Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee‘s hit “Despacito” was without a doubt the biggest song of the year in 2017, and it only got bigger when Justin Bieber hopped on a remix.
However, had things gone differently, it might have been Ariana Grande hopping on the chart-topper.
During a recent interview, Luis opened up about how the major remix came together and recalled his first attempts to get the “thank u, next” hitmaker involved.

While on The Interview with Yordi Rosado podcast, Luis explained that Justin had heard “Despacito” while on tour and was interested in hopping on it.
According to a translation provided by Google, Justin reached out to his then-manager Scooter Braun. Interestingly, he was already familiar with the song.

Have you ever looked at Donald Trump and pictured him getting down to “Despacito”? Popping his geriatric kneecaps to “God’s Plan”? Well, the Republican National Committee has. The RNC featured both songs in the first installment of a playlist series aimed at generating hype around its 2024 nominating convention, which will take place in Milwaukee this July and crown Trump as the party’s official presidential nominee.
Notably, the playlist features few pro-Trump artists — and none of the cringe-inducing Maga rappers who’ve gone viral debasing themselves in the former president’s name.

Sean Wolfington, the executive producer of “Sound of Freedom” and most recently “Cabrini”; Luis Fonsi, a five-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, musician and producer; and songwriter Linda Perry have joined the producing team for the film. It’s a group that also includes Oscar-nominated “Roma” star Yalitza Aparicio. In addition, Fonsi will record an original song for the film, which will be written by Perry. “City of Dreams,” which marks Mohit Ramchandani’s feature directorial debut, will open in theaters nationwide on Aug. 30.

When the MTV Video Music Awards announced its nominations last month, no one was surprised when Taylor Swift and Sza were the top contenders. But heads turned when Sza’s name was missing from the artist of the year category after the star launched one of the year’s top albums with Sos, both a critical and commercial success.
“Obviously, she had one of the best years, if not the best year, of any artist at this point. I don’t see why she wouldn’t be nominated for artist of the year. It just really didn’t make any sense to me. It’s disrespectful,” Sza’s manager, Terrence “Punch” Henderson, tells The Hollywood Reporter in an interview.
Those nominated for artist of the year included Beyoncé, Shakira, Nicki Minaj, Karol G, Doja Cat and Swift, who won the prize at Tuesday night’s show.

In a break from the norm of this year’s upfronts week, TelevisaUnivision’s presentation Tuesday morning at Pier 36 in the Lower East Side of Manhattan had no picketing writers outside; no protesters; and no dramatic executive or talent departures.
It was perhaps the only upfront of the week to be business as usual, with the WGA strike not impacting the company (which produces most of its Spanish-language programming in Mexico and Colombia), and a lack of corporate drama and intrigue.
In its place was a show of confidence, as executives touted a theme of “Young America,” noting that with the demographic changes in the country, much of that growth will come from Hispanics.
“We will be 100 percent of the 18 to 34 year old growth over the next five years, that’s what clients are leaning into,” TelevisaUnivision ad sales chief Donna Speciale told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview ahead of its upfront presentation.

When you think of big Latin superstars, you might default to Bad Bunny. However, one of the most consistently successful Latin artists of the past five years has undoubtedly been Karol G, who has notched hits like “Mi Cama,” “Tusa,” “Bichota,” and most recently “Mamiii” and “Provenza.” While Karol’s rise has been perhaps slower than Bad Bunny’s, it does seem like the Colombian superstar has made it, especially with the success of her most recent record, “Mañana Será Bonito.” The album managed to become the first all-Spanish album by a female singer to top the Billboard 200, debuting at number-one with over 90,000 units. “Mañana Será Bonito” is also only the third all-Spanish album to top the chart, with the first two being “El Último Tour del Mundo” and “Un Verano Sin Ti,” both by Bad Bunny. At the last Grammys, we saw that Bad Bunny’s success was rewarded by recording academy members,...

Guns N’ Roses’ “November Rain” is the first full-on rock music video to hit 2 billion views on YouTube. The milestone comes a little more than 13 years since the 1991 clip was uploaded to the streaming platform on Christmas Day of 2009.
The epic ballad boasts an equally grand music video starring singer Axl Rose and his then-girlfriend, supermodel Stephanie Seymour. It includes a memorable scene in which Slash steps outside a church to deliver his guitar solo in a large open field.
While many music videos have crossed the 2 billion threshold on YouTube, “November Rain” is the first purely rock one to do so. When mastering engineer Emerson Mancini works on an album, he typically doesn’t listen closely to the lyrics during his first session. But as he engineered Kendrick Lamar’s “Auntie Diaries,” from the album Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, Mancini had an emotional reaction to the words Lamar recited.
“My auntie is a man now/I think I’m old enough to understand now,” the prolific artist raps.
“I was like, ‘What? What’s happening? What is this?’ I ultimately had to stop and play the whole thing,” Mancini admitted. “I needed to know what this is about because I had just started taking testosterone a couple of months prior. The whole experience was really raw at the moment, and it was amazing to me.”

Harry Styles‘s “As It Was” isn’t just the biggest hit of the year, it’s one of the biggest hits of all time on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. If it gets into Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the Grammys — he’d be hard to deny at least a nomination at this point — can anyone beat him? Even Adele?
As of this writing “As It Was” has spent 15 nonconsecutive weeks at number-one between April and October. Only three songs have ever spent longer in the top spot: Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus‘s “Old Town Road” (19 weeks); Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men‘s “One Sweet Day” (16 weeks); and Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, and Justin Bieber‘s “Despacito” (16 weeks). SEE2022 Latin Grammy predictions: Record of the Year is a battle between young stars and old favorites
Let’s go through the process of elimination here. Ricky Martin‘s “A Veces Bien y A Veces Mal,” Daddy Yankee‘s “Agua,” and Mon Laferte‘s “Algo Es Mejor” are probably here in part due to being alphabetically high on the ballot, and since none of them made much noise, they will likely not win. While Carla Morrison and Fonseca are both highly respected artists, their respective songs “Encontrarme” and “Besos En La Frente” also didn’t really make much of an impact. Those five are likely the filler nominees.

Reggaeton originated in Panama as Afro-diasporic music. It was a transformation of dancehall, hip-hop, and reggae en español that eventually made its way to NYC, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and the rest of Latin America. Some of the pioneering artists behind the musical revolution included El General and Renato. But reggaeton wouldn't evolve out of el underground movement and gain the commercial attention it deserved until the early 2000s when a Puerto Rican rapper on the island by the name of Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, who we all know today as Daddy Yankee, dropped his megahit "Gasolina" off his "Barrio Fino" album. The song debuted at No.1 on Billboard's Top Latin Album charts on July 31, 2004, becoming the first reggaeton album to hit that spot. It would eventually become the top-selling Latin album of 2005 - and the entire decade - making him the leyenda of reggaeton he is today.

It's time to pantomime a ride on a galloping horse, because 'Gangnam Style' just turned ten.
Psy's groundbreaking music video, which played a significant role in the global expansion of K-pop, arrived on YouTube on July 15, 2012. In November of that year, 'Gangnam Style' became the all-time most-watched video on YouTube. A few weeks after that, it became the first video to crack the billion-view threshold.
Ten years later, 'Gangnam Style' is no longer the most-viewed music video on YouTube. That crown was passed to Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee in 2017. Many artists other than Psy have now seen their music videos surpass ten-digit viewership, and to celebrate the tenth birthday of 'Gangnam Style,' YouTube shared some data about what it called the "Billion Views Club."
