Author Dan Gutman didn’t expect to wake up this morning and see a book he wrote 20 years ago fly up the Amazon charts.
But thanks to a segment on Sunday night’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” Gutman’s 1996 children’s novel “The Kid Who Ran for President” suddenly has a renewed life.
Prior to Oliver’s segment, Gutman said the book usually hovered between Nos. 15,000 and 30,000 on Amazon’s ranker of all books on sale. But as of Monday morning, “The Kid Who Ran for President” had already skyrocketed to No. 198 148 128 110.
“That’s the highest any of my books have ever been in my 30-year career,” said Gutman, who has written tons of books over his successful career, including the popular kids’ series “My Weird School” and “The Genius Files.”

Dan Gutman.s The Genius Files is the latest hit teen-lit series that will be making the leap from the page to the screen as Hollywood continues to scratch the itch triggered by the financial successes of The Twilight Saga and The Hunger Games. Part Spy Kids, part James Bond, the books revolve around Coke and Pepsi McDonald, 12-year-old twins who are part of an extremely secret government program that relies on young masterminds to help solve world-threatening problems. THR reports that up-and-coming commercial director Robert Rugan has just been hired by Warner Bros. to bang out the screenplay for the first installment of Genius Files on screen, with an eye toward handing the script off to someone else to direct. The first Genius Files book came out in January 2011. One more followed and a third is due in 2013, meaning Warner has material to create a franchise if audiences respond...

Warner Bros. is adapting the popular children’s book series The Genius Files (written by Dan Gutman) into a possible big-budget franchise. They’ve hired commercial director Robert Rugan to write the screenplay, although currently there’s no plans for him to direct the project should it get the greenlight.
THR describes the plot:
“[The Genius Files] revolves around 12-year-old twins who are recruited to be part of a secret government experiment that uses young geniuses to solve complex national problems. The pair must fight for their lives while on a road trip with their family.”
They solve complex national problems? Like the fiscal cliff and gun control? Cool! Er, what’s that?…. ohhh, you mean they’re like Spy Kids, fighting Alan Cumming and stop-motion monsters? That’s cool too, I guess.

Children's literature looks to be the new big thing.
FilmNation Entertainment and Kamala Films have acquired the film rights to Adam Gidwitz's popular children’s book "A Tale Dark & Grim" and plan to adapt it into a live action family feature.
Inspired by some of Grimm's most gruesome tales, the story follows the adventures of two unsuspecting children who hold the key to breaking out of the dark ages.
Aaron Ryder, Marissa McMahon and Karen Lunder will produce. Jon Gunn and John W. Mann will adapt the screenplay.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Pictures have optioned the film rights to Dan Gutman's "Spy Kids"-esque best-selling children's book series "The Genius Files" says Variety.
The books follow two pre-adolescent brothers (Coke and Pepsi McDonald) who get into a series of adventures in the name of national security, all while keeping their activities a secret from their parents.

James Patterson‘s Hollywood stock is on the rise. It’d be evident enough if we only had this fall’s Alex Cross — yes, it looks bad, but it still exists — though, now, THR tell us Maven Pictures are making plans to adapt his novel, Guilty Wives, with Paul Harris Boardman (Devil’s Knot, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) being given the reigns to work out a screenplay.
Wives sounds like your typical Patterson material, being the story of “four married women [who] take off to Monte Carlo for a weekend of vacation and excess.” They have a bit of an orgy and are said to engage in “carousing,” but awaken to find that two men are dead. Being, naturally, arrested for such a problem, these four women need to prove they’re… not-so-guilty wives.
With any luck, Boardman won’t put those kinds of puns into his screenplay. It’s...

School is back in session for kids across the country, many of whose first loathsome assignment will be to pen an essay about "How I Spent My Summer Vacation." (Is there anything crueler than making kids recount the joys of summer from inside a classroom?) For most, this assignment will be uninspired, but the twins at the center of Dan Gutman's kids' book The Genius Files have plenty of wild tales to share. In the first book of a slated six book series, this brother and sister team take on a revenge-bent gym teacher and two mysterious men in bowler hats who track them as they road trip with their parents cross-country in the family Rv. While they fight for their lives and deal in secrets of national security, they are sure to keep their exploits secret from their parents, obviously. With insane antics that include getting trapped in...
