A young woman opens her heart to the passenger sitting next to her in this unfunny adaptation of a Sophie Kinsella novel
It’s hardly a secret, more of a golden rule, but someone here has clearly forgotten that comedy has to be funny. Instead, Elise Duran’s adaptation of a Sophie Kinsella chick-lit novel gives us a kind of unromantic noncom, a movie with no believable characters and worrying few laughs.
The heroine is supposed to relatable and real, a hapless, klutzy twentysomething chaotically muddling along, trying to figure out life. The problem is that she’s instantly recognisable from a dozen glittery, pink-jacketed books and romantic films in which female characters drink rosé straight out of the bottle.

“The world works in such mysterious ways”
Directed by Elise Duran and based on Sophie Kinsella’s book of the same name, Can You Keep a Secret? tells the story of Emma Corrigan (Alexandra Daddario) who is a Junior Marketing Assistant for Panda, an organic food company based in New York City. On a return flight from Chicago, where Emma does not impress a client during a sales meeting that could’ve led to the dream promotion, she wallows in her failure. Spotting this, a flight attendant feels sorry for her and bumps her up to first class
Sitting cosily in first class, she now decides to have a drink or three when a handsome stranger (who looks like Superman) takes the empty seat next to her. Not too long into the journey the plane starts to take on some unwanted turbulence and Emma feels like this could be it.

Thinking they’re about to crash, Emma spills her secrets to a stranger on a plane. At least, she thought he was a stranger…Until she later meets Jack, her company’s young CEO, who now knows every humiliating detail about her.
Based on the 2003 New York Times bestseller by Sophie Kinsella, Can You Keep a Secret? is essentially a by-the-numbers rom-com about mixed messages, crossed-wires and overly complicated relationships. It’s also obvious from the get-go where this film will end up. Yet none of that stops Can You Keep a Secret? being a hugely entertaining romp. Mainly due to the chemistry of leads Alexandra Daddario and Tyler Hoechlin.

The round-up returns once again! With so many independent releases hitting theaters here in early September, it’s almost impossible not to have to play catch-up like this. Joining that documentary are the horror efforts Depraved and Haunt, along with the doc Liam Gallagher: As It Was, as well as the indie comedy Can You Keep a Secret? It’s quite the group! How many of them are worth your time and money? Do any especially stand out from the pack? Time to dive in and answer just that… Can You Keep A Secret? Romantic comedies used to be big business. Hollywood loved to put them out. Now? Not so much, and it’s a shame. It has become...

Director Elise Duran’s “Can You Keep A Secret?” makes it clear from the very first moments the animated opening credits play over the Go-Go’s “Our Lips Are Sealed” that it’s going to be a sweet, if not satisfactory time spent in the golden-hour glow of this romantic comedy’s world. Based on Sophie Kinsella’s book, her first standalone novel after the success of her “Confessions of a Shopaholic” series, . That said, it lacks a sense of uniqueness to set it apart from other female-centric book-to-screen adaptations.

Laverne Cox is known for breaking barriers in Hollywood but even she was surprised to be breaking into the music charts with her single “Welcome Home.”

Cox elaborated on the backstory behind the track, which she created in collaboration with Smirnoff to promote Pride Month in June. “The fun thing is that basically Smirnoff took the dialogue from the commercial that I did with them for World Pride and set it to a dance beat and released it and the DJs are now playing it at the club,” Cox said. “So it’s no. 6 on the Billboard Dance Club charts this week and all the proceeds from the song go to the Transgender Law Center.”

Ficto launches with 20 series currently in production, available to consumers early next year. Newly launched Lionsgate India is to remake two high-concept international properties in collaboration with Azure Entertainment and Lionsgate affiliate Globalgate. The two remakes — the first titles under the new partnership — are of hit Mexican comedy “Instructions Not Included” and South Korean action thriller “The Terror Live.”
“Instructions Not Included” (2013) was produced by Lionsgate’s Pantelion Films and became the highest-grossing Spanish-language film in North America. “Instructions” has already been remade in France by Vendome/Mars Films as “Demain Tout Commence,” and is being developed in other territories.
Azure and Globalgate will also produce an Indian version of “The Terror Live,” which was a $36 million hit for Lotte Entertainment in 2013 and is under discussion for multiple other remake deals. Azure and Lionsgate India are currently finalizing the writers and directors for the two projects.
Headed by former Reliance MediaWorks executive Sunir Kheterpal, Azure is backed by The Three Sisters: Institutional Office.

Report by Creative Industries Federation highlights the difficulties facing freelancers.
The Creative Industries Federation published a report today (17th July) which aims to improve the working lives of freelancers in Britain’s creative industries.
The document draws on evidence from 700 freelancers and around 50 organisations that use them. According to the report, 47% of workers in the creative industries are freelance, compared to 15% across the UK workforce as a whole.
Actress Imelda Staunton spoke at the launch of the new initiative at the National Theatre in London this morning. Samuel West, Stephen Frears, Al Kennedy and Sophie Kinsella have also backed the report.
The report highlights practical issues, from tax returns to affordable workspace, where government could act to make a difference. It also challenges the sector to tackle bad practices such as late payments and the prevalence of unpaid work.
It also suggests that last week’s Taylor review into the ‘gig economy’ did not take into account...

"Something Borrowed" does not go into its opening weekend with a whole lot of goodwill. Fans of the best-selling Emily Giffin novel have not been shy expressing their displeasure with the casting of stars Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson, and critics have largely panned the movie -- earning it a 35 out of 100 on review aggregate Metacritic and an even more dismal 15% on RottenTomatoes.com.
Film adaptations rarely live up to the books that inspire them, even under the best of circumstances, and few genres seem to highlight this more than the unfortunately named "chick lit."
Since "Borrowed" seems to be headed for straight the genre's Fail bin, we've come up with an alternative viewing list of the female-driven books that ended up besting expectations -- and, for balance's sake, a few stinkers from the undistinguished cannon of chic lit adaptions gone awry.

Who wore Christian Lacroix better?
Sophie Kinsella, author of the Shopaholic book series, first wore this Christian Lacroix pre-fall 2009 dress on June 2 in London, to the Glamour Woman Of The Year Awards, where the author paired the look with dark red satin pointy pumps — but that wasn’t the last time we saw this floral frock! Different season, same dress! Eva Mendes opted for this pretty floral number on Jan. 30 in La with a pair of tan platform peep toes, which matched the print of the dress perfectly! While you may think spring when you see florals, the color and the material make it the perfect floral frock for fall and winter! Eva wins this one for me because I thought her shoe choice was much better than Sophie’s. Who do you think wore it better?

Over Christmas vacation I read a book by Confessions of a Shopaholic author Sophie Kinsella. Whatever, don't judge me, I was on vacation and read it in like 2 hours while watching football in the background. And while the book wasn't "good" by any actual measure, it was entertaining and funny and kept me occupied. Which, really, is all we ask from romantic comedies, which helps explains why Kinsella's work keeps getting adapted despite the general failure of the Confessions of a Shopaholic movie. THR reports that Andy Fickman will be directing the movie adaptation of Kinsella's The Undomestic Goddess, about a high-powered London attorney who somehow winds up as a maid in an English country estate. No, it doesn't make any sense, but Kinsella's female characters seem to usually be as ditzy as they are endearing, so it sounds plausible in her world. The Devil Wears Prada screenwriter Aline Brosh...
