- In the 1960s, he played professionally for the San Diego Chargers, Houston Oilers and Kansas City Chiefs. He was the first football player to make the transition to successful wrestler.

- In those days of the early 1960's and the National Football League and the upstart American Football League were competing for the services of collegiate footballers, they held separate player drafts. Ernie Ladd found himself being sought after by the NFL Chicago Bears; as well as by the AFL San Diego Chargers, with whom he opted to go with.
