No, this isn’t a documentary about the sorry situation faced by too many American homeowners. Howard Hughes takes Rko into SuperScope and color for this attractive, somewhat tame sunken treasure adventure starring his captive glamour star Jane Russell. No off-color advertising slogans this time around, but the show shapes up as a swimsuit catalog for Jane as well as her handsome co-stars Richard Egan and Gilbert Roland. Plus, the Latin rhythms of the incomparable Pérez Prado!

“For an intellectual product of any value to exert an immediate influence which shall also be deep and lasting, it must rest on an inner harmony, yes, an affinity, between the personal destiny of its author and that of his contemporaries in general.”—Thomas Mann, Death in Venice Barry Lyndon. I can’t believe there was a time when I didn’t know that name. Barry Lyndon means an artwork both grand and glum. Sadness inconsolable. A cello bends out a lurid sound, staining the air before a piano droopingly follows in the third movement of Vivaldi's “Cello Concerto in E Minor.” This piece, which dominates the second half of the film, steers the hallowed half of my head to bask in the film’s high melancholic temperature. Why should I so often remember it? What did I have to do with this film? I only received it with...

Filmed in 1959 but not released until Aip picked it up in ’62, The Brain That Wouldn’t Die is a weird little treasure that deserved to be saved from the wreckage. It surpasses all yardsticks of measurement such as taste or talent, and instead floats to the surface on sheer strangeness and a stringent commitment to sleaze. Man cannot live on refinement alone.
Released in May after Aip purchased it and thrown to the wolves on a double feature with Invasion of the Star Creatures, The Brain That Wouldn’t Die (Aka The Head That Wouldn’t Die) came and went like the patrons at a Dusk to Dawn bill by the local drive-in. Mass production on the public domain line ensured faded memories and dimmed shocks until Mystery Science Theater 3000 gave it new life. Regardless of how you’ve come to it, Brain still retains the title of best...

The woman profiled Thursday on CNN who claimed she was the recipient of an unwanted kiss courtesy of Donald Trump is a songwriter who penned and sang a tune that was squarely racist. Jennifer Murphy posted a video last April in which she sang about being a "neenja" in an characteur-like Asian accent. Jen ended up apologizing after a torrent of criticism was directed her way, saying, "It is obvious that I had bad judgment...

With the holidays finally upon us, the home entertainment releases are starting to slow down a bit. Thankfully, the good folks at Scream Factory have us genre fans’ backs though, as they’ve got two great Blu-rays coming out this Tuesday to tide us over for a bit: The Brain That Wouldn’t Die and Nightmares (a film I loved as a kid).
Also arriving on Blu-ray and DVD this week are the box sets for Defiance: Season Three and Dominion: Season Two, as well as the fantasy actioner, Dragon Blade.
The Brain That Wouldn’t Die (Scream Factory, Blu-ray)
Strangely relevant in today's ethically challenged world, this movie presents a truly psycho surgery case and is "one of the great sci-fi sleaze classics" (Starlog).

Forget your 'Jan in the Pan' jokes and all those 'thing in the closet' remarks about gay subtext. This loopy, kooky and kinky horror offering from New York's Tarrytown is a keeper despite its primitive direction and campy screenplay. 40. Don’t Look Now (1973)
Directed by: Nicholas Roeg
A few films that could be defined as horror appear on this list, mostly because the best ones veer further into a psychological discussion on dealing with fear, death, and loss. Based on a short story by Daphne du Maurier, “Don’t Look Now” is a landmark of British-Italian cinema, thanks to its wonderfully developed characters and realistic depiction of grief. John and Laura Baxter (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie) travel to Venice, still reeling after the accidental drowning of their daughter Christine. While there, Laura meets a psychic who claims that Christine is still trying to contact them, which she shares with John, who is skeptical. Slowly, John begins to experience supernatural moments and mysterious sightings, some of which appear to be a young girl in a red coat, similar to the one Christine was wearing when she died. There are few auteurs as instantly recognizable and divisive as Stanley Kubrick, few filmmakers as idiosyncratic or groundbreaking. His work spans the entirety of life itself–sometimes in the same film–and has inspired almost as much derision as hosannas. There is no easy consensus on Kubrick’s films–though you may not be terribly surprised by our writers’ choice for his best, it’s hard to imagine that your ranking of his work will line up wholly with ours–nor on the messages imparted within. Is The Shining secretly about the moon landing? Is 2001? What is he really saying about violence in society in A Clockwork Orange? And so on. Closing out (some weeks late, granted) our monthly theme on his works, here is Sound on Sight’s ranking of the films of Stanley Kubrick. Enjoy. Share. Debate. We know you’ll want to debate.

It’s both perfectly fitting and a darkly wry punchline that the last word in Stanley Kubrick’s last film is “fuck,” utilized in its most literal definition. The word is spoken, in both direct and slightly imploring fashion, by Alice Harford (Nicole Kidman) to her husband Bill (Tom Cruise) at the end of the still slightly underappreciated Eyes Wide Shut. Bill’s nocturnal journey into an unfamiliar world of group sex and general deviancy is one of missed opportunities and denied possibilities; he is surrounded by and beckoned into various couplings, and capitalizes on none of them. This weakness of the modern man is a recurrent theme in Kubrick’s filmography, from Paths of Glory to Eyes Wide Shut, released posthumously in the summer of 1999. Kubrick, who died 15 years ago today, was often categorized as a cold and distant filmmaker, always putting his characters at an emotional remove; this...

Fans of rock-metal-folk-comedy duo Tenacious D rejoice, for the D's newest work is almost here. The band's new album "Rize Of The Fenix" drops on May 15th, and in anticipation of the event, they released a promo video on "Rolling Stone" starring Bob Odenkirk.

Talk about a wild freshman year.
Mississippi State freshman cheerleader, Taylor Corley, has come under fire as nude photos of the co-ed surfaced in November via Playboy. Corley reportedly posed under the name "Taylor Stone" before enrolling at the school, and by the time her modeling past came to anyone's attention she was already a sideline fixture, cheering on the Msu Bulldogs.
There was speculation as to whether Corley would be removed from the cheer squad, or from the school entirely, but that doesn't look likely.
According to SportsbyBrooks, Corley did sign an agreement stating that she would not conduct herself in a manner unbecoming of an official representative of the school. She has not broken contract, as the photos were taken prior to signing said agreement.
Vice President of student affairs, Dr. Bill Kibler, has issued a statement regarding the controversy:

Jessica Simpson's dentist, Dr. Bill Dorfman, famous for creating Hollywood celebrities' pearly white smiles, often through the use of porcelain veneers, is not happy about his patient's admitted poor brushing habits. Jess has publicly confessed that she only brushes once or twice a week, often using the sleeve of her sweater.
Apparently, Jess hasn't heard about a little thing called periodontal (gum) disease, the leading cause of tooth loss, which can also lead to heart disease.
We have no idea if Dorfman (of Century City Aesthetic Dentristry) put porcelain veneers on Jess but it's possible. He's like the Veneer King of Hollywood. And those things are not cheap. Veneers can cost from $1,200 to $1,800. Per tooth!! So if you're talking a front mouthful (16-18 teeth, upper and lower), you're talking a major chunka change.
"I was kind of shocked. I assumed everybody brushed their teeth all the time," Dorfman tells People.

Jessica Simpson’s pearly-white smile just got a little tainted. Last week, while appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the singer revealed that she brushes her teeth only about three times a week. "My teeth are so white and I don't like them to feel too slippery, but I do use Listerine and I do floss everyday," she told DeGeneres. "But I don’t brush them everyday. I’ll use a shirt or something ... I know it's gross, but I always have fresh breath." Related: Jessica Simpson: I Want to Be Michelle ObamaSimpson’s dentist, Dr. Bill Dorfman, who...
