When David Allen Singletary isn’t at a casting call or on set for a TV series, he’s pushing a cart of snacks down the aisle of a Southwest Airlines plane, asking passengers for their trash and identifying the emergency exits. He became a flight attendant on Valentine’s Day last year as TV studios halted production following the outbreak of Covid variant Omicron. L.A.-based actress Iris Liu makes ends meet by selling clothes on e-commerce site Depop. Every month is an adventure, says Chicago-based actor Al’Jaleel McGhee,...

It’s been the best of times, the worst of times, and undeniably busy times for Chris Rock.
In September, the comedian, writer, director and actor drew rave reviews for his dramatic turn in the fourth season of Fargo, opposite the likes of Jason Schwartzman, Ben Whishaw, Jessie Buckley and J. Nicole Brooks. His character, Loy Cannon, is a ’50s gangster in Missouri whose crime syndicate strikes up a war with the local Italian mob. A month after Fargo debuted, Rock returned to Saturday Night Live to host the sketch show, for the third time since his tenure as a cast member in the 1990s.
But that’s certainly not all. The executive producer and star of Saw reboot, Spiral—which will premiere next year—Rock has lately been working on a pair of scripts. One has been described as a female-centric take on Bad Lieutenant; the other is a...

Fargo Season 4 Episode 10
Fargo did itself a disservice with last week’s episode. By successfully presenting a small-scale, mostly self-contained story, it’s made this season’s sprawl and lack of focus more obvious. “Happy” is the penultimate episode of the season which means the season’s many threads need to start coalescing or ending, but unfortunately this doesn’t happen particularly gracefully. The timing on many of the episode’s plot points, like the introduction of the titular character Happy and Ethelrida’s reintroduction into the main story, feel like they are occurring far too late to make a significant impact.
Impact feels dulled right from the episode’s beginning, as we bizarrely begin with a time jump. Instead of having the Fadda brothers’ actions informed by their immediate grief over losing their mother, or Loy’s machinations influenced by the loss of Satchel,...

Fargo Season 4 Episode 8
Chatter is an essential part of Fargo’s appeal. The long speeches, filled with five-point words and specificity that good actors can make really make a meal of, has always been an essential part of the show’s DNA. However, this season’s monologues have started to fizzle, bogged down by repetitive themes and obvious allegories. Fargo’s talkativeness has somehow become a weak point in season 4, so much so that I’ve been longing for some big action set-pieces to shake things up.
Be careful what you wish for, I suppose. Fargo actually swings back hard in the other direction with its writing this week, anchored by J. Nicole Brooks and Timothy Olyphant delivering some of the season’s best speeches. “The Nadir” also delivers attempts at action set-pieces, but they feel slapdash and anti-climactic. If a conversation on a couch...
