which inspired his songs "Madonna w/ Child ca. 1969" and "L.A. Freeway," before moving to Nashville in 1971.
- He was a singer-songwriter who was a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. His songs were recorded by top country and folk artists, including Johnny Cash, Ricky Skaggs, Emmylou Harris, Vince Gill, Alan Jackson, George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. He and his wife, Susanna, were leaders in the roots music scene that included artists like Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Mickey Newbury, and Billy Joe Shaver.
- His wife Susanna and he were also painters. She painted the portraits on the covers of his "Old No. 1" album, Harris' "Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town," Willie Nelson's "Stardust" and other works, while his self-portrait was the cover of his own, Grammy-nominated "Old Friends" album.
