Title: Septien Writer-director: Michael Tully Starring: Robert Longstreet, Onur Tukel, Michael Tully, Mark Darby Robinson, Rachel Korine, Jim Willingham A unique slice of Southern Gothic that premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, Septien is sort of the embodiment of what more American indie film should be doing and trying – which is to say identifying universal themes or feelings worthwhile of exploration for the creators, and then coming at them in a roundabout or subversive manner. An off-kilter dramatic mystery that trades in low-level mischievousness, and a kind of quietly comedic snapshot of deep-fried familial dysfunction, Septien is the ultimate chameleonic cinematic experience — it is chiefly what one wishes it to be,...

I had done a few write ups on Septien months back so I was a little familiar with it but when I got the chance to see this movie it has definitely become one of my favorites in 2011.
Septien is written and directed by Michael Tully who also stars in the film as Cornelius Rawlings, a long lost brother who suddenly shows up at his family home after missing for 18 years. He comes home to three “unique” brothers who are all as different as day and night. Older brother, Ezra (Robert Longstreet) who suffers from Ocd has made it a point to become the “mother figure” welcomes Cornelius home with open arms as does other brother Amos (Onur Tukel) who has become an artist of sorts but all he paints is obscene, pornographic, twisted. Demonic art, I mean you can’t think up this crazy stuff on your wildest trip...

Director: Michael Tully Writer: Michael Tully Starring: Michael Tully, Robert Longstreet, Onur Tukel, Rachel Korine, Mark Darby Robinson, John Maringouin, Jim Willingham Eighteen years after disappearing without a trace, a man who looks remarkably like Jesus Christ donning sunglasses and a tan hoodie returns to his family's farm. The parents of the bearded man -- whose name is Cornelius (Michael Tully) -- died a while ago; but his two siblings, Ezra (Robert Longstreet) and Amos (Onur Tukel), are still living as eccentric slackers on the family’s backwoods property. Ezra, the more effeminate brother, plays the role of the doting mother of the household, dutifully cooking, cleaning, praying and basically just taking care of things. Amos is the token artist of the Rawlings clan; he wishes that he could be gay but he thinks his gayness is too repressed because their father was homophobic and now he is just too old to become gay.

The South by Southwest Film Festival announced its feature film line-up Wednesday, piling heaps of cinematic goodness on an already stellar program that includes Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, Duncan Jones’ Source Code, Ti West’s The Innkeepers, Conan O’Brien’s tour documentary, and the latest Simon Pegg-Nick Frost comedy, Paul, with Seth Rogen.
Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) returns to the festival with her latest film, Red Riding Hood starring Amanda Seyfried, after the writer-director spoke on a screenwriting panel in 2009.
Plus a few favorites from the Sundance Film Festival last month, like Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, Morgan Spurlock’s The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, and Max Winkler’s Ceremony.
I’m extremely excited, even if I’m already having flashbacks to intense sleep deprivation. Like the last two years, I’ll be on the ground covering as much of the festival as I can within the packed 9 days of screenings,...
