Valid Reasons Kung Fu Panda 4 Didn't Live Up To Expectations
Image
Before its March 2024 release, Kung Fu Panda 4 was one of the year's most anticipated movie sequels. The Kung Fu Panda franchise is one of DreamWorks' crowning achievements. The first three movies are still beloved by their passionate fanbase. The mix of humor, heart, striking visuals, and fun action has viewers constantly returning to the trilogy. So, it was rather disappointing for fans to see the fourth installment - released eight years after the third film and failing to live up to the hype.

Despite a "fresh" Rotten Tomatoes score and impressive box office numbers, Kung Fu Panda 4 couldn't match the incredible quality set by the trilogy. The animation, action sequences, and Jack Black's energetic voice performance were rewarding. However, when analyzing this sequel further, there are several reasons why it failed to live up to many people's high expectations.

Awkwafina's Kung Fu Panda 4 Character Explained Will She Return For A Sequel?
Image
Awkwafina shines as corsac fox Zhen in Kung Fu Panda 4, showing off her comedic and dramatic voice acting skills. Zhen's character arc mirrors Po's journey in the first film, proving her worth as the new Dragon Warrior. The chemistry between Awkwafina and Jack Black in recording sessions adds an electric energy to the movie.

Awkwafina has a key role in Kung Fu Panda 4, and she could very well become a returning character in the series. The Kung Fu Panda movie franchise was a surprise success when the first film premiered in 2008. Kung Fu Panda was not based on any existing IP and the combination of martial arts and unfamiliar animal protagonists did not guarantee that the film would be a success. None of that mattered, however, as Kung Fu was a massive commercial and critical smash-hit and has led to a huge franchise with sequels, spinoffs, games, and more.

‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ Blu-ray Review

Stars: Jack Black, Awkwafina, Viola Davis, Bryan Cranston, James Hong, Ian McShane, Ke Huy Quan, Ronny Chieng, Lori Tan Chinn, Dustin Hoffman | Written by Jonathan Aibel, Glenn Berger, Darren Lemke | Directed by Mike Mitchell, Stephanie Ma Stine

Cuddly Kung Fu master Po the Panda returns to the big screen for a fourth instalment of the animated action comedy franchise, eight years after Kung Fu Panda 3. Unfortunately, it’s fair to say that the law of diminishing returns has very much kicked in, because while the film is entirely amiable, it doesn’t quite deliver the same punch, and frequently feels like it’s going through the motions.

The film begins in the Valley of Peace, where Po (Jack Black) is content with his life as the legendary Dragon Warrior, occasionally defeating the odd villain with his sweet kung-fu skills and using his standing in the community to open a tofu-and-noodle shop.

Every Main Villain From The Kung Fu Panda Movies Ranked
Image
In American animation, talking animal movies are a dime-a-dozen, but the "Kung Fu Panda" series is a gem. A big part of the appeal comes from the charming lead performance of Jack Black as Dragon Warrior Po (read /Film's interview with Black on the "Kung Fu Panda" circuit here). Another reason is the Wuxia-inspired action, where the bouncy CGI complements the characters' acrobatics and allows filmmakers to execute "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" style wire-fu with no need for actual wires.

Then there's the other secret ingredient: the villains. In each of the four films made so far (with the "Kung Fu Panda 4" box office making it likely another chapter won't be far behind), Po faces a new adversary, one with a new power he must overcome while also advancing on his own spiritual journey. Pretty typical hero's journey stuff, but like in martial arts, it's all about the proper execution.

How To Watch Kung Fu Panda 4 At Home
Image
DreamWorks Animation has the best animated franchises, delivering consistently good, theatrically-released franchises that are unique within the animation landscape. One of their best ones is "Kung Fu Panda," a franchise with some of the best fight sequences in animation, and one of the few instances where an all-star stunt voice cast isn't detrimental to the films' quality.

Even if "Kung Fu Panda 4" doesn't reach the heights of the first two films, it still isn't without redeeming qualities. As our own Ethan Anderton wrote in his review for /Film, "This movie still has plenty of ways to entertain, from the eye-popping animated action sequences to Jack Black's pitch-perfect portrayal of Po, not to mention a stellar score from composer Hans Zimmer and his composing partner and collaborator, Steve Mazzaro."

This is a fun movie with a fantastic cast led by Jack Black and Awkwafina, starting what could be a new trilogy in the franchise.

However, when analyzing this sequel further, there are several reasons why it failed to live up to many people's high expectations.

Kung Fu Panda 4 review – Jack Black and Awkwafina in hurricane of slapstick more miss than hit
Jack Black
The lead pair make a brilliant double act, but the franchise has run out of its signature sweetness and charm

The cuddly kung fu master is back. Jack Black returns as dumpling-loving panda Po, the unlikeliest of lean, mean fightin’ machines. It’s been eight years since Kung Fu Panda 3, and on the evidence here, the delay can’t be put down to KFP4 being a labour of love, the product of animation studio DreamWorks’ A team pouring in enormous amounts of effort. It’s a hurricane of slapstick (some of it in fact very funny) and age-appropriate energetic fight scenes, but lacks the sweetness and charm of the franchise at its best. It failed the wriggle test on my seven-year-old cinema date, who was squirming in her seat around the hour mark.

The plot is a bit overfussy for its target audience of small kids, though the scriptwriters...

‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ Review
Image

Image
Kung Fu Panda 4 co-director Mike Mitchell opened up about potential plans for the future of the animated blockbuster franchise.

Speaking with The Direct, Mitchell shared his hopes of exploring more parts of Po’s world in the potential next installment. After finding out about the existence of a Master Dolphin in Kung Fu Panda 3, the Shrek Forever After filmmaker expressed his desire to see the underwater world of Po’s universe in Kung Fu Panda 5, where fans could be introduced to more aquatic martial arts-fighting animals. "This is my very strange, weird, nerdy wish. But in Kung Fu Panda 3, which I executive produced, a guy came up with a gag, and it's in the film, where Po--We always go to the Hall of Heroes with Po and look around, and I loved the little taste of like, previous Masters that Po always geeks out on," Mitchell recalled.

Quick Links DreamWorks Movies That Aged Well DreamWorks Movies That Didn't Age Well

DreamWorks Animation was originally founded back in 1994. Since then, it has cemented a legacy as one of the best production studios for animated movies. They may not yet be on par with Disney or Pixar, but the fact that DreamWorks remains in that conversation is certainly worth noting. They have brought viewers beloved classics like Shrek and Kung Fu Panda, and while not every one of their films has been an instant hit in theaters, some go on to become internet classics.

As part of the top echelon of animation creators, DreamWorks has offered the world plenty of classics over the decades beyond those most notable, and many of them still hold up. However, there are some other works by DreamWorks that have, to put it lightly, aged like milk instead of wine.

“I can do it while wearing pajamas and slippers!”: Bryan Cranston Probably Had More Fun in Kung Fu Panda 4 Than Breaking Bad Despite Calling it a Creative Challenge
Image
For the first time in nearly a decade, Kung Fu Panda is back on screen with the fourth installment of the series. Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston is also back to reprise his role in the franchise as Po’s biological father, Li.

Cranston is one of the most versatile actors around, and his genius extends to voice acting as well. In addition to impressing the audience with his charisma on screen, he has also breathed life into characters through his voice alone.

Li is just one of the many characters that Cranston has voiced in his career. And yet, this role could not possibly be any farther from his Emmy Award-winning turn as Walter White in the AMC crime drama Breaking Bad. Unsurprisingly, between the two characters, Cranston certainly had a lot more fun as Po’s father.

Kung Fu Panda 4’s Funniest Pairing Shows Why The Furious Five Couldn't Appear
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Kung Fu Panda 4!

The absence of the Furious Five in Kung Fu Panda 4 allows for a greater focus on Po and Zhen's story, but it also makes room for Ping and Li Shan's hilarious journey together. The banter between Po's dads makes them the highlight of the movie, enhancing their friendship and elevating some of the movie's funniest scenes. Including the Furious Five in a larger role would have made the movie too broad, overshadowing the dynamic between Po's dads and their importance to the film.

Kung Fu Panda 4's funniest pairing shows why the Furious Five weren't able to appear in the newest movie. The film's focus is on Po and a new character, Zhen, who aids him in his quest to stop the Chameleon, a shape-shifting villain who threatens the safety of China. This happens while Po seeks out a...

Is Kung Fu Panda 4 The End Of Po's Story?
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Kung Fu Panda 4!

Kung Fu Panda 4 marks the end of Po as the Dragon Warrior, but not the end of his story in the franchise. The introduction of a new character raises questions about Po's future, but he will still play a significant role as a mentor. Po's new role as Spiritual Leader could potentially lead to future films exploring his challenges and expanding the franchise.

Kung Fu Panda 4 acts as a passing of the torch for the franchise, raising questions about whether it is the end of Po's story. Jack Black has been at the center of the Kung Fu Panda movie franchise from the very beginning, as he voiced Po in the original trilogy and TV shows. It was thanks to his prominent role as the Dragon Warrior that Po became the face of a massively successful franchise for DreamWorks. Kung Fu Panda 4...

Kung Fu Panda 5 & Po's Future Get Encouraging Update From Co-Director
Image
Po will continue as a leading character in Kung Fu Panda 5, despite rumors suggesting otherwise. The franchise began with Po rising as an unlikely hero to become the Dragon Warrior. Co-director Stephanie Ma-Stine confirmed Po will still play a prominent role in future movies.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Kung Fu Panda 4!

Jack Black's Po has led the Kung Fu Panda franchise for years, and Kung Fu Panda 5 will still see him as a leading character. The franchise began with Po rising as the unlikely hero as he worked to become the Dragon Warrior, despite the doubts from his fellow warriors. Kung Fu Panda 4 features Po's adventures as he searches for his successor, seemingly insinuating that he will no longer be the protagonist.

The idea that Po will not feature in Kung Fu Panda 5 is unfounded, however. While the sequel is not yet confirmed, Po will still be playing a prominent role.
