Four years ago, it was announced that Ben Wheatley would be writing, directing, and executive producing Generation Z, a “hilarious, frightening, and political” series that would consist of six hour-long episodes that would “mix flesh-eating zombies into a story that satirizes how Brexit has divided the UK.” That project didn’t make it into production when it was originally supposed to because of the pandemic shutdown… but after making his latest film Meg 2: The Trench (you can read our review at This Link and check out our interview with the filmmaker Here), Wheatley has circled back around to Generation Z and is now knee-deep into filming it! To celebrate the fact that Generation Z is finally being made, Channel 4 has unveiled a batch of first look images, and you can check those out at the bottom of this article.

This heartfelt documentary shows us the world from the point of view of a migrant whose life was revolutionised by a school for the deaf in the UK
Edward Lovelace’s heartfelt and valuable documentary tells the story of Lawand Hamad Amin, a profoundly deaf Iraqi Kurdish boy who some eight years ago fled his home country with his family, found himself in the Calais “jungle”, and was helped across to the UK by a disability charity. Lawand was settled in Derby where he became a star pupil at the Royal School for the Deaf. Equipped with a hi-tech hearing aid and learning British Sign Language, he came to terms with the world for the first time, gaining a new relationship with his family and realising he was not the disruptive underachiever everyone thought but a really intelligent child. But then the Home Office indicated that Lawand’s family could...

First, the facts: there is, at the time of writing, no hard evidence to suggest that actor Rose Ayling-Ellis has joined the cast of Doctor Who. The BBC has made no announcement. Actor and deaf campaigner Ayling-Ellis has not publicly responded to the suggestion that her recent exit from EastEnders will be followed up by a trip in the Tardis, as the new companion to Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor.
The rumour emerged on Monday the 22nd of August after Doctor Who fan Owen (@WhovianLife) Tweeted “I wonder if this could be for #DoctorWho?” alongside a quote from Ayling-Ellis saying that she was currently banned from talking about her next job. Speaking to The Mirror about what she had lined up after leaving EastEnders, Ayling-Ellis said “You will find out more at the end of this month. I’m not allowed to say anything!”
Rose Ayling-Ellis has spoken on her new job role.

If you were busy watching England's rugby defeat last Saturday night, you missed a thrilling episode of Doctor Who, packed with moments every bit as blood-curdling as the sporting horror show. 'Under the Lake' might've suffered from a sketchily written supporting cast, but it scored with an abundance of atmosphere, great twists and some nifty sci-fi concepts.
This week, writer Toby Whithouse makes shrewd use of the two-parter format, positioning this follow-up episode as a prequel-of-sorts. But while the setting is (mostly) different, 'Before the Flood' is much of a muchness with its predecessor. It replicates many of its strengths, but also a few of its flaws.
Roughly half of the episode is set in the 1980s - a few hundred years before 'Under the Lake'. It's here that the Doctor rediscovers the spaceship left lurking in The Drum last week, and meets its oddball occupant, Prentis (Paul Kaye).

Warning! Spoilers: This post contains spoilers and speculation for the Doctor Who series nine episode “Under the Lake”.
Three episodes in and series nine Doctor Who is showing no signs of taking on water. “Under the Lake” is another tight, well paced episode with intriguing bad guys that are so much more than bug-eyed monsters in rubber suits. Base under siege stories are a classic Doctor Who theme and writer Toby Whithouse does not disappoint with this spooky tale of an underwater facility beset by murderous apparitions and an amoral corporate puppet.
Reminiscent of the tenth Doctor story “The Waters of Mars”, this episode features an intelligently written female commander who also happens to be deaf. Sophie Stone brings the character of Cass to vivid life, needing no sound to convey a range of emotion from determination to desperation. Her performance ensures that the commander never feels less than...

Series 9 of “Doctor Who” is in full swing. Now that the tone has been set for the year — friends can be enemies and enemies can be friends, the world is much more gray than black and white — it’s time to momentarily forget all that in favor of a ghost story with a twist. “Under the Lake” has the Tardis taking the Doctor and his companion to SeaLab 2119 yet another mining operation where things are more than what they seem. But maybe this time they should've brought the Ghostbusters. The Good • Twelve and Clara are back in action, as a team. Without the distractions of Missy or Danny Pink, the dynamic of the Doctor and his “Carer” is able to come back to the forefront. Twelve is still very bad at interaction with humans and Clara’s teacher background comes into play beautifully in the form of index cards for every occasion.

Three weeks into its latest run and, despite being filleted by critics for having its ratings trampled on by big rugby men, Doctor Who is ably demonstrating its power of enormous variety, jumping from a bonkers premiere to a bleak episode two, to - this week - a throughly traditional outing.
The 'base under siege' plot - our heroes and a motley crew trapped in an enclosed space - has been a Doctor Who staple for decades. One series, back in 1967, even replicated the formula for all but one story.
Since the show's resurgence, we've again seen countless examples of the type - 2005's 'Dalek', 2006's 'The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit', 2011's 'The Rebel Flesh / The Almost People', and more.
The latest script offering from Being Human creator Toby Whithouse, 'Under the Lake' also borrows the notion of an untranslatable language from 'The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit', while...

A base under siege, a Peter Andre reference, and a cracking slice of old-style Doctor Who. It's our spoiler-filled review of Under The Lake.
This review contains spoilers. Our spoiler-free review is here.
9.3 Under The Lake
"This safety message was brought to you by Vector Petroleum"
Right then. There’s an isolated base, with a diverse crew on board. There’s a threat, from which there’s no obvious sign of escape. There are corridors, which are set to be run down with as much determination as you would expect. And there’s the arrival of the Doctor and his companion, just as the fit is hitting the shan.
What do you mean you’ve seen it all before?
"You actually poo-pooed the ghost theory?"
For his first Doctor Who episode following series 7’s middling A Town Called Mercy, Being Human creator Toby Whithouse has dug deep into the stylings of classic Doctor Who.

Look out everyone, the attack eyebrows are back! Yes, after the teaser trailer revealed during the show’s Comic-Con panel last month, here comes the first proper, full trailer, brimming with more monster-laden goodness. As seems usual for the Doctor these days, he’s back adventuring with Jenna Coleman’s Clara Oswald, and confronting all manner of terrifying galactic threats. There’s more mischief promised from Missy (Michelle Gomez), the Zygons, a sprinkling of Daleks and, of course, some new creatures and places we’ve yet to encounter.Game Of Thrones’ Maisie Williams is the standout again, but the likes of Reece Shearsmith, Rebecca Front, Rufus Hound, Paul Kaye, Elaine Tan, Neet Mohan, Bethany Black, Paul Courtenay Hyu, Joivan Wade and Sophie Stone are all aboard for the usual batch of running, screaming, planning, and speechifying. Things kick off on September 19 with two-parter The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar,...

If you had told us, back in Dennis Pennis’ mid-1990s spoof interviewing heyday, that his alter ego Paul Kaye would one day be starring in a TV adaptation of Game Of Thrones and the new Doctor Who series, we’d have likely said, ‘Doctor Who isn’t even on! And there Is no show of that one book by that fantasy guy! Begone, time-travelling demon!’ But we would be sadly wrong (except maybe about the time-travelling bit), as Got veteran Kaye is indeed part of a sprawling cast for the two-part launch for the new series of Who.The BBC has announced that the ninth series of the show – at least since the Doctor came back to screens in 2005 – is now shooting at its usual Cardiff locale, with Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman once more starring. Kaye, Thoros in Thrones, will be one of the main guest stars for the two-parter alongside Morven Christie,...

Filming has begun on the ninth series of Doctor Who with a two-part script by Toby Whithouse.
Whithouse's two-parter will be directed by Daniel O'Hara (Being Human).
As previously announced, Game of Thrones actor Paul Kaye will play a guest part, while additional cast includes The Missing's Arsher Ali, Grantchester's Morven Christie and Torchwood's Colin McFarlane.
"As a kid of the 1970's, the two shows you always watched were Top of the Pops and Doctor Who, they were unmissable," said Kaye.
"I actually wrote a song called 'Looking for Davros' in my first punk band and I sang it like a demented Dalek. I got to present Totp back in the mid '90s and landing this role in Doctor Who completes the dream double.
"Peter is a perfect Doctor and I'm loving every minute of the experience, even the five hours in make-up. What a treat...
