Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa was at one point set to be part of the new trinity of the MCU, along with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. However, a slew of things, including Boseman’s tragic passing, made it impossible for these plans to come to fruition in the MCU.
There was a lot of reluctance when it came to recasting T’Challa in the MCU, however, it seems that that attitude has changed a bit in the following years. From the introduction of T’Challa’s son, T’Challa II, to the multiverse being thrown wide open in the upcoming MCU films, the possibilities are endless for the character to return.

Ryan Coogler remembers Chadwick Boseman had Disney executives a little worried because he stayed in character while filming “Black Panther.”
While on “The Breakfast Club” to promote his upcoming movie “Sinners,” Coogler explained that during production “Black panther,” Boseman maintained the African accent he used in the film while speaking to a small group of Disney executives who visited the set.
“[Chad] pulled up and [he was talking in] T’Challa’s accent, and they was freaked out,” Coogler said. “I was like, ‘Don’t be freaked out. He’s working, man. He don’t turn it off till we wrap.’ And no shame or embarrassment in that — that’s how he was moving.”
The director also recalled how working with Boseman on the 2018 Marvel film – which would go on to be the first superhero movie nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards – altered his life.

Ryan Coogler is remembering how “freaked out” Disney executives were by Chadwick Boseman’s African accent on the set of “Black Panther.” While promoting his latest feature “Sinners,” Coogler told the hosts of “The Breakfast Club” (via People) that Boseman’s dedicated interpretation of the superhero was initially daunting to Marvel leadership.
“He was talking in an African accent,” Coogler said. “Disney execs came to see us on ‘Panther.’ It was week two and they pulled up and it was the [character] T’Challa accent and they were freaked out. I was like, ‘Don’t be freaked out. He’s working, man. He don’t turn it off until we wrap.’”
Boseman later died in August 2020 at 43 years old from colon cancer. Coogler recalled how Boseman’s “Black Panther” co-star Michael B. Jordan mourned the actor; Jordan played villain Erik Killmonger in “Black Panther,” and has worked with Coogler for years across “Fruitvale Station,...

Chadwick Boseman wasn’t one to just play the role — he lived it. Be it Jackie Robinson’s unshakable grace in 42 or the electric swagger of James Brown in Get On Up, every character Chadwick Boseman donned came to life with a type of intensity that was impossible to fake.
From directors, to co-stars, and even studio heads — everyone knew what to expect. Or at least, they thought they did.

Then, in 2018, came Black Panther, Boseman’s magnum opus. Everyone’s jaw dropped at the regal presence of King T’Challa, right? Well, director Ryan Coogler would tell you that Boseman’s commitment to his part was so immersive that it terrified the top brass at Disney.

Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman was a generational talent, and we lost him too soon (the actor passed away in 2020 at 43 years old following a battle with colon cancer). While his work stretched beyond the MCU, it's T'Challa he's likely to be best remembered for playing.
Talking about his new movie, Sinners, director Ryan Coogler has addressed the Avengers: Infinity War star's commitment to his craft.
He started by explaining what a huge impact Boseman's death had on both himself and the actor's Black Panther co-star and Sinners lead, Michael B. Jordan.
"Out of all of my actors, Chad’s death actually hit [Michael B. Jordan] the hardest," Coogler recalls in the video below. "Chad was older than us, he was quite a bit older than us, even though he looked like he was the same age. He was a fully baked man from the South. He was an old school man’s...

Much has been said about The Batman Part II's continued delays. As we're sure you're aware, social media scoopers and DC fan accounts alike have spent months hinting that work has been pushed back due to personal issues in filmmaker Matt Reeves' life.
Hinting at some sort of health issue in an attempt to calm down fans frustrated with the delays seems in poor taste, and in many ways, it would surely be better to say nothing at all.
That hasn't stopped Grace Randolph from weighing in with this in a recent video: "If you knew what Matt Reeves was dealing with, you'd leave him alone. I mean, it's not a Chadwick Boseman situation, but it's close. You should leave Matt Reeves alone."
Regardless of whether it's Reeves or someone close to him who's allegedly unwell, the filmmaker does deserve some space and shouldn't be harrassed by fans eager...

Ryan Coogler is looking back at how seriously the late Chadwick Boseman took his work as an actor.
The Black Panther director, who recently helmed Sinners starring Michael B. Jordan, made a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, where he was asked, “What did Chadwick Boseman bring out of you that Michael B. Jordan doesn’t?”
“Out of all of my actors, Chad’s death actually hit Mike the hardest,” Coogler responded. “Chad was older than us, he was quite a bit older than us, even though he looked like he was the same age. Hollywood has had a lot of wholesome moments shared between its top-notch celebrities, and Denzel Washington has been a part of more than one of such moments. While the actor has given some really memorable performances, he is even more famous for all the good deeds he has done, which even includes the likes of paying a Black Panther star’s tuition fees for Oxford.
As surprising as it may seem, it was none other than Washington himself who decided to take on the responsibility of paying off the fees of the late fan-beloved Chadwick Boseman. But while that is stunning indeed, that’s not all, because now the actor is working on an MCU film with the very director who helped Boseman become the massive name that he is, even after his death.

Marvel Studios recently announced the cast of Avengers: Doomsday by unveiling their on-set chairs with their names printed on the back. None of the actors listed will be making their debut in Avengers: Doomsday. In fact, the only character that is not scheduled to attend any project prior to Doomsday is Doctor Doom himself, played by the original Marvel Cinematic Universe star, Robert Downey Jr.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is still ahead of us, so it is possible Downey Jr. may emerge before Doomsday comes out. All of the other named actors are playing heroes, anti-heroes, or at the very least, a redeemed adversary. Gone, but not forgotten.
Linda Lavin died Dec. 29, 2024, due to complications from lung cancer. At the time of her death, the beloved 87-year-old actress had filmed seven of 10 episodes of Mid-Century Modern, Hulu's new comedy starring Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer, and Nathan Lee Graham as gay best friends who decide to live together in Palm Springs.
Lavin's role of Sybil Schneiderman, the mother of Bunny (Lane), has been receiving Emmy buzz following the sitcom's premiere on March 28. She currently ranks among the top 10 for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, according to the Gold Derby odds. To date, only 11 actresses have received posthumous Emmy nominations, so Lavin would be in rare company, indeed.
Here's a clip of one of Lavin's final scenes from Mid-Century Modern. Sybil's spicy side is in full display as she yells at a stranger on the phone who's trying to con her, with Lavin delivering perfect comedic timing.

Denzel Washington may become the latest A-list actor to join the beloved Black Panther franchise, as he's long been rumored to star in Black Panther 3. However, while he awaits a potential role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe threequel, he recalls how he "cried a little bit" when watching the original and can still feel the impact its late star, Chadwick Boseman, left behind.
Washington was featured in the newly released Apple TV+ documentary, Number One on the Call Sheet, which examines Black actors' historical contributions and influence on the film industry. One actor chronicled in the documentary was Boseman, with Washington recalling his emotions when watching Black Panther for the first time. The Academy Award-winning film left him in awe, feeling "the baton had been passed" as he shared his thoughts with Boseman and director Ryan Coogler.

It's hard to believe that it's been almost five years since the world lost the incredibly talented Chadwick Boseman, but the Howard alum is still serving as a beacon of inspiration as evidenced by the way some of Hollywood's elite touch on his legacy in the Apple TV+ documentary, Number One on the Call Sheet.
One of the actors who reflected on Chadwick's passing was Michael B. Jordan, who co-starred alongside Boseman in Black Panther.
Said Jordan, "It's something I think about often, you know. Not checking up as much as I should. It's something that weighs on me also. I'm not trying to turn this into a therapy session, but Chadwick is special. I was looking forward to, like, you know..."
Jordan then takes some time to gather himself as it's evident that Boseman's death is still a fresh wound.

Chadwick Boseman's impact can be felt tremendously, even almost five years after his passing. Michael B. Jordan worked alongside the Academy Award nominee in Black Panther (2018), and their bond grew beyond their work. That's why it was difficult for the Sinners actor to talk about his friendship with Boseman and his death without getting emotional. In the Apple TV+ documentary, Number One on the Call Sheet, Jordan discussed the Golden Globe Award winner's influence. The two-part episode premieres on March 28, and the first is titled "Leading Black Men in Hollywood." In it, Michael B. Jordan touches upon what he could've done differently in their friendship.
According to People Magazine, Jordan said he wishes he would've checked up on Boseman more, and it's something that he thinks about often. Boseman was the true definition of a hero. He supported charities, advocated for change, and never did so for 'brownie points.

Late last year, Denzel Washington revealed Ryan Coogler had cast him in Black Panther 3. While nothing has been confirmed, Achebe and Magneto are among the names we've since heard from scoopers claiming to know who the screen icon will play in the MCU threequel.
The Black Panther franchise has never struggled to attract top-tier talent, but someone like Washington joining a comic book franchise is a huge deal and could be a game-changer for Marvel Studios as a whole.
Doing the rounds to promote Sinners, Coogler was asked about Washington's comments and said, "I’m dying to work with Denzel and I’m hoping we can make that happen. I got every intention of working with him in that movie and as long as he’s interested - it’s going to happen," he confirmed.

Denzel Washington is one of the most influential actors in the industry these days. With over 40 years in Hollywood, Washington has been a part of some of the most successful movies in history. Interestingly, though, unlike many of his contemporaries, he is yet to step into the world of superhero flicks.
Remedying that long-awaited desire of his fans, he noted last November that he would be finally making his MCU debut with Black Panther 3. This, obviously, added to the hype already building around that movie for years.

However, the movie’s director, Ryan Coogler, recently revealed in an interview that even with Washington’s promise, his appearance in Black Panther 3 is still not a done deal.

"Today’s the daaay..." Sing that little assurance to yourself, and now imagine it being said in a terrifying Blumhouse movie. The latest offering is simply called The Woman in the Yard, which some may argue is already an iffy start. For others, the title might successfully evoke eeriness, especially for anyone who's ever lived out in the sticks and perhaps dealt with a shady trespasser. "Hey Mom, there's a woman in the yard," says the young girl in act 1.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by Sam Stefanak, this new monster-in-the-house feature is kept tight at just 85 minutes and still manages to utilize some of your favorite fright-fest devices with Dutch angles and high-concept editing to boot. It's too bad the third act gets lost in its own craziness, but maybe horror junkies can be forgiving this time around.

A state of the industry keynote is supposed to give a holistic view: Where do things stand across multiple fronts? By design, they can come across as glorified lists in speech form, comprised of scattershot bullet points, with the ultimate takeaway meant to be the sum of all the parts previously discussed.
“Number One on the Call Sheet,” the two-part documentary event on Apple TV+ devoted to assessing the opportunities and challenges for Black actors in Hollywood past and present, is a state of the industry keynote in cinematic form. Not exemplary for anything about its form or innovation, it succeeds like any good keynote: through sheer addition. This is as impressive a rundown of talent in a non-fiction project as you’re likely to see this year, even if they’re all just presented as talking heads.

Despite unveiling a massive cast for Avengers: Doomsday filled with some big names from across the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four rosters, some glaring omissions hint that Marvel Studios might have listened to a loud segment of its audiences and are making the same mistake that Lucasfilm did with Star Wars. For five hours, Marvel fans worldwide tuned into a live stream where a series of chairs were revealed, and a cast member for the highly anticipated Avengers movie was announced. As absurd as it may sound, fans waited to see what name would be confirmed.

Black Panther was released in 2018 to widespread critical acclaim. While there were some complaints about the expected CG-heavy final battle, the movie itself respected and celebrated African culture and inspired countless people worldwide.
T'Challa actor Chadwick Boseman died in 2020 following a hard-fought battle with cancer. The actor's passing sent shockwaves through Hollywood, forcing Marvel Studios to return to the drawing board with its planned Black Panther sequel.
The idea had been for it to deal with the fallout from Avengers: Endgame, with T'Challa returning from the "Blip" to learn his son had been born while he was among the dead. From there, we'd have followed the hero getting to know his child while likely doing battle with Namor the Submariner.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever instead dealt with the fallout from the hero's demise in-universe and followed Shuri as she inherited the Black Panther mantle.

Pull up a chair: The Avengers are assembling once again.
Marvel inundated social media on Wednesday with the cast announcement for its 2026 tentpole “Avengers: Doomsday.” Over more than five hours, the oversized superhero squad generated constant buzz (and memes) as viewers patiently watched a livestream that slowly revealed cast members’ names on the backs of director’s chairs.
It was the first official information on who will headline the first of a two-part finale to the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, and Marvel pulled out all the stops. It seems like just about everyone in Kevin Feige’s rolodex is on the call sheet. Stars from “Captain America,” “Black Panther,” “Thor” and “Ant-Man” are on the list, plus some upcoming franchise hopefuls from “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” and “Thunderbolts*.” But can “Doomsday” reach the $2.79 billion box-office heights of “Endgame”?

The Black Panther franchise is officially getting a new installment, as it seems Marvel Studios has already set a release date for another MCU sequel. The movie series faced the ultimate tragedy when Chadwick Boseman passed away before the making of Wakanda Forever, but the mantle has been carried over to the next generation. Marvel won't be shutting the gates of Wakanda anytime, either, as Avengers: Doomsday won't be the only time audiences are treated to the beloved superhero.
According to Daniel Richtman, Black Panther 3 is set to hit theaters in February 2028. Ryan Coogler is set to return as the director, while Letitia Wright is expected to reprise her role as Shuri aka Black Panther. That release window puts it ahead of Avengers: Secret Wars, which is releasing in theaters on May 7, 2027. Many have speculated that a new actor will take over the T'Challa role, but nothing has been confirmed on that front.

Yes, they are claiming that the new announcement will make you far more excited than seeing Downey Jr. under that Doom mask at the Sdcc.

Lately, there hasn’t been one Marvel movie that hasn’t caused some kind of controversy or the other. While the last film, Deadpool & Wolverine, is under the scrutiny of the public for its character Nicepool, thanks to the ongoing feud between Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds versus Justin Baldoni, the recently released Captain America: Brave New World has caused not one, not two, but several controversies.
From its CGI to the inclusion of the Israeli superhero Sabra, played by Israeli actress Shira Haas, the film has caused quite an uproar among Marvel fans. However, the biggest of it, perhaps, is the comparisons between Harrison Ford’s character, Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross, aka Red Hulk, and the current President of the United States, Donald Trump.

Fifteen years before they first shared the screen in Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan and Chadwick Boseman shared a history with a popular soap opera – All My Children. For just one episode, Boseman played Reggie Montgomery, the adopted son of Jackson Montgomery (Walt Wiley), before being replaced by Jordan.
Even from an early age, Boseman was an advocate for social injustice and racism. Feeling that Reggie was a stereotypical character, he expressed his concerns, leading to his dismissal. Jordan then went on to play the character for three years. But, as they would later reflect, their time on the soap had an unexpected influence on their performances and on how they approached their roles in the MCU.

Death comes in many forms but it was cancer that took away the lives of a couple of Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes. It was our Black Panther Chadwick Boseman in 2020 and then we lost Kamar de los Reyes, aka the White Tiger, from Daredevil: Born Again in 2023. Most of you know him as the charming antagonist from the Call of Duty: Black Ops franchise as Raul Menendez.
Recently, Daredevil: Born Again director Michael Cuesta discussed him while having a chat with Brandon Davis on Phase Hero: A Film & TV Podcast. And it was then he told us about the experience while working with Kamar. Just like the case with Boseman, Kamar never told anyone about the disease and went on to shoot the latest Marvel TV show.

Life isn't all happiness. Accordingly, cinema frequently reflects this duality with surprising tenderness. As a result, tearjerkers are a treasured favorite among cinema fans. For some, only the best movies can elicit powerful emotions to make viewers cry. Whether a film depicts tragic real-life events or the demise of a beloved fictional character, some movies are real heartbreakers.
For a film to shatter the hearts of its audience, it first must grip them with a captivating story. These movies don't simply portray tales of tragedy; they offer light among the darkness by sprinkling in samples of joy, thus creating unforgettable, poignant pictures. There are many sad movies, and then there are those that will leave viewers sobbing.
Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on March 13, 2025: Sometimes, movie fans just want a good cry. Sad movies are a great way to feel the depths of human emotion without having to experience those feelings firsthand.

Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan have been working together for more than 10 years now, and their latest collaboration, Sinners, is due in theaters in just over one month. According to FilmRatings.com, Sinners has officially been given an R-rating, the first time Coogler has directed an R-rated movie since Fruitvale Station (2013), the first film he ever directed in his career. After directing Fruitvale Station, which also stars Jordan alongside Kevin Durand, Coogler then helmed Creed, the Rocky spin-off movie, before stepping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe to helm the Chadwick Boseman-led Black Panther and its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Now, more than 10 years removed from his debut, Coogler is returning to his roots and delivering what may well be his most violent film yet.
