The second season of Netflix true crime show Dirty John focuses on the fraught and rapidly escalating feud between former married couple Betty and Dan Broderick. The two were married for many years and shared four children together, but Dan had an affair with his assistant Linda Kolkena, lied about it for years and eventually moved to divorce Betty.
Dan was a lawyer and his standing in the legal community made it very hard for Betty to get representation. Dan got custody of the children after Betty left them on his doorstep one night, and the divorce settlement eventually given to Betty was far less than she wanted – she had supported him while he was training to be a doctor and then a lawyer and taken care of their four kids, but in separation their assets were not divided equally at all.

If there is one film Christian Slater wants to revisit from his early career, it’s 1990’s “Pump Up the Volume.” The drama — which celebrates its 30th anniversary in August — centered on teenager Mark Hunter (Slater), a high school student by day and a pirate radio DJ who goes by “Hard Harry” by night.
“That is my favorite movie, I think, that I’ve ever done [and], to a large degree, favorite job,” Slater reveals on the Variety After-Show. “I felt like it was ahead of its time. It wasn’t a typical high school movie, and it really did get into some of the darker, more gruesome details of what it’s actually like to be a teenager in high school.”
The film, which dove into issues of teenage angst and suicide, has gained a cult following since it first debuted and was adapted into a musical. Slater says he...

There’s no question that Betty Broderick did the crime. But the Season 2 finale of Dirty John is more concerned with whether she’ll do the time.
On Tuesday’s episode of USA Network’s true-crime anthology, Betty stands trial for the murders of ex-husband Dan and his new wife, Linda, which she doesn’t deny committing. Now that a jury is deciding her fate, though, it’s less a question of whether Betty did kill them, and more of whether she meant to kill them.

Nov. 5, 1989 was the day Betty Broderick snapped. E! News has an exclusive preview from Oxygen's Snapped: Betty Broderick, which details the chilling real-life 911 call that came in after Betty shot and killed her ex-husband Dan Broderick in San Diego following a tumultuous divorce. "A frantic call comes in from Brad Wright. He says, 'Oh my god, something terrible has happened," author Loretta Schwartz-Nobel recalls in the clip. "We were responding to the call on a house on Cyprus Way," former San Diego police officer Dominic Valaile, who was first to arrive at the scene of the crime, recounts. "The caller, Brad Wright, tells the dispatcher the home...

Every episode of Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story paints an even uglier picture of Dan Broderick.
By the end of Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story Season 1 Episode 4, redemption for Dan wasn't even a possibility.
He wasn't just screwing over Betty but making a mockery of other women in the workplace, too. No, thank you.
The thing that I most appreciated about this episode was the inclusion of testimony from a therapist at Betty's trial. But what I least appreciate is that I can find no evidence such a man ever existed or testified on Betty's behalf.
Gaslighting. It's named after a famous motion picture in which a man who wants something from a woman pretends to be her friend, marries her, but in fact, is her enemy. And in the process being very kind to his victim, but in truth in every money, he is undermining her sanity.

If that was the total of the "good" years that Betty and Dan Broderick shared, Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story Season 1 Episode 3 didn't have much to say for their marriage.
And if we were supposed to get some perspective on Dan outside of Betty's experience with him, well, that failed.
It's still confusing whether this story is an over-the-top dramatic interpretation of the Broderick story from Betty's perspective or if they've done some research into Dan's side of the story.
If nothing else, by highlighting family friends Yvonne and Martin, the case was made for Dan's despicable treatment of Betty to be par for the course in their neck of the woods.
Maybe it could be said they're a product of their times, but if everyone with any wealth experienced the same scenario, then the institution of marriage wouldn't have made it out of the 80s.

If you've ever wondered if things have changed for women in the last 40 years or so, watching Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story might give you answers.
Then again, it could just be that nothing about Betty and Dan Broderick ever meshed, and that's why their marriage ended nastily and with one of them dead.
Honestly, after watching Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story Season 1 Episode 1 and Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story Season 1 Episode 2, it's hard to tell if one or both of them were completely bonkers.
And since Dan wasn't really around to share his side of this sordid tale, it's also kind of hard to know what to believe. Yes, even this early in the story, it seems like a "he said/she said" story that leaves nobody looking very good.
Even worse, the way the episodes themselves didn't make a great impression, either.

At 5:30 a.m. on November 5, 1989, Betty Broderick used a key stolen from her daughter to enter the San Diego home of her ex-husband, Dan Broderick, and his new wife, Linda, and shot them both dead.
I was asleep in my bedroom at my parents’ house about half a mile away. The cavalcade of sirens woke me up early on a Sunday and I was very annoyed. I was 14 years old.
It is hard to downplay how much Broderick’s crime imprinted on the psyches of those of us who lived in San Diego at the time. Dan Broderick was a president of the San Diego County Bar Association; he specialized in medical malpractice. He had a name that people just knew, either from seeing in the San Diego Union-Tribune’s coverage of his cases, or because your frenemy went to the same posh private school as his children. Despite...

Unlike the story of con man John Meehan and the last woman he manipulated before her youngest daughter ultimately killed him in 2016, which was the basis for the first season of “Dirty John,” the subject of Season 2 may be a distant memory to some viewers. Betty Broderick’s 1989 double murder of her ex-husband Dan Broderick and his second wife made international headlines and spawned a few books and a two-part made-for-tv movie that starred Meredith Baxter as Betty — but in the three decades since, no one has taken a deeper look at what caused this relationship to unravel to the point where a once-loving wife and mother would commit such a heinous act. Until now.
In the second season of “Dirty John,” subtitled “The Betty Broderick Story,” showrunner Alexandra Cunningham wanted to examine the “why” behind the murders, she tells Variety.

It would be safe to say that Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness has become one of our latest obsessions. Joe Exotic is the subject of a very good in depth podcast from Wondery called Joe Exotic: Tiger King (it was formerly called Over My Dead Body: Joe Exotic). That podcast is a perfect companion to the Netflix documentary series and is now the inspiration for a scripted drama starring Kate McKinnon as Exotic’s nemesis, Carole Baskin.
This is not the first podcast to inspire a TV show, documentary, or dramatisation, and it certainly won’t be the last. Major studios and production companies use podcasts more and more as sources of original IP and a testing ground to see if there’s an appetite or an audience for the subject matter. Making a podcast is cheaper than making a TV pilot and gives you as much if not...

Dirty John is back to bring fans another sordid love story that went horribly wrong: the true-life story of Betty (Amanda Peet) and Dan Broderick (Christian Slater), and what Oprah Winfrey herself deemed one of "America's messiest divorces." The trailer for season two of the anthology series has arrived, and it paints a vivid picture of how the seemingly perfect marriage of college sweethearts ended up with a former housewife being convicted of killing her ex-husband and his second wife. Peet serves severely scorned ex-wife to a T in the trailer, saying, "I would've been treated better if I had been a dog and served my master. I'm amazed it only took one bullet to kill Dan Broderick."
We know she's the "villain" of the season, but damn if that line isn't a little iconic. The trailer gives fans brief peeks at a few of the moments that led real-life...
