Brad Keselowski's face was puffy, and he took a couple quick drinks of water to wash the blood from his mouth. So close to a big playoff win, Jeff Gordon was left with a cut on his lip. The Chase for the Sprint Cup championship took another intense turn Sunday night when past champions Gordon and Keselowski were a part of a brawl after Jimmie Johnson won his third consecutive Texas fall race. Johnson emerged from a frantic finish in Fort Worth, the second attempt at an overtime two-lap sprint to the finish after his teammate Gordon spun out...

Newly crowned 2014 Daytona 500 champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. spoke exclusively to Uinterview about his hopes for the racing season.
Earnhardt spoke to Uinterview about his run in with Marcos Ambrose at the Sprint Unlimited earlier this February. Earnhardt and Ambrose were racing when Ambrose pushed Earnhardt into the fence, ending the race for both of them.
“We were just kind of going for the same place… I was out front and Marcus was pushing me down the front straight way, and I got to moving around probably a little too much in front of his car, searching for some air,” Earnhardt told Uinterview, “And he decided to start getting offensive on making some moves of his own and we were just miscommunicating with each other at that point in time and ran into each other.”
Earnhardt says he holds no grudges against Ambrose, regardless of how angry he may have seemed at the time.

Records, as they say, are made to be broken. Just ask Babe Ruth, Wilt Chamberlain or Gordie Howe.
Their career marks for home runs, points and goals, respectively, were so revered in their sports that they became major media events when they fell.
Another major sports record could be tied this year, the one for Sprint Cup championships in a career: seven, currently held by Richard Petty and the late Dale Earnhardt, and being pursued by Jimmie Johnson.
The 2014 season of Nascar's top series gets into gear Sunday, Feb. 23, at Daytona International Speedway, as Fox airs the 56th running of the Daytona 500. Johnson will begin his quest to tie the record -- as well as defend his 2013 race title -- on the 2.5-mile Florida tri-oval in a 43-car field that includes Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Denny Hamlin and Jeff Gordon. Update, 1 Pm: The unprecedented 36-hour rain delay for the Daytona 500 moved the marquee Nascar race from weekend afternoon to the competitive Monday night. That resulted in a ratings dent for the first primetime Daytona 500, which drew 13.7 million viewers. That’s down 8% from last year’s race, which aired on Sunday afternoon, but up 4% from the 2010 event, which also had delays. From 8-11 Pm, the Daytona 500 posted a 4.6 rating in 18-49 and 14.1 million viewers to win the night for Fox with the network’s largest audience in 16 months. Additionally, NBC’s new drama Smash was adjusted down in the finals to a 2.3/6, so it is now even with last week. Previous, 9 Am: Because of a 36-hour rain delay, the Daytona 500 made its primetime debut last night and sucked out male viewers from the competition. The marquee Nascar race pushed CBS’ lineup and NBC’s The Voice down, while female-skewing series like...

The Daytona 500 ran Monday night (Feb. 27) after being rescheduled twice due to heavy rains on Sunday. This 54th running of the race was peppered with bizarre occurrences on the way to Matt Kenseth taking the checkered flag, edging out Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s last-lap effort.
On the way to the victory, the race lasted almost six hours (the longest Daytona ever) and featured several crashes. On lap 2, Jimmie Johnson spun out and took David Ragan, Danica Patrick, Trevor Bayne and Kurt Busch with him.
Then during a caution flag around lap 160, Juan Pablo Montoya lost control and hit an equipment truck with a jet-powered dryer. The ensuing inferno lasted nearly 10 minutes and the repairs took nearly two hours.
And then welcome to the post-modern age, Nascar. During all of this, driver Brad Keselowski was tweeting from his racecar:
Fire! My view http://pic.twitter.com/RWn3xMn6No worries We stopped @LisShoe: @keselowski please!

The birth of narrative
You hear the word "narrative" a lot these days. Election narrative, party narrative, political narrative. Narrative Medicine, Narrative Law, Narrative Psychology. The list goes on--just Google it.
Then there's the Corporate Narrative, a Mississippi River of company narratives. It used to be called marketing, but these days we, the people with the dollar to spend, have gotten cranky about being treated like cattle. Now we're looking for personal relationships--dialogue, shared experience, a bedtime story. We want Match.com, only with brands.
Actually, just about nothing is as old as the narrative--we've been telling stories since we could sit round a fire. But if you believe Joseph Campbell, it's always the same plot. In his 1949 book The Hero with a Thousand Faces, the screenwriter's bible, he says that stories from all over the world, down the ages, have stuck to a single basic theme, The Hero's Journey.

New York -- Sunday's Daytona 500 ratings were lower than last year's race, and Fox Sports blamed it on the rain.
The telecast Sunday afternoon and early evening averaged 16 million viewers, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday. That's down from last year's 17.8 million.
Viewership increases in the final laps but that wasn't the case this time. The Daytona 500 was called because of rain with 48 laps remaining; Matt Kenseth won the 152-lap race after a steady rain, a caution flag and a 16-minute delay.
The race averaged a 9.2/19 in Nielsen's preliminary estimates. That's down from last year's 10.2/20 and the lowest since 2000, which averaged an 8.4/22. In the past nine years, only one other race was cut short by rain. In 2003, the race averaged a 9.3/21 and 16.8 million viewers.
Even with the lower numbers, the Daytona 500 rates higher than the Indianapolis 500, which averaged 7.2 million viewers last year.
