The three-hour Fox telecast, which went over well with critics, was polished, moved at a nice clip, featured talent from decades of TV and, in contrast to the monologue drama at the Golden Globes just eight days earlier, saw host Anthony Anderson lauded for his efficient and warm navigation of what is so often a thankless job.
“Anthony was undeniably the host with the most,” said Allison Wallach, Fox Entertainment’s president of unscripted programming. “Those cast reunions and mind-blowing sets were beyond compare and the winner speeches were filled with heart and humor … and on time, thanks to the watchful and hilarious Mama Doris.”

Dionne Warwick, Billy Crystal, Queen Latifah, Barry Gibb and Renée Fleming have been set as the five arts figures due to be celebrated at the 46th annual Kennedy Center Honors, with a ceremony taking place Dec. 3 in Washington, D.C.
The ceremony will take place Dec. 3 and be filmed for later broadcast airing on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
Four of the five honorees hail from the world of music, although Queen Latifah has shifted her focus toward acting in recent years. The ratio is not an uncommon one for the Kennedy Center Honors: Last year’s ceremony honored U2, Amy Grant, Tania León and Gladys Knight, leaving George Clooney the odd acting man out.
No date was announced for the broadcast, but the 2022 ceremony also took place in the first week of December and was broadcast during the last week of that month. The show will be produced by...

Taraji P. Henson has an exciting new role.
The former Empire star and Academy Award nominee will star as Miss Hannigan in NBC's Annie Live!, premiering Thursday, December 2.
“Carol Burnett, who brought Miss Hannigan to life in the classic 1982 movie, is someone I have studied and idolized as far back as I can remember,” Henson said in a statement.
“So when the opportunity came to me to join NBC and this incredible group of producers, I jumped! Carol, I hope to do you proud!”
“When we decided to bring back NBC’s holiday musical tradition, we were looking for something that was critically acclaimed and universally beloved — and while that’s definitely the case with Annie, it absolutely applies to Taraji as well,” added said Susan Rovner, Chairman of Entertainment Content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming.

NBC is getting a New Deal for Christmas, as it gets back into the live TV musical business with “Annie Live!” Set to air during the holidays, “Annie” also represents a homecoming of sorts for producers Bob Greenblatt and Neil Meron.
Greenblatt, of course, is the former NBC Entertainment chairman who found success in bringing live musicals to the network, starting with “The Sound of Music Live!” in 2013. Meron and the late Craig Zadan were the producers behind that special, which was a tremendous hit — averaging 21.8 million viewers in live+3 ratings. It spawned follow-up events including “Peter Pan Live!” in 2014, “The Wiz Live!” in 2015, “Hairspray Live!” in 2016 and “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” on Easter in 2018.
“Annie Live!” landed at NBC after being shopped to all four major broadcast networks. “NBC is where we started these live musicals and I still have so much affection for it,” Greenblatt said.

“World of Dance” has been canceled after four seasons at NBC, TheWrap has confirmed.
The Jennifer Lopez-produce dance competition series concluded its most recent season last August when the teen trio Mdc 3 was named champions. The show was absent from NBC’s recently announced summer lineup, and there are no current plans for it to return to the network.
The series, from Universal Television Alternative Studio and Nuyorican Productions, puts individual and group dancers from a variety of genres and styles up against each other for the title of “Best Dancer in the World” and a $1 million prize.
In addition to her role as executive producer, Lopez also acts as one of the series’ judges, alongside Derek Hough and Ne-yo. Scott Evans hosted the two most recent seasons, replacing Jenna Dewan of Seasons 1 and 2.

The “Grease” prequel movie “Summer Lovin'” has found a new director at Paramount, “Hearts Beat Loud” and “The Hero” director Brett Haley, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Leah McKendrick wrote the script for the film that is being produced by Temple Hill and PictureStart. Haley is also taking over for John August, who was attached to direct the prequel back in 2019 when the project was first reported.
The prequel film will be inspired by the “Grease” song “Summer Nights,” in which Danny and Sandy separately tell their friends about the summer fling they shared prior to the events of the musical.

For three seasons, no reality TV show has come close to matching the buzz, excitement and cool factor of Fox’s “The Masked Singer.” And for good reason. Where else on television can you see well-known celebrities dressing up in elaborate food/animal/creature costumes and singing their hearts out for the ultimate prize of the Golden Mask? However, rival shows like “The Voice,” “American Idol” and “America’s Got Talent” still have a one-up on “The Masked Singer” when it comes to the exhilaration of live episodes. That’s when the voting power switches over to the fans and truly anything can happen up on the stage. Gold Derby recently asked “The Masked Singer” director whether they’ve ever considered going live, and his answer has us even more excited for future seasons.

It’s good news, bad news for the Best Competition Program Emmy contenders. The bad news is that there will only be five nominees, instead of the usual six, in accordance with the new rules tying the number of nominees to the number of category submissions. The good news is that there is still technically an open slot since 10-time champ “The Amazing Race” is missing the Emmys for the first time ever.
And if our odds are on point, that slot will go to first-time nominee “The Masked Singer,” which is sitting in fourth place at the moment. Two-time defending champ “RuPaul’s Drag Race” leads the way, followed by four-time champ “The Voice,” 2019 nominee “Nailed It!” and 2010 winner “Top Chef.” That leaves “American Ninja Warrior,” which has been nominated the past four years, just out of it in sixth.

The industry’s first directing pipeline program for unscripted shows has set its 2019-2020 class, helping to create equal representation behind the scenes on alternative series.
The Alternative Directors Program was launched two years ago to give experienced female and ethnically diverse directors the opportunity to expand their repertoire of alternative formats and complex directing styles. The ultimate goal is hiring them as show directors on an NBC or Universal Television Alternative Studios series.
This year, the program directors will rotate through two to three alternative shows across the network’s daytime, primetime and late night line-ups. During their tenure on each show, they will shadow the respective show directors through prep and production, with the goal of directing a meaningful segment on one of the shows they shadow. The show directors will also serve as their mentors and advocates.

The Cma Awards have had the most consistent hosting situation of any music awards show in television, but 11 years after installing Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood as the reliable faces of the telecast, even ABC and the Country Music Association have decided it’s time for a switch. Come Nov. 13, Underwood will return for year 12, but Paisley is exiting, to be replaced in 2019 by the combination of Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire as “special guest hosts” alongside Underwood.
The move is surprising not least of all because McEntire has been a longtime on-again, off-again host of the rival Academy of Country Music Awards, going back to 1986. McEntire most recently hosted the ACMs out of Las Vegas this past April, for the second year in a row — a role she presumably won’t be stepping back into in 2020, unless the CMAs and ACMs are much more into sharing than previously imagined.

The Country Music Association made the announcement today. The awards show broadcasts live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 8-11 pm Et on ABC.
“It’s an incredible honor to welcome Carrie, Reba and Dolly to the Cma Awards stage this year,” says Sarah Trahern, Cma chief executive officer. “In addition to awarding the year’s best and brightest in the genre, The 53rd Annual Cma Awards will celebrate the legacy of women within Country Music, and we couldn’t think of a more dynamic group of women to host the show.”

Angel Dumott Schunard’s swan song in “Rent” is the double-entendre infused “Contact,” a high-concept number that features the whole company. The song begins seemingly just as a representation of the various couples’ sex lives but soon turns into a heartbreaking solo as Angel enters a fever dream and then dies of complications from HIV/AIDS. Jonathan Larson originally conceived the number to sound as a club track, which meant relying on pre-recorded music, rather than the live orchestra, during the stage productions. Since the goal was to honor but also enhance that formative vision, the team behind Fox’s live broadcast staging took the musical’s lead when it came to utilizing a single, central set piece. But to better focus audience attention on Angel’s state of mind, the number opens on a close-up of her face, punctuating the emotional dichotomy of her desire to live with her dark fate.

The Emmys are looking like the Grammys this year — at least in the Best Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) category. Last week, Beyonce released her concert film “Homecoming” on Netflix, giving the streaming service a third Emmy contender from a massive music star. Its first two, lest we forget, are Bruce Springsteen‘s “Springsteen on Broadway” and Taylor Swift‘s “Reputation Stadium Tour” concert film. Will this category come down to who was literally music to voters’ ears?
Of the trio — who have 53 Grammys between them — only Swift has won an Emmy before, taking home Best Original Interactive Program for “Amex Unstaged: Taylor Swift Experience” in 2015. However, that was a juried category (YouTube’s “Emma Approved” also won), so that means Swift has yet to win a competitive Emmy race. “Reputation,” which dropped on New Year’s Eve on Netflix, is arguably the least hyped about of these three films at the moment,...

Paramount Studios was blessed with “Seasons of Love” as Fox’s live broadcast of Jonathan Larson’s Rent took the stage at Deadline’s The Contenders Emmys. Executive producers Adam Siegel, Julie Larson and Alex Rudzinski as well as stars Vanessa Hudgens and Emmy nominated actor Brandon Victor Dixon (via Skype) talked about bringing the musical to live TV, how Brennin Hunt’s injury during production did not hinder the event and honoring Jonathan Larson’s legacy.
“Expect the unexpected is the mantra,” Rudzinski told Deadline’s Pete Hammond.
As a result of Hunt’s injury, Fox aired a full dress rehearsal with the finale of the musical being live. Even so, that didn’t take away from the live aspect of the show. Rudzinski said that this event blends movies, TV and theatrical to create a one-of-a-kind energy that is like opening night and closing night of a show.

NBC is not proceeding with Hair Live!, which had been scheduled to air May 19 as the network’s next live musical. There are no plans for the counter-culture classic to air at a later date, though the network remains committed to live musicals and plans to return to the type of broad-appeal productions that launched its live musical franchise.
“Live musicals are a part of this network’s DNA and we are committed to continuing that tradition with the right show at the right time, Paul Telegdy and George Cheeks, Co-Chairmen, NBC Entertainment, said in a joint statement. “Since these shows are such enormous undertakings, we need titles that have a wide appeal and we’re in the process of acquiring the rights to a couple of new shows that we’re really excited about.”

Sorry, but the Age of Aquarius will not be dawning after all: NBC has scrapped its plans for a live musical presentation of Hair, TVLine has learned.
Hair Live!, as it was titled, was slated to air Sunday, May 19, with Emmy-winning director Alex Rudzinski (Grease: Live, Jesus Christ Superstar) adapting the 1960s counterculture classic along with Broadway revival director Diane Paulus. But the network is now shelving that production and turning its attention to more “broad-based, family musicals,” a network source tells TVLine.

Alfonso Cuarón has triumphed at the Directors Guild of America Awards, making the “Roma” auteur the official frontrunner as we near the Academy Awards in just a few weeks. There’s significant overlap between the two voting groups, and the DGA winner tends to be similarly awarded by the Academy — their selections have diverged only seven times since 1949. Cuarón previously won the award for “Gravity,” for which he also won the Oscar.
Here’s the full list of winners:
Feature Film
Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born”

“Roma” filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron won one of the top prizes at Saturday night’s 71st Directors Guild of America Awards, beating out Bradley Cooper for “A Star Is Born,” Spike Lee for “BlacKkKlansman,” Adam McKay for “Vice,” and Peter Farrelly for “Green Book” for the feature film award.
Bo Burnham was also among the guild’s big winners, taking home the first-time feature film prize for his coming-of-age drama “Eighth Grade.” He was up against Cooper, Carlos Lopez Estrada for “Blindspotting,” Matthew Heineman for “A Private War,” and Boots Riley for “Sorry to Bother You.”
While Cooper lost out on both awards, two other actors-turned-directors were victorious: Ben Stiller and Bill Hader. Stiller won in the movies for television and limited series category for his prison-break drama “Escape at Dannemora,” while Hader won for comedy series for “Barry,” which he also toplines.

The 71st Annual Directors Guild of America Awards will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, with awards to be given out in 11 categories across film and television.
Alfonso Cuaron is the runaway favorite to take home his second feature film DGA Award for “Roma,” which would set him up for the corresponding Oscar since the two bodies have only ever disagreed seven times in 70 years. He previously won both for “Gravity” (2013). Spike Lee (“BlacKkKlansman”) is in second place in our odds and would be the first black winner in DGA history.
Last year, Cuaron’s friend Guillermo del Toro took home the DGA and Oscar for “The Shape of Water.”

On the TV side, “The Americans” is predicted to bag another farewell prize, while it’s a tight one between “Atlanta” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for comedy honors.

Jean-Marc Vallee might get a twin win at Saturday’s Directors Guild of America Awards. With 82/25 odds in our predictions, the “Sharp Objects” director is the favorite to take home the TV movie/miniseries prize for the second year in a row, but he ought to watch out for Ben Stiller (“Escape at Dannemora”).
Vallee prevailed last year for “Big Little Lies,” and like with that series, he helmed every episode of “Sharp Objects” as well. He’d be the third person to win this category twice after Lamont Johnson and Jay Roach.
Mick Jackson holds the record with four victories, for “Indictment: The McMartin Trial” (1995), “Tuesdays with Morrie” (1999), “Live with Baghdad” (2002) and “Temple Grandin” (2010). Joseph Sargent has three DGA Awards, for “The Marcus-Nelson Murders” (1973), “Something the Lord Made” (2004) and, in a tie with George C. Wolfe for “Lackawanna Blues,” “Warm Springs” (2005).
