2023 was a tumultuous year for television, but amid the turmoil was some standout horror programming that celebrates the genre’s versatility, from “The Fall of the House of Usher” to “Swarm.”
The television landscape grows increasingly proliferated as streaming services continue to spawn and transform like hordes of zombies. There have never been more places to consume content, which in itself can be both exciting and overwhelming for audiences. Horror has been warmly embraced by television and the prospect of a graphic genre program is no longer the gambit that it used to be. Programming from across the world collectively taps into the universal fears that get under the audience’s skin, many of which become even more intense through extended binge-watch sessions. There’s something for everyone when it comes to 2023’s eclectic horror series, whether it’s killer dolls in the White House, inspired reimaginings of Edgar Allan Poe,...

Creepshow’s scrappy brand of buoyant and bloody B-horror anthology storytelling covers a wide range that fluctuates between pulpy and plodding.
Anthology series, horror or otherwise, have never been more popular and yet Creepshow has always stood out as more than just a standard horror anthology. Creepshow aims to frighten and fascinate like other anthology horror. However, it models itself off of the pulpy horror “comix” of the ‘60s and ‘70s that are just as interested in camp and B-movie bliss. This horror subgenre isn’t for everyone, but Creepshow has done an excellent job at capturing the old-fashioned energy of the Creepshow feature films and cautionary comics from a simpler time. Shudder’s Creepshow has been going strong for three seasons, even with some animated installments along the way, and its new fourth season is the perfect way to celebrate this holiday season.

Of all the shows Mike Flanagan and his production company Intrepid Pictures made for Netflix – The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and the upcoming The Fall of the House of the Usher – the Christopher Pike-inspired The Midnight Club was the only one that was designed to be an ongoing series. The finale left the story wide open to continue… so of course Netflix went ahead and cancelled it. But Flanagan had said that if the show wasn’t renewed, he would go online and spill all of the details on what they had planned for season 2. True to his word, Flanagan took to Tumblr to reveal the Midnight Club season 2 plans soon after Netflix confirmed the show is over.

Mike Flanagan’s latest Netflix series, The Midnight Club is an adaptation of not just one Christopher Pike novel, but many of the prolific 80s and 90s YA author’s works. In the past, there has been only one adaptation: a 1996 made-for-tv movie of Fall Into Darkness starring Tatyana Ali and Jonathan Brandis (available for free on YouTube).
The series, by comparison, will see filmed adaptations of not just the titular book, but also The Wicked Heart, Gimme a Kiss, See You Later, Witch, Road to Nowhere, and The Eternal Enemy
So what do you need to know about the books before you dive into the series? Let’s break it down!

In 2017, a little-known Australian author published an unforgettable book about dying — not death, mind you, but dying. Diagnosed with Stage IV cancer, Cory Taylor’s memoir isn’t about how she “fights” for her life or “battles” a disease; it’s about grounding an experience that, one way or another, we’ll all share. “Dying: A Memoir” acknowledges the dread and sadness surrounding our ultimate fate, but the author steers her story toward advocacy over despair. She wishes more people could acknowledge the simple reality of death with empathy, acceptance, and an open dialogue. After all, it’s far more acceptable to reject news of a loved one’s damning diagnosis — “You’ll beat this thing” or “Don’t talk like that” — than to face the fear together via a real, practical exchange. And for those soon departing, spending your last days hoping and searching for a miracle isn’t...

The WGA East’s second Showrunner Academy gets underway today, with the 31-member class taking part in a program designed to support television writer-producers, upper-level writers and new show creators in honing the skills necessary to become successful showrunners and TV industry leaders.
The Academy, which provides instruction from current showrunners and other industry professionals on a wide range of topics, is led by Diana Son and Frank Pugliese.
“Being a showrunner is so much more than being the creative voice of the show,” Son said in a statement. “It’s also managing a multimillion-dollar endeavor with over 100 employees. We’re bringing in accomplished and experienced showrunners who’re willing to share the breadth of their experience – the good, bad and the ugly – so new showrunners can have a head start on figuring out what kind of showrunner they’re going to be.

Netflix and Mike Flanagan introduce “The Midnight Club” this Halloween, a series adaptation of Christopher Pike‘s 1994 novel that will also adapt other Pike stories. “The Midnight Club” is set to premiere on October 7, and Empire Online has just shared a new image along with fresh insights from Flanagan.
“One of the big things we assumed was that the younger viewers could handle scares,” Flanagan tells Empire, indicating that the terror of his latest series hasn’t been toned down for a younger audience. He says of Pike’s work in general, “He wrote some pretty advanced stuff for his younger readers, and it was not at all uncommon for his teenage characters to die, pretty shockingly. His books were full of things I found really exciting and thrilling and dark.”
“So I became a bit of an addict,” Flanagan adds.

Kate Siegel has her first chance at an Emmy nomination for Best Movie/Limited Actress for her riveting performance as Erin Greene in Netflix’s “Midnight Mass,” directed by Mike Flanagan. Watch our recent interview with the actress.
The seven-episode horror series tells of a tiny island community rocked by the arrival of two men — the disgraced Riley (Zach Gilford) returning after spending four years in prison for killing a teenage girl in a drunk driving accident, and Father Paul Hill (Hamish Linklater), the new priest at St. Patrick’s Church. Siegel plays Erin, a former girlfriend of Riley’s who works on the island as a teacher and is expecting a child. The actress has been terrific in the film “Hush” and the limited series “The Haunting of Hill House,” both also directed by Siegel’s husband Flanagan, but her lead performance in “Midnight Mass” is her best yet,...

Absentia is a ghost story from director Mike Flanagan, which has received praise from many film critics. Toby McCasker at Fangoria has called the film disturbing and terrifying and now, Phase 4 Films will be making this title available through a video-on-demand feature July 1st, 2011. As a sidebar, why is this format called video-on-demand, when the delivery comes via digital? The film industry continues to mystify this reviewer. Meanwhile, a wife tries to move on from her unhappy marriage, as her husband has been missing for seven years. Are those strange sounds coming from a recess in Tricia's backyard her husband saying goodbye, or something much more sinister? Fans will have to watch this film July 1st to find out, when Absentia becomes available through various cable providers.

I ran across Mike Flanagan's Absentia on Facebook a while back and we've been following it ever since. This is what we call "the little film that could". It's a Kick Starter funded project that has actually made it to the finish line and it looks like it's going to be a killer movie, judging by the poster, images below and trailer . The film stars Katie Parker, Courtney Bell, David Levine, Morgan Brown, Justin Gordon, James Flanagan, and everybody's favorite Abe Sapien and friend of GeekTyrant, Doug Jones. Check out the new images below courtesy of Dread Central.

Case in point ...
We had the opportunity to screen Absentia (review here) recently, and believe us when we tell you it's like a breath of fresh air. Proof positive that with a good director and cast and a smart script, you do not need a massive budget to make a good movie. In fact, Absentia is one of the few fan-funded via Kickstarter flicks that we've come across to actually get made.
