This year’s lineup is quite competitive, with multiple previous winners and nominees vying for noms alongside breakthrough critics picks. With last year’s victories for Paramore and Boygenius, it looked like the voters were starting to skew younger and fall more in line with critics. Will that stay the same this year?

The American Music Awards came back in a big way.
The 50th anniversary special of the performance-filled event averaged more than 6 million viewers in its Oct. 6 broadcast on CBS.
That’s a 54 percent increase over the previous edition of the AMAs, which last aired in 2022 on ABC. That marks the largest year-over-year growth of a music special or award show on TV this year. It also stands as the second-most-watched music awards show in the U.S. in 2024 and the most-watched entertainment program on CBS in October so far.
The special also was the most-watched entertainment program on Oct. 6, behind only the NFL. It also beat out other major sports coverage including the MLB Playoffs and NASCAR.
Dick Clark Productions also said that the special is also the most-streamed AMAs in the show’s history and has notched 65 million views across social media platforms since it aired.

One of the most famous artists who took on the mantle of classic rock during the 1970s was The Eagles’ Don Henley. The 1970s were also the decade of punk rock. Henley felt that punk rock had some deep issues. He also felt that there were issues with his band’s approach to music.
The Eagles’ Don Henley explained his ‘messy’ philosophy of rock ‘n’ roll
During a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone, The Eagles’ Don Henley explained his band’s approach to music. “We got saddled with that perfectionist label because we were always paying attention to detail, always trying to up our game,” he said. “There is no such thing as ‘perfection’ in rock ‘n’ roll, although we did strive to be tight, musically, and to sing and play in tune. No apologies to be made for that.

In the absence of a phenomenon like “Barbenheimer,” which dominated the Grammys’ visual-media categories last year, the outlook for 2025 is considerably more complicated and, some might say, more interesting.
Look for the summer’s biggest movie hits, “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine,” to land spots in the score and compilation soundtrack categories when the Grammy nominees are announced Nov. 8. But everything else is up in the air until then.
The compilation soundtrack category is the toughest to read, as there have been few films with breakout hits. “Twisters” is the summer’s biggest soundtrack, hitting No. 7 on the Billboard charts, so look for the tornado movie to score as an album and potentially in the song category for a pair of original country tunes: Luke Combs’ “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma” and Lainey Wilson’s “Out of Oklahoma.”

Green Day‘s music has been banned from two Las Vegas radio stations after Billie Joe Armstrong called the city “the worst shithole in America.”
Armstrong’s comments stemmed from his beloved Oakland Athletics’ upcoming move to the Sin City. Like many, Armstrong is incensed about his hometown MLB team’s unceremonious relocation to Las Vegas and owner John Fisher’s apparent disregard for the team’s deeply loyal fanbase. The A’s just played their final game at the Oakland Coliseum this past Thursday (September 26th) in front of a sell-out crowd, ending a 57-year run in the Bay Area despite fans’ ongoing pleas for Fisher to “Sell the Team.”
Armstrong put in his two cents on the matter during Green Day’s concert at Oracle Park in San Francisco on September 20th.
“We don’t take shit from people like fucking John Fisher,” Armstrong said on stage, [via Kron 4] before adding: “I hate Las Vegas.

Songs like Adele’s “Someone Like You,” Green Day’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” Bob Dylan’s “I Want You” and R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion” have been blocked by YouTube in a legal dispute with Sesac, a performance rights organization that deals with copyright issues for performers and publishers.
Other musicians affected by the blockage include Alice in Chains, Burna Boy and Fleetwood Mac. Though some of the artists’ songs display a black screen — which reads “Video unavailable” with the subhead “This video contains content from Sesac. It is not available in your country.” — not all tracks are affected.
Sesac is among several companies that helps songwriters protect their original work and collect royalties. Just as with Universal Music Group’s dispute with TikTok earlier this year, which resulted in four million songs from artists like Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny and Adele being pulled from the social media platform for months,...

Songs by Adele, Kendrick Lamar, Bob Dylan, Nirvana, Green Day and Mariah Carey, among others, are returning to YouTube after a contract dispute between the platform and Sesac, a performing rights organization, was resolved.
A YouTube spokesperson shared in a statement with The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, “We’re pleased that Sesac reconsidered our offer. We’ve reached a deal and content will come back up shortly. We appreciate everyone’s patience during this time.”
Earlier, some songs by several artists were met with this message when attempting to be played: “This video contains content from Sesac. It is not available in your country.”

Remember Green Day’s catchy tune, Nice Guys Finish Last? Well, if you need proof, just look at Tom Cruise striking out on a date in his prime! Who would’ve thought that the man who can bring enemies to their knees couldn’t get Heather Locklear to swoon?
Indeed, from rescuing his partner on-screen as Maverick in Top Gun or performing jaw-dropping stunts as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible, one would think that wooing a lady would be part and parcel of Cruise’s repertoire.

But even the most charming leading men trip over their words. The actor has had three marriages. Oh, and let’s not forget his list of high-profile romances, like those with Cher and Locklear. But hold your horses; let’s talk about that time he crashed and burned on his first date with the latter.

Believe it or not, the 2024 VMAs have officially arrived. On Wednesday, the biggest names in music gathered for the MTV Video Music Awards to see who would take home the night’s top prizes.
Taylor Swift led the pack of nominees with 12 nods, almost all of which were for the visual for her Tortured Poets Department single with Post Malone, “Fortnight.” The clip is up for the night’s big prize, Video of the Year, offering Swift the chance to notch a record-extending fifth victory in that category. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the MTV Video Music Awards. The inaugural ceremony, held at Radio City Music Hall and hosted by Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler in 1984, saw the Cars taking home video of the year their groundbreaking clip for “You Might Think.”
Since then, the VMAs have doled out 39 more trophies for their top prize, with only a small handful of acts joining the club of repeat winners. Taylor Swift has racked up four wins while Eminem, Rihanna, and Beyoncé have notched two a piece (both Swift and Eminem have a shot at adding to their totals again this year).
Despite MTV handing over the choice to viewers in 2006, the quality of the winners in the category has remained surprisingly consistent, with only a few total duds or headscratchers. To celebrate the VMAs’ ruby anniversary, we ranked all 40 video of the year winners from worst to best.

It’s been 20 years since Green Day’s American Idiot first arrived, and the seminal pop-punk album is still striking a chord with fans worldwide, as evidenced by the title track reaching a significant milestone: surpassing 1 billion streams on Spotify.
The achievement occurred this past week as Green Day is on the road with their “Saviors Tour,” which is not only supporting their new album, Saviors, but celebrates the 30th anniversary of Dookie and the 20th anniversary of American Idiot, with the band performing both albums in full at each stop.

Lyrically, “American Idiot” itself speaks to the turbulent socio-political climate of America in the 21st century, referencing national tension, propaganda, a country controlled by the media, and more. Classic rock culture can get a little repetitive. For example, a member of Oasis said “Wonderwall” inspires the same reaction as John Lennon’s “Imagine.” He has a point — and that’s not necessarily a good thing for Oasis.
Oasis’ Liam Gallagher said ‘Wonderwall’ is as divisive as John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’
During a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, Oasis’ Liam Gallagher reacted to the continuing popularity of “Wonderwall.” “I don’t know anything about Spotify and all that,” he says. “But all I can say is people love it. “Wonderwall” and “Imagine” aren’t that different on a musical level. Both are middle-of-the-road songs that straddle the line between soft rock and pop. While some listeners find their emotionality moving,...

The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards are scheduled for September 11, with names from Sabrina Carpenter to Lenny Kravitz to Sza all vying to take trophies home, and for some of them it would be their first VMA wins at that. Let’s break down some of the genre categories below to try to see who stands the best chances of winning.
Seevma records that could be broken this year: Taylor Swift, Anitta, Eminem …

This category is weird this year, having no specific videos attached to the nominees. As such, it’s unclear what exactly people should be voting for. The artists themselves? This is a call from Donald Trump to Foo Fighters.
A spokesman for the ex-potus and current GOP presidential nominee hit back at the multiplatinum band today after Dave Grohl and company complained about their hit “My Hero” being played at a weekend rally without the band’s consent.
“It’s Times Like These facts matter, don’t be a Pretender,” Trump’s rep Steven Cheung wrote on X, copping the titles of two Foo tracks.
“My Hero” blared on the Pa during a rally with new endorsee Robert Kennedy Jr. in the swing state of Arizona on Friday, and the band made its distaste — and lack of approval — known soon afterward. Only trouble is, the Trump camp said it has licensed use of that song and so many others from performing-rights company BMI.

In the waning days of the Nineties’ alt-rock revolution, just before major record labels turned forever away from left-of-center acts and toward more mainstream fare (coughBushcough) that forever made the world a duller place, Green Day and Smashing Pumpkins were two of the hottest young rock bands on the planet. And even though Green Day appealed more to punky skater types, and the Pumpkins fit in better with their sullen classmates on the other side of the detention hall, it wasn’t uncommon for teenagers in 1994 to have both Dookie...

This post contains spoilers for "Deadpool & Wolverine."
The end credits of "Deadpool & Wolverine" feature clips from past "X-Men" movies, set to Green Day's misunderstood break-up song "Good Riddance." Marvel Studios is prepping the merry mutants to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so the era of early "X-Men" films is over. But are these movies really worth celebrating?
Look, I like some of the "X-Men" movies on their own terms. "Logan" is a gem; I even think director James Mangold's first mutant rodeo, "The Wolverine," is underrated. "X2" is solid, despite being a much-less complex story than its source material, "God Loves, Man Kills" by Chris Claremont and Brent Anderson. I like the story about Charles (James McAvoy) and Erik (Michael Fassbender) buried inside "X-Men: First Class." And "X-Men: Days of Future Past" has some of the best silver screen superhero action ever.
But as I dive deeper into the comics,...

Like anyone else who’s enjoyed a superhero movie in the last 25 years, Ryan Reynolds is having a moment this week. Only for him, it is obviously much more so. An actor who appeared in multiple iterations of the genre’s earliest days in the 21st century—being at one time pegged as Green Lantern, Wade Wilson, and of course vampire hunter extraordinaire Hannibal King in New Line Cinema’s Blade franchise—Reynolds has seen the highs and lows of superhero cinema, and was rewarded for that enduring affection via the biggest hit of his career.
Deadpool & Wolverine is indeed a bemused, somewhat mocking, and ultimately earnest tribute to this genre’s most mercurial days in the early 2000s, back when Sony made their own Spider-Man movies, X-Men thrived at 20th Century Fox, 20th Century Fox for that matter existed, and no one but dedicated comic book readers knew who Tony Stark was.
