Halfback for the San Francisco 49ers (1952-1960), Minnesota Vikings (1961-1962), New York Giants (1963) and Detroit Lions (1964).
Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1981.

Led the NFL in rushing average (7.0) and all-purpose yards (1,731) in 1952.

He attended USC, Compton Junior College in Los Angeles, and the University of Washington.
In high school he set a national record in high hurdles and state records in low hurdles and long jump. He ran the 100-yard dash in 9.6 seconds.
Selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the 1st round (9th overall) of the 1952 NFL draft.
Inducted into the University of Washington Husky Hall of Fame in 1979 (inaugural class).
