Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Star Trek’: Why We’re Divided on Reports That He Could Tackle a Blockbuster
Star Trek (2009)
One of the most unexpected projects was reported this week, as news broke that Quentin Tarantino had conceived of an idea for a “Star Trek” movie that impressed Hollywood heavyweight J.J. Abrams. Tarantino is allegedly sharing the idea with a group of writers and may direct the project. Considering the filmmaker’s long-standing independence from the studio system and especially franchises, IndieWire’s staff debated the prospects of this sudden mid-career twist.

Eric Kohn: No major American filmmaker has flaunted his autonomy from the Hollywood system more than Quentin Tarantino, whose characters speak and whose movies move in ways that are forever connected to his name. So the idea of Tarantino — who flirted with studio projects early in his success before paving his own path — could have anything to do with a “Star Trek” movie is a bit baffling. Although I love the idea of a Qt/Jj combo, the suggestion that Tarantino’s energetic,...

Award-winning playwright, author, and the founding artistic director of the Gloucester Stage Company, Israel Horovitz, has been accused of sexual assault by 9 women and his son, Beastie Boys rapper and musician Adam Horovitz, aka Ad-Rock, has spoken out to say that he believes the allegations and stands behind the women. The stories range from the mid-1980s all the way up to last year and range from sexual abuse to inappropriate touching, with one of the women stating that she had known the elder Horovitz since she was 11-years old and considered him to be an honorary grandfather while another was Adam Horovitz's high school girlfriend. Israel Horovitz has released a statement claiming to have a "different memory" of the events.

The 78-year old Israel Horovitz responded to the allegations by saying that he had "a different memory of some of these events" and apologizing, "with all my heart...

Watch: Jordan Vogt-Roberts' Live-Action Trailer for 'Destiny 2' Game
"It's time to bring out the big guns." Time for something a bit different than the movie trailers we normally see, but still totally fun. Filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts (director of Kong: Skull Island and The Kings of Summer) has made a live-action trailer for the new video game Destiny 2 from Bungie. Sometimes we'll post one of these game trailers because it's live-action and because it's directed by a talented filmmaker who usually makes movies. That's certainly the case with this, and it's a very amusing trailer set to Beastie Boys "Sabotage". Vogt-Roberts has also been posting some behind-the-scenes footage and photos on his Twitter recently, to give us an inside look at the process of making this trailer. If you want to pick up a copy of the video game, it's already available now. Fire it up. And then back to our regularly scheduled movie coverage. Check out Jordan Vogt-Roberts...

Arnold Schwarzenegger in Predator (1987)
Predator with Nes Contra Sounds Is Exactly Why the Internet Rules
Arnold Schwarzenegger in Predator (1987)
Everybody loves 1987's Predator and a lot of people enjoy the Nintendo game Contra. So, why not put the two of them together? That's exactly what the RetroSFX YouTube channel wondered and so they actually did it and it's exactly what we need in our lives right now. Mashups are nothing new, but sometimes they work together just perfectly. We've seen the Muppets singing Beastie Boys songs all the way to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles mixed with Reservoir Dogs to amazing results, but somehow Predator and Contra are just meant to be together in way that you just have to see to believe.

The crew over at RetroSFX specialize in doing mashups with beloved movies and typically Nintendo Entertainment System games with varying results, but Contra and Predator work together way better than they should. The video starts with some of the theme to Contra while Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer...

Internet Genius Recreates the Beastie Boys' 'Sabotage' Video with Sesame Street Characters
Mike D, Adam Horovitz, Adam Yauch, and Beastie Boys
If you thought the original Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” music video couldn’t be any more cinematic, try adding Sesame Street characters from the 1985 film Follow that Bird. A fan has combined the iconic ’90s vid with your favorite Muppets, and the result—featuring Big Bird and Cookie Monster—might have topped the Spike Jonze-directed original.

Adam Schleichkorn (a.k.a. Mylo the Cat) posted the mashup on his YouTube channel isthishowyougoviral. The YouTuber explained how the original video was “one of the greatest of all time” and he therefore “couldn’t do a regular old lip sync video.” Other...

Sesame Street Comes For Spike Jonze With This Remake of Beastie Boys’ ‘Sabotage’ — Watch
Leslie Carrara-Rudolph, David Rudman, Matt Vogel, and Ryan Dillon in Sesame Street (1969)
No, it’s not a promo for the all puppet Beastie Boys cover band, The Beastie Birds, but the latest Sesame Street mashup is just as much fun. From the Webby Award-winning genius who set “Rick and Morty” to the mellifluous tunes of Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools (Drank),” comes yet another highly entertaining remake — this time to Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage.”

The original video was directed by none other than Spike Jonze, and this cheeky update follows that one pretty faithfully. Opening with Big Bird on the run in a cornfield, and ending with him lost in a parade, Big Bird’s round eyes and bumbling gait fit fit perfectly with the song’s distorted guitar riffs. Jonze’s original video payed homage to the television crime dramas of the 1970s,...

‘I’ll knock your ass out’: Ayana Fite threatens Reginae Carter on Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta
Ayana Fite threatens Reginae Carter on tonight’s Growing Up Hip Hop Atlanta, telling her: “I’ll knock your ass out.” The row comes after Reginae’s altercation with Ayana’s cousin Brandon Barnes, a vocal coach and son of hip-hop manager Ms. Deb, on last week’s episode. It came after Brandon made reference to Lil’ Wayne needing help with his career, and his comments about Black Lives Matter — saying it had “nothing to do with” him — which some said belittled the movement. Reginae, Lil’ Wayne’s daughter, ended up having a full-blown confrontation with him, while Ayana, daughter of The Beastie Boys’ DJ Hurricane,...read more...

Cool Star Wars Rebels Easter Eggs for Indiana Jones, Revenge Of The Sith, and More
In the most recent episode of Star Wars Rebels, "Through Imperial Eyes," fans got a close look at Grand Admiral Thrawn's office in his Star Destroyer, and you might have missed some pretty cool little Easter eggs.

Thanks to a recent episode of Rebels Recon, those Easter eggs were officially pointed out by Art Director Kilian Plunkett. Those Easter eggs include the Holy Grail from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade; the helmet of the Clone Trooper that Yoda decapitated in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith; a painting of Lothal on the wall that is actual concept art from legendary Star Wars artist Ralph McQuarrie; and a bust of an Abednedo, which is the same species as the pilot Ello Asty in The Force Awakens. The recognisable future of Children Of Men
Mark Harrison Feb 27, 2017

Alfonso Cuaron's Children Of Men is a film from a decade ago that very much stands the test of time...

“Last one to die, please turn out the light.”

The tenth anniversary of Children Of Men came at the end of a tumultuous year in politics. You don't have to look far on the web for thinkpieces about how the results of the Brexit referendum or the election of Donald Trump as Us President have brought us closer to the grim forecast of Alfonso Cuarón's superb dystopian thriller, but rewatching it now, the film feels a triumph of preparation rather than prescience.

Based on Pd James' novel, the film takes place in the year 2027, in the midst of a global epidemic of infertility. Britain has closed its doors to immigrants and refuses to acknowledge the status of 'fugees' as human beings. The day after the...

Mike D at an event for Awesome; I Shot That! (2006)
A Malibu beach house with “a lawn that stretched out to a fruit orchard bordered by a neighbor’s horse pasture” is not likely atop the list of places Beastie Boys fans would expect to find New York-bred rapper Mike D.

But that’s exactly where the Mc (born Michael Diamond), 51, has decamped to with his wife, Tamra, and teenage sons Davis and Skyler. The latest film in the J.J. Abrams produced Trek universe, Star Trek Beyond sees USS Enterprise crew sent to Starbase Yorktown, an outpost on the edge of Federation eplored space. Their misson this time? The third film in the rebooted cinematic franchise, Star Trek Beyond has been said to be the first in the series to stand on its own merits: it certainly relies less on what has come before than either of the two previous films. There’s no Ambassador Spock,...

‘Get Over It!’: 79-Year-Old Trump Supporter Arrested for Allegedly Vandalizing Children’s Mural
Hillary Clinton
The mystery of the anti-Hillary Clinton, pro-Donald Trump vandals who continued to deface a beautiful children’s mural took a while to solve.

Power Stretch Studios in Montclair, New Jersey, had suffered a fire in September, and its windows and door was boarded up. Two days after the Nov. 8 presidential election, someone wrote on the boards: “Lock her up,” a popular refrain against Clinton amongst Trump supporters during his campaign. A studio employee painted over it, but the vandals returned, writing ”America Has Spoken” with Trump’s face drawn next to it.

Gina Shaw, a friend of studio owner Hakika DuBose,...

Incredible (and Overlooked) Daft Punk & Beastie Boys Mashup Album Resurfaces
Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo, and Daft Punk in Tron: Legacy (2010)
Everyone loves a good mashup. Whether it’s Danger Mouse’s landmark Grey Album or Carly Rae Jepsen versus Nine Inch Nails, it’s a unique art form that re-contextualizes both included works — and gives us some new bangers.

All of which is to say, this two-year old Daft Punk and Beastie Boys mashup is getting passed around this week thanks to a Reddit post, and we couldn’t be happier to have it in the world.

Toronto producer Coins created the album Daft Science by intricately layering the finest of Beastie verses over Daft Punk’s indelible, futuristic beats.

‘808’ Trailer: New Documentary on the Iconic Drum Machine Features Questlove, Pharrell and More
Jon Brion at an event for I Heart Huckabees (2004)
The average person has probably never heard of the Roland Tr-808 (a.k.a. the “808”) drum machine, but they have almost certainly heard it.

Drum machines have played a crucial role in the history and development of hip-hop music. In the golden age of the genre, they were relatively inexpensive and could simulate various drum sounds. The 808 was unique in that it provided a very low-frequency bass that has become synonymous with hip-hop.

Brad Pitt and Edward Norton in Fight Club (1999)
Here’s an epic cinephile gift being released just in time for the 2016 holiday season. Mondo has announced it is bringing the Dust Brothers’ “Fight Club” original score back to vinyl for the first time in 15 years. The release, which includes two LPs pressed on 180-gram “Pink Soap” vinyl, will be available for purchase starting this Wednesday, November 16.

Released in 1999, “Fight Club” has emerged as one of the most popular cult films over the last decade. It singlehandedly turned David Fincher into an auteur filmmaker even fanboys could love, and that epic twist still registers disbelief even 17 years later. To this day, the psycho-thriller is the only film score the Dust Brothers have ever made, and they were approached personally by Fincher to make the music since he preferred hiring...

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ Final Trailer: Felicity Jones and Darth Vader Go To War In Most Thrilling Preview Yet
Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, James Earl Jones, David Prowse, and Kenny Baker in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)
Among the many spinoffs that will be released in the coming months, none are as anticipated as “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” The first “Star Wars” standalone film promises to take fans on an all-new epic adventure, and if it’s anything like what we see in the new trailer, sign us up!

The Gareth Edwards-directed action film centers around Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), leader of a group of unlikely heroes who band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star. The story takes place shortly before the events of “A New Hope” and is a key event in the “Star Wars” timeline.

The movie features an all-star cast including Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker.

Watch: Brilliant Mashup of Harry Potter and The Beastie Boys
You'd think I'd be tired of seeing other films parodied to resemble the Star Trek: Beyond trailer...but I'm not. Also this isn't a trailer, this is a full-out compilation of every badass moment in the Harry Potter films accompanied by The Beastie Boys! It seems like "Sabotage" is the perfect song for any movie compilation.

Great work by Alex Perez. ...

Newswire: Buzzard’s Joel Potrykus releasing his new film as a “pay what you want” download
Buzzard, Joel Potrykus’ idiosyncratic and darkly funny portrait of an increasingly paranoid and psychotic Midwestern slacker, established the director as a talent to watch. And in keeping with the underground ethos on display in all of Potrykus’ films, his follow-up, The Alchemist Cookbook, is being released as a “pay what you want” download through BitTorrent Now.

This isn’t unusual for a micro-budget indie, but the kicker here is that The Alchemist Cookbook isn’t self-distributed. In fact, the whole thing is being handled by Oscilloscope, the respected indie distributor co-founded by late Adam Yauch of Beastie Boys fame. While same-day releases to VOD or digital platforms like iTunes have become popular among the indie and arthouse distributors, the choice of delivery and pricing model represents a step in a different direction.

Potrykus has written about the plan in a post for Bundle.Media that addresses his own feelings about...

Revisiting Star Trek Tng: The Drumhead
James Hunt Sep 16, 2016

Witch hunts, interrogation and paranoia feature in fairly straightforward space-court Star Trek: Tng episode The Drumhead...

This review contains spoilers.

4.21 The Drumhead

Sabotage! On board the Enterprise! D! Cue up the Beastie Boys! (Actually don’t, we’ve all seen Star Trek Beyond and the last thing we need is that being taken literally again.)

But regardless, a Klingon Exchange officer – J’Dan the Exobiologist – stands (well, sits) accused of trying to blow up the Enterprise’s engines and funnelling secrets to the Romulans. In an attempt to establish his innocence he tries to bribe Worf, who gives him the full Space Rodney King treatment in a scene which I can’t decide if I’m supposed to feel uncomfortable with or not.

Luckily, one of Starfleet’s meddling Admirals is around to help investigate this potential espionage onboard the Enterprise. Not only that, Admiral Satie has...

‘Star Wars Rogue One’ Trailer Gets Even Better When You Add the Beastie Boys — Watch
Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, James Earl Jones, David Prowse, and Kenny Baker in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)
After watching the first teaser for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” audiences were pretty pumped for the spin-off action film. Then the first trailer arrived and all hell broke loose (in a good way). But now, excitement for the film is on another level, all thanks to the Beastie Boys.

Video editor and YouTuber Matthew Longua made a killer new remix trailer for “Rogue One,” but instead of using composer Alexandre Desplat’s music, he swapped it out for the song “Sabotage” by Beastie Boys. The result is amazing!

The song cues in after Jyn Erso’s (Felicity Jones) line “I rebel,” and instantly kicks the video into high gear, making the footage look even more badass, all while elevating the action sequences.

The 1960s Star Trek Series Gets an Updated Beyond Style Trailer
YouTube user Darth Blender has released an updated fan trailer for the original 1960s Star Trek series in the style of Star Trek Beyond. That means that you’re going to here the classic Beastie Boys song “Sabotage” one more time. "Sabotage" is one of my favorite songs ever, so I never get tired of listening to it. The trailer is cut together incredibly well, and if you’re a fan of the original series, you’re gonna enjoy this.

Key lessons learned from this summer’s blockbuster movies
Matt Edwards Aug 30, 2016

From Captain America: Civil War through to Ghostbusters, what did we learn from summer blockbuster season 2016?

If it wasn’t for summer blockbuster season it would be a nightmare for Den of Geek to maintain our chic pale complexions. We’ve seen so many films this summer that we look like porcelain dolls (the shine comes from popcorn grease).

It was never our intention to learn anything other than imperative information about Jason Bourne’s backstory. None the less, 2016 had proven to be such an interesting year for cinema that we couldn’t help but be struck by the following observations.

A quick note before we dig in. We’re counting summer blockbuster season as March to the end of August. We know that’s not how seasons work, but that feels like a tidy set of dates to use to capture the films that are part of the mid-year blockbuster flurry.

Watch Zoe Saldana's Hilarious Dubsmash Featuring Her Husband and Sons
Star Trek (2009)
Here's another reason to love Zoe Saldana.  The Star Trek star shared a Dubsmash video that she made with her husband Marco Perego and their twin boys Cy and Bowie. The actress and her hubby sing along to the Beastie Boys' "So What Cha Want," as their sons are snuggled in baby carriers.  "I'm only posting this dubsmash because Simon Pegg insisted. He reminded me how much the crew laughed when I sent this video. It was over a weekend while we were shooting Star Trek in Vancouver last summer," she captioned the video. "Every time I see all the videos we all did it makes me think of Anton. We hope you get a laugh out of this. #startrek...

This 'Rogue One' as 'Friends' trailer makes no sense but works really well
Mike D, Adam Horovitz, Adam Yauch, and Beastie Boys
We've had a few trailers for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and we're getting to that point where fans are starting to do fun things with them. For your consideration, two such fan works - Rogue One as Friends and Rogue One as a Beastie Boys music video. CineMash's Bobby Burns put together a version of the Rogue One trailer to the Friends theme song by The Rembrandts, complete with title card and credits. The concept didn't really make sense to me (I know stuff has been put to Friends before) but it still kinda works. There's also this other fan edit by Matthew Longua. I'm of the mind that Beastie Boys "Sabotage" is way overused in everything but I guess there's a reason for that. Give it a watch. I'm still waiting for a fan (or, you know, Disney/Lucasfilm) to make a trailer that explains to more...

Rogue One Fan Posters Channel Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket
Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, James Earl Jones, David Prowse, and Kenny Baker in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)
Yesterday, we showed you a fan-made trailer remix for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which features the iconic Beastie Boys song "Sabotage." It seems that another artist decided to pay tribute to this Star Wars spinoff as well, with two new posters surfacing from artist Orlando Arocena. While these posters aren't official, they have quickly gone viral, since this poster is essentially a tribute to the poster for Stanely Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket.

Orlando Arocena first debuted these posters on Twitter, and they have quickly spread throughout the Internet, with many fans praising these designs. Instead of the standard military helmet from the Full Metal Jacket poster, this artist offers two different variations, one with a Rebel pilot helmet and another helmet worn by Felicity Jones' Jyn Erso. Here's what the artist had to say on a statement from his Behance gallery website.

"Back in 2015 i was excited...

Star Wars: Rogue One Beastie Boys Remix Trailer Is Awesome
Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, James Earl Jones, David Prowse, and Kenny Baker in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)
Are you ready to get pumped for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story? Editor Matthew Longua has cobbled together a new Rogue One trailer that is entirely set to the Beastie Boys classic Sabotage. Sure, the song has been used to great effect in the new Star Trek movies, but this is pretty cool in its own right.

This new trailer actually takes all the footage released thus far, setting it to the rock rap tune. It even culls some cool behind-the-scenes footage from the Star Wars Celebration sizzle reel, incorporating it in a new way that makes this movie look like a lot of fun. Maybe Star Wars and the Beastie Boys shouldn't mix so well. But it certainly does.

What's perhaps quite funny about this new version of the Rogue One trailer is that Paramount actually released an official Star Trek Beyond trailer set to the same tune.

Geek-Friendly Finds: Fan Sets Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Footage To The Beastie Boys
Star Trek Beyond certainly got a decent amount of hate when it released its first trailer around eight months ago. It was a movie that had undergone quite a shake-up early on in its development. J.J. Abrams left the director's chair to go on to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, leaving a void that took some time to fill. Roberto Orci was the man who many thought would be his successor, but soon enough, he was quickly ushered off the project altogether, and instead, Fast & Furious director Justin Lin was brought on board to helm the threequel.

None of the news really seemed to inspire confidence for Trek fans who were holding out hope that the series may have a return to form -- to a slower-paced, more meditative style that the original series was better known for. Instead, when the first trailer came out, they were treated to a...
