"We need to talk about Florence..." An early promo trailer has debuted for an indie drama titled Good Side of Bad, the latest film from filmmaker Alethea Root. This recently premiered at the 2023 Dances with Film Festival this month, hence the trailer landing now to build up the hype. When a young photographer has a severe mental break, her siblings come together to help her heal. Lexi Simonsen stars as Florence, who returns home to her family to try to reconnect with them despite their struggles with mental illness. The film is adapted from the book of the same name written by Beverly Olevin. "With insight and empathy, Olevin explores the mysterious world of mental illness... and the tangled ties of family." Also starring Jules Bruff, Alex Quijano, Tess Harper, Kim Estes, and Myles Grier. This looks like yet another powerfully honest story about how challenging it is to deal with mental illness,...

The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 48 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12; last year, only 41 TV movies were submitted.
All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 27 to cast their 2022 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. In 2017, that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. And, as opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

"My professor is missing..." Integrity is opening this B-movie direct-to-vod next week if you want to watch it - Final Frequency, directed by the filmmaker Tom Lowry. A PhD student ties unusual tremors to rogue scientists, who will weaponize Nikola Tesla's secrets and cause massive earthquakes, if they can only find his lost notebook. The sci-fi thriller indie film follows a band of misfits as they work to thwart rogue scientists who are using Tesla's most secret formulas to create the "Mother of all Earthquakes" and collapse downtown Los Angeles during the G-20 World Summit. Described as a "fast-paced and fun adventure inspired by the legend of Nikola Tesla's lost journals." This looks as terrible as it sounds, but that's exactly what makes it an entertaining B-movie. I guess...? The film stars Kirby Bliss Blanton, Lou Ferrigno Jr., Richard Burgi, Charles Shaughnessy, Kim Estes, and Nicolas Alexandre. Try to...

Michael K. Williams is the odds-on favorite to win the Best Drama Supporting Actor Emmy for “Lovecraft Country,” leading with 9/2 odds. If he does, it’d be a historic moment because no Black performer has won that category yet. Not only that but Best Drama Supporting Actor is the only acting category remaining that has never anointed a Black winner.
Even the short form acting categories, which were added in 2016, have crowned Black champs — Kim Estes (“Dicks”) and Laurence Fishburne (“#FreeRayshawn”) won actor in 2017 and 2020, respectively, and Jasmine Cephas Jones (“#FreeRayshawn”) nabbed actress last year. Best Drama Supporting Actor has existed since the Emmys established genre-specific acting categories in 1970. It became the sole acting category not to have a Black champ following Viola Davis‘ Best Drama Actress victory for “How to Get Away with Murder” in 2015.

The Best Drama Supporting Actor Emmy category as we know it was established 50 years ago and in that time, it has never seen a black winner — the only remaining long-running category without one. And that unfortunate drought looks like it’ll continue this year if our odds prove to be correct.
Our predicted six nominees are Jonathan Banks (“Better Call Saul”), Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”), Kieran Culkin (“Succession”), Bradley Whitford (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), David Harbour (“Stranger Things”) and Tom Pelphrey (“Ozark”). Banks’ co-star Giancarlo Esposito, who was nominated last year, is the first black predicted nominee in ninth place, behind also Matthew Macfayden (“Succession”) and Josh O’Connor (“The Crown”). Wendell Pierce (“Jack Ryan”) is next in 11th, trailing Mandy Patinkin (“Homeland”) in 10th.
Esposito is one of 11 black performers who’ve reaped 18 drama supporting actor nominations between them since the Emmys established genre-specific acting categories in 1970. He was first nominated in 2012 for “Breaking Bad,...

Jonathan Banks might finally win an Emmy for playing Mike Ehrmantraut — but in a category not many of us expected: Best Short Form Comedy or Drama Series Actor.

The show (watch above) features Mike offering tips and sharing his wisdom to new Madrigal employees. “Madrigal” is the second season, if you will, of “Saul”‘s online training series; the first, “Los Pollos Hermanos Employee Training,” which starred Giancarlo Esposito‘s Gus Fring and aired alongside Season 3, won Best Short Form Comedy or Drama Series in 2017.
