13 Going On 30 Review: I'm Still Delighted By How Jennifer Garner's Rom-Com Beautifully Maintains What Girls Can Lose In Adulthood
Image
Some may not be aware there's a little something extra at the very end of the credits for 13 Going on 30. It's not an extra scene in the vein of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's signature stingers (some of which have included 13 Going on 30 star Mark Ruffalo), but audio of teenage girls gleefully singing along to "Love is a Battlefield," much like in an earlier scene in the movie. I only just noticed this while rewatching the movie and was delighted by all it represents.

13 Going on 30 is 2004 fantasy romantic comedy about a 13-year-old girl named Jenna Rink, who, in 1987, dreams of being popular and wishes she were "thirty and flirty and thriving." She later wakes up in 2004 at the age of 30. Jennifer Garner stars as 30-year-old Jenna, while Christa B. Allen plays the role of young Jenna. Mark Ruffalo, Judy Greer, Jim Gaffigan, and Andy Serkis also star.

Starting Jan. 1, 2025, fans will be able to watch Mark Ruffalo and Jennifer Garner in 13 Going on 30 on Netflix. The rom-com premiered in 2004 with Gary Winick at the helm, following a 13-year-old girl who wishes she were older and wakes up as a 30-year-old fashion editor. It was a big commercial success when it premiered, but it has maintained its popularity and has become a cult classic since.

‘13 Going on 30′ Turns 20: Film’s Team on Jennifer Garner-Mark Ruffalo Chemistry, Reboot Talks
Image
Twenty years after its release, the Jennifer Garner-led comedy 13 Going on 30 is still thriving.

Sony released Gary Winick’s comedy in theaters April 23, 2004, and the film earned $96 million ($159 million today) at the global box office. Also featuring Mark Ruffalo, Judy Greer and Andy Serkis, the movie centered on teenage Jenna Rink (played by Christa B. Allen, now known as Christa Belle), who gets embarrassed at a party and makes a wish that transforms her into her 30-year-old self (Garner).

Co-writers Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa, in addition to Belle, separately share with The Hollywood Reporter about other actresses being considered for Garner’s part, Ruffalo feeling hesitant to do the “Thriller” dance, memories of Winick (who died of cancer in 2011 at age 49), the status of a stage musical, and persistent chatter among the film’s team regarding a potential onscreen reboot.

Is 13 Going on 30 Appropriate for Kids?
Image
If you were a teenager when the hit teen comedy film 13 Going on 30 was first released, you probably remember it as a very funny film that hit on a lot of themes that resonated with being a teenager. With a dazzling performance from Jennifer Garner that augmented her standing popularity and the film's general rom-com appeal, 13 Going on 30 quickly became an iconic teen movie. Particular highlights that made the movie a success were scenes like Garner leading an amazing dance break for Michael Jackson's Thriller, and Mark Ruffalo's charming performance opposite Garner as her jaded ex-friend Matty.

However, despite all its positive traits, once the film's structure, characters, and themes are analyzed more closely, it's also easy to understand why many people think it was inappropriate — not just for young kids, but even its own targeted demographic of teenagers.

Here's a closer look at...

13 Going On 30's Young Jennifer Garner Casting Was So Good, This $100 Million Rom-Com Repeated It 5 Years Later
Image
Jennifer Garner and Christa B. Allen played the same character in 13 Going on 30, who reunited in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, proving Allen was the perfect choice to play a younger version of Garner. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past featured Allen as young Jenny, the love interest of Matthew McConaughey's character, Connor. The Adam Project could have had Allen and Sean Marquette appear as Garner and Mark Ruffalo's characters in the past, further leveraging their chemistry.

The 2004 romantic comedy film 13 Going on 30 tells the story of Jenna Rink at 13 years old, played by Christa B. Allen, and at 30 years old, portrayed by Jennifer Garner, and another movie stole this casting idea a few years later. 13 Going on 30 starts on Jenna's 13th birthday in 1987. But when she tries too hard to fit in with the popular group and is embarrassed by her best friend Matty,...

We really hope you're able to stay poised after you realize how long it's been since 13 Going on 30 first hit theaters. The Fight That Never Ends Sneak Peek: Everyone Wants Change, But Will They Do The Work?
The Fight That Never Ends (2021)
If there's something that most people can agree on, it's the idea that the world could use more unity, community, justice, and change.

With its string of inspirational and heartening films, Lifetime presents The Fight that Never Ends, a film inspired by the real experiences of Joanne Beck, who serves as producer of the movie.

When times are bleak, it's nice to have uplifting and inspirational stories told, and this one fits the bill.

The Fight That Never ends is about community, the efforts of hardworking and selfless individuals who hope to instill change and curb the gang violence that is riddling a neighborhood.

It's a human story and a love one that pushes for the fight for racial justice through bringing unlikely souls together rather than sowing seeds of division.

The Fight That Never Ends is about a man, Leon Watkins, played by Allen Payne, who runs a community...

‘Revenge’ Oral History: Emily VanCamp, Madeleine Stowe and More Reflect on Real-Life Romance, Showrunner Swap on 10th Anniversary
Image
It’s been 10 years since audiences first met Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) in her quest for revenge on the wealthy Grayson family, who she believed were responsible not only for her father going to prison, but also for his death.

Loosely based on “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexandre Dumas, the series, aptly titled “Revenge,” ran for four seasons on ABC, from 2011-2015. It followed Emily (real name Amanda Clarke) as she moved to the Hamptons to carry out her plan, only to become more embroiled with the Graysons than she ever could have expected – and uncovering more secrets about her father than she ever knew possible.

Here, the cast and crew talk about the series’ overnight success, the confines of network television and about the departure of a key figure integral to the show’s DNA.

Mike Kelley (creator and showrunner): I met with Channing Dungey, who...

Pass the Razzles: Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo Had a Sweet 13 Going on 30 Reunion
Image

Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo are back together again, and it's making us super nostalgic. On Tuesday afternoon, the former 13 Going on 30 costars shared a photo of their sweet reunion on the set of The Adam Project, which is currently filming in Vancouver. "Reconnecting with an old pal," Ruffalo wrote alongside a selfie of the pair. "Anyone know where we can get Razzles in Canada?"

Garner and Ruffalo are set to play Ryan Reynolds' parents in the upcoming science fiction film, but they are well-known for playing Jenna and Matt in the popular rom-com 13 Going on 30. Of course, Garner and Ruffalo's reunion isn't the first time we've gotten nostalgic about the film. In 2018, Ariana Grande paid tribute to the movie in her "Thank U, Next" music video, and most recently, Christa B. Allen, who played young Jenna, re-created iconic scenes for Halloween.

Revenge Sequel: Who Needs to Return?
Emily Thorne/Amanda Clarke's twisted tale of revenge is over, but ABC is poised to kick off a new iteration of Revenge.

We reported earlier this month that a brand new series set in the same universe of 2011-15 TV original is officially in the works.

The new iteration follows a young Latinx immigrant who arrives in Malibu seeks revenge on a "Sackler-Esque pharmaceutical dynasty, whose insatiable greed lead to the murder of her biochemist mother, the destruction of her family, and a global epidemic."

The most intriguing aspect of a potential sequel is that a character from the original would be on board to guide this young woman on her mission.

No details have been revealed about who will be back, but that doesn't mean we can't chat about who should return in some capacity for the sequel.

The series was filled with colorful characters, and that's why...

Soapy drama set against the backdrop of a Miami Beach hotel revolves around the family who owns the business, the staff who run it and the explosive secrets they hide under the perfect exterior.

J.R.R. Tolkien
61 years ago today: ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’ was released
J.R.R. Tolkien
61 years ago today, J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” continued with the release of its second volume, “The Two Towers.” That November release followed that summer’s debut of “The Fellowship of the Ring,” which came nearly two decades after “The Hobbit” hit shelves in 1937. Tolkien’s epic tale of Middle-earth continued in this second volume, introducing readers to Treebeard and his fellow Ents, to the realm of Rohan and to Gríma Wormtongue. The third “Lord of the Rings” volume, “The Return of the King” was released in October 1955, so fans had to wait nearly 12 months to find out what happened after the cliffhanger of “Two Towers,” which ends with Samwise realizing that Frodo had not been killed by Shelob’s venomous sting, as it had appeared, but merely drugged. “Frodo was alive but taken by the Enemy,” the book ends. Rayner Unwin, the books’ publisher, later said, “For...
