Those who run the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences might want to keep an eye—just one eye, not two, but a sharp one nonetheless—on the Supreme Court of the United States, as the court deliberates the future of affirmative action in college admissions.
The court, as has been widely noted, will hear oral argument in two parallel cases—one against the private Harvard University, the other against the public University of North Carolina—on Oct. 31. It is then expected to rule sometime next year.
What Scotus decides about academic affirmative action would seem to have little direct legal bearing on the film Academy and the race-, gender- and disability-based inclusion standards it is poised to impose on the Oscar Best Picture race beginning with the 2024 ceremony. After all, educational institutions are governed by a wide range of specific state and federal laws and court precedents, and the movies,...

Catholic League president Bill Donohue issued a statement in which he aligns with recent comments made by Woody Allen in the wake of several allegations of sexual misconduct that have been waged against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. “Jeffrey Katzenberg is right to observe that ‘There’s a pack of wolves’ in Hollywood. They must be gotten. But in the quest for justice, it is important not to proceed at a gallop pace lest we victimize the innocent,” Donohue said in a statement on behalf of the Catholic League, which is a self-described anti-defamation and civil rights organization. “Perhaps the messenger is.

Recently, the AMC TV show Preacher caused something of a scandal with one of its scenes. To be exact, said scene was a sex scene with Jesus as one of the two participants, though this is not made clear until sometime into it. Regardless, there are a fair number of people who are less than enthused about the whole business, with an excellent example being Bill Donohue of the Catholic League, who tends to get worked up about this sort of thing. Why Some People Should Have Seen the Preacher Scandal Coming With that said, people who are familiar with

Netflix’s new film about atheist activist Madalyn Murray O’Hair is called “The Most Hated Woman in America” — which might sound like an exaggeration. Until you read the kind of responses she still elicits, 21 years after she was murdered. Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, continues to not like O’Hair, as a statement he released on Monday makes plain. Sounding a little like Dana Carvey’s Church Lady, but less forgiving, he refers to O’Hair as “maniacal,” “pathological,” and “not too bright.” Donahue, who issues a great many statements about things he perceives as offensive to Catholicism,...

“Don Jon,” Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s raunchy/redemption comedy -- and the actor’s debut as a feature director – has a lot going for it, including Gordon-Levitt’s performance, and that of Tony Danza, and the fact that the film may finally have provided Scarlett Johansson the role she was born to play. It’s intentionally vulgar. It may not have been intentionally sacrilegious. Nevertheless, as Katharine Hepburn once put it: The so-called “Don” -- thus titled by his friend because he never fails to go home with some random babe at the Jersey bars where they all hang out – is devoutly Catholic, at least in his own peculiar way, attending mass regularly with his parents (Danza, and a terrific Glenne Headly) and feeling some predictably Catholic guilt both for his extramarital shenanigans, and the fact that he’s a porn addict. “There is no shortage of young men who are stuck in adolescence,...

Stephen Fry appeals Olympic venue, Catholics aren’t hateful to gays, Cheyenne Jackson’s Opening Night
Cheyenne Jackson and Anthony Rapp have signed on for Opening Night, a movie about the disasters, both onstage and behind the scenes of a student drama, their teacher, and a visiting B-list TV star.

On Thursday morning, February 28, I found CNN featuring a continuous shot of a helicopter. The network cut between a close-up and a distant dot. It was Benedict, flying from the Vatican City. This was extraordinary attention for an ordinary cardinal, because as Benedict told the throng awaiting him, "I am no longer Pope." I am not a scholar of Catholic history, but I believe we were witnessing the first time the Papal throne was vacant while an elected Pope was alive.
"This no one can deny," wise Sister Rosanne told us during the 8 am theology class that began every day at St. Mary's Grade School. "The Church is the oldest continuously functioning institution in human history, and the Popes go back in an unbroken chain to St. Peter's blessing at the hand of Jesus." That was one reason people of all faiths or none desired an audience with the Pope.

The Catholic League is mad as hell and they aren't going to take it anymore. Bill Maher, host of HBO's "Real Time", has apparently made one too many jabs at the expense of Catholics, particularly priests, and the League has decided it's time for it to stop. In a letter to Glenn A. Britt, Chairman and CEO of Time Warner (HBO's parent company), Bill Donohue of the Catholic League demands that someone have "a serious talk" with Maher.
Donohue's letter reads in part:
There is no other entertainer in the nation who has repeatedly spoken about the Catholic Church, especially its priests, in more vile and obscene terms than Bill Maher. Vicious beyond belief, his remarks would be condemned – indeed he would be fired – if directed at any other demographic group. Over and over again he libels [sic] priests, portraying all of them as sexual abusers. And he does so with impunity.

People involved with the film say no. “Orson's politics are not reflective of the moviemakers. We’re adapting a work, not a person. A painting featuring President Barack Obama in a Christ-like pose is getting poor reviews from some religious authorities, Fox News Radio reports.
The painting by New York-based artist by Michael D’Antuono is titled "The Truth" and features Obama with a crown of thorns on his head, in a position that is reminiscent of the crucifixion.
Currently on display at Boston's Bunker Hill Community College Art Gallery as part of D'Antuono's politically charged “Artists on the Stump – the Road to the White House 2012" collection, the piece was actually supposed to debut several years ago at New York City’s Union Square.
The painting was "meant to be displayed as an art installation in New York's Union Square Park on President Obama's 100th day in office," according to D’Antuono's website. "The painting was to be in a mock voting booth for people to view privately and then interviewed to express their own views.
