Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock has been known to take as long as eight years between albums, but nearly three decades into his band’s career, he’s ready to pick up the pace. Three years after the release of the well-received The Golden Casket, he’s already recorded enough songs for a new Modest Mouse album with producers including Jacknife Lee and Dave Sardy, and intends to put one out by next spring. “In my early days of putting out records, I wrote music every fucking day,” he tells...

Les Amazones d’Afrique began in 2017 as a sisterly supergroup of singers from the West African region of Mali. Founded by Mamani Keïta, Mariam Doumbia (of Amadou and Mariam), and Oumou Sangare, and convened by French music-industry veteran Valerie Malot, the collective came together through a shared musical vision, as well as the goal of championing gender equality and bringing attention to the pressing issue of violence against women.

Lol Tolhurst, Budgie, and Jacknife Lee have shared their debut album as a trio, Los Angeles.
A post-punk supergroup of sorts, drummers Tolhurst (formerly of The Cure) and Budgie (formerly of Siouxsie and the Banshees) teamed up with producer Lee for the project, which also features a who’s-who list of collaborators including U2’s The Edge, LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock, Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, more.
And though the band admittedly “stole” some of the music on Los Angeles from their musical heroes and their own back catalogs, they made sure to nod to their punk descendants, too: “We asked Mark Bowen from Idles to put some guitar on [‘Uh Oh’] and what we got was sonic destruction design courtesy of the dentist,” Tolhurst says in a press release, while Budgie says the tune draws from The Banshees’ own “Happy House.”

Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock sings lead on “We Got to Move,” the latest single from Lol Tolhurst, Budgie, and Jacknife Lee’s upcoming collaborative album Los Angeles. Check it out below.
“We Got to Move” begins with a cacophony of strings and percussion before beginning in earnest as an über-sycnopated synth rock song. “It’s not a parade, it’s just another fine day/ Come on and pick up the pace/ We’re so glad that you stayed,” Brock sings, before repeating the track’s urgent title. In the music video, Tolhurst and Budgie — the iconic former drummers of The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees, respectively — bang on trash cans as guest star Fred Armisen, apparently the most connected musician-turned-comedian of all time, goes to town in a rage room.

Modest Mouse have released a music video from “We Are Between,” the lead single from their upcoming album The Golden Casket.
The surreal clip shows the band members trapped in various cars in a junkyard, along with other folks who seem to have fallen on hard times. Each car acts as a small window into someone’s life and how they may act when they feel like the end is near, and the video grimly ends with Isaac Brock getting crushed inside of his vehicle.

Modest Mouse have released a new song, “Leave a Light On,” from their upcoming album, The Golden Casket, out June 25th via Epic Records.
“Leave a Light On” finds frontman Isaac Brock grappling with the growing disconnect between people and the existential threat that poses to our humanity, per a release. The song feels woozy and borderline psychedelic at the edges, but it’s anchored by a big indie rock sing-along hook: “We’re leaving, we’re leaving, we’re leaving/We’ll be home soon.”

Two Door Cinema Club have debuted the second single from their upcoming new album, False Alarm, in the form of a kitschy, tongue-in-cheek music video. There are references to everything from Star Trek to Star Wars to Battlestar Galactica, with some hilarious dance moves interspersed throughout.

-- Taylor Swift, "Red" (Big Machine Records)
Taylor Swift's "Red," the Grammy winner's fourth album, is a 16-track set that has the singer continuing to step away from her country roots to take on a more rock and pop sound. The album features songs that are big and stadium ready (she has a U2-like moment on album opener, "State of Grace") and others that are soft and slow.
But while "Red" contains its share of winners, many of the songs lack the colorfulness and vitality the album title suggests, leading to an overall letdown. Lyrically and sonically, the album lacks oomph and feeling: It sounds like we've heard it all from her before (check "Starlight").
Hooking up with some new – and popular – producers seemed like a good move for Swift, who has worked with a supertight group of writers and producers on her first three albums (half of...

R.E.M.'s new album is being billed as their best in 20 years. Such a claim rarely holds up, but in the case of "Collapse into Now," Mills, Buck and Stipe are truly at their best. The album was recorded over 12 weeks at studios in New Orleans, Nashville and Berlin, with heavy doses of Cajun, fried chicken, and wurst, respectively.
"It's our way of introducing the album in a different light," Stipe said, when we asked him about the album and the videos we're premiering. "On par with 2011, we've used multiple technologies and distribution methods, and we present the idea of an album as a complete work. If you take it apart, they are pop songs, each complete, each with their own complete films. I wanted to present a 21st century idea of the album, and to work with people who would appreciate that challenge, and lend the project their voices.

Rem have confirmed that Patti Smith, Peaches and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder will feature on their upcoming 15th studio album. The band's Mike Mills told Spin that Smith and guitarist Lenny Kaye appear on one of the 12 tracks from the now-completed Collapse Into Now. Smith performed at an Rem tribute concert at Carnegie Hall last year. Vedder contributes vocals to another song, titled 'It Happened Today'. The album is due for release in early 2011. Comparing the Jacknife Lee-produced record to their last from 2008, Mills said: "With Accelerate (more)...

A couple days ago, R.E.M released two short videos filmed by a covert/hirsute Michael Stipe. Haphazardly focusing the camera on the occasional electric guitar or amplifier, Stipe meanders through the rooms where his band is recording its 15th studio record. According to Pop Candy, Grammy Award-winning Jacknife Lee is producing the new album, still in its early stages. Not many other details are known at the moment, but you can watch Stipe’s Blair Witchy cinematography below:...

Last week, AFI (that's "A Fire Inside" to newbies) came by the MTV Newsroom for an interview about their latest album Crash Love, their newest video "Medicate" and their current tour. In my career, I'm fairly certain that I've talked to the members of AFI (particularly singer Davey Havok) more than anybody else. In fact, I've interviewed Havok for every single outlet that has ever employed me. Luckily, I happen to be a huge fan of their records and Havok happens to be a tremendously quotable human being. He once told me a fantastic story about the worst summer job he had as a kid. He was paid to sort pears in a shed in the California sun for hours at a time, and it was horrible. In that same interview, we also talked about the uncomfortable groupies on the Warped Tour. Havok isn't afraid of any topics, and he...

You wouldn't exactly consider the guys in Weezer particularly "rad." It would appear, however, that they're trying very hard to change that.
On October 27, Weezer will release their seventh studio album, titled Raditude. The band revealed the title in a post on their official Web site less than a week after they announced the release date for the album and the name of its first single: "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To".
"I Want You To" wasn't supposed to hit radio stations until August 25, but it actually leaked on Monday, forcing a few overzealous outlets to begin playing it that night. According to Weezer.com, the song will now premiere on radio stations...

Weezer fans, rejoice. On October 27, the geek-rock gods will return with their seventh studio album, a yet-untitled affair that sees the band partying hard and getting parenthetical.
That's because, following in the grand grammatical style of classics like Meat Loaf's "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)", Weezer have announced that the first single from the album is called "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To," and it's shipping to radio August 25.
That's all according to a series of posts on Weezer.com, and the band promises that more information about the new album — title, track list, color, whether Rivers Cuomo will look like Bruno Kirby in...

Here is a story about Prince, one that has been repeated to me several times and one I am therefore assuming to be true: He has no concept of time. Or, more specifically, he does not believe in the constraints of it. If the Purple One has something on his schedule for, say, 2:30 p.m., it will probably happen sometime around 11 p.m., or whenever he declares himself ready. Or maybe it just won't happen at all. Time does not dictate Prince's routine, because he refuses to acknowledge its existence. This is amazing when you think about it.
Regina Spektor is most definitely not Prince. But she is on the same time-management system.
To wit: I have interviewed Spektor three times. On the first occasion, she was profoundly late...
