On Wednesday, a host of musicians came together to honor late Irish legends Shane MacGowan and Sinead O’Connor with a tribute concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Most notably, O’Connor’s daughter, Roisin Waters, paid tribute to her mother with a stirring performance of “Nothing Compares 2 U.”
The concert also saw Bettye Lavette sing “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got,” Cat Power put her spin on “The Body of an American,” and Resistance Revival Chorus cover “Thank You for Hearing Me,” among other performances of O’Connor’s music. Additionally, Glen Hansard and Imelda May teamed up to perform MacGowan and O’Connor’s duet “Haunted.”
Among the artists who covered songs by MacGowan and his band The Pogues were Violent Femmes’ Gordon Gano (“A Pair of Brown Eyes”), Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hütz (“The Church of Holy Spook”), Billy Bragg, The Hold Steady...

Sinéad O’Connor died of natural cases, the coroner in London has said.
The “Nothing Compares 2 U” singer died last summer at the age of 56, and the following day London’s Metropolitan Police said the death was not being treated as “suspicious.”
Six months on, Southwark Coroner’s Court has said in a statement that the singer died of natural causes. “The coroner has therefore ceased their involvement in her death,” the statement added.
The singer had recently moved back to London, tweeting earlier that month that she had been away for more than two decades.
There was an outpouring of grief at the death of the popular Irish artist, who shot to fame after her second album and appeared on multiple U.S. shows and ‘best of’ albums. O’Connor also courted controversy throughout her career. As the musical guest on Saturday Night Live in 1992 — her second appearance on the...

Dropkick Murphys team up with Violent Femmes to fight the Ku Klux Klan on the new collaborative track “Gotta Get to Peekskill.” It’s the latest single from Dropkick’s upcoming album, Okemah Rising.
As previously reported, Okemah Rising (due May 12th) is the second Dropkick album to interpret the words of late folk legend Woody Guthrie, following last year’s This Machine Still Kills Fascists.
The song features the distinctive voices of Violent Femmes frontman Gordon Gano and Dropkick Murphys singer Ken Casey, as they trade verses on the track, singing Guthrie’s lyrics about confronting the Ku Klux Klan.
“We had the privilege of collaborating with the Violent Femmes on this feisty track,” said Casey in a press release. “Acoustic Dropkicks sounds a lot like the Violent Femmes in my opinion, so the collaboration is musically and symbolically fitting. And singing a song about fighting the Ku Klux Klan is always extra fun.

Dropkick Murphys have announced a second album of songs featuring lyrics by folk legend Woody Guthrie. The new LP, titled Okemah Rising, arrives May 12th and is preceded by the single “I Know How It Feels.”
Okemah Rising follows 2022’s This Machine Still Kills Fascists, which also is comprised of acoustic songs written around Guthrie’s previously-unpublished lyrics. Among the guests on the upcoming release are Violent Femmes, Jesse Ahern, and Jaime Wyatt.
“Every night, when the audience is singing along with Woody’s words, his steadfast defense of the working class, and his fight against social injustice and the abuse of political power comes across loud and clear,” said Dropkick Murphys singer Ken Casey in a press release. “So as long as Dropkick Murphys are involved, Woody’s message will always be heard.”

As we prepare to close the door on 2022, celebrities are taking the last few days to celebrate and recount this year’s memories.
Despite it being a year riddled with the tragic deaths of high-profile figures, including Queen Elizabeth II and Foo Fighters star Taylor Hawkins, and even more real-life drama like the infamous Oscars slap, there have still been cultural phenomenons that united us all: the breathtaking season four of Stranger Things and Taylor Swift’s record-breaking album Midnights.
So, as we step into the new year, singers, actors, and sports professionals have chosen to reflect on and highlight these personal wins.
“Future Nostalgia 2022, the year that changed my life. Thank you for the lifetime of memories,” wrote Dua Lipa of her Grammy-winning second album.

After a summer where many music festivals felt anticlimactic and unfulfilling (Was standing on dirt or gravel for hours on end ever fun?), AmericanaFest 2022 delivered one of its most satisfying and diverse weeks in the history of the Nashville event. While the festival suffered a major blow with the loss of its de facto home base, the Cannery Complex, to the city’s aggressive development, artists and bands found new venues at which to play and friendly audiences eager to experience something fresh. Here’s the sounds, parties, and places that moved us.

The Walker Roaders — the supergroup featuring ex-members of the Pogues, Flogging Molly, and Dropkick Murphys — have released a new cover of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightning.”
The cover finds the Walker Roaders using a banjo to deliver the song’s iconic blues riff, while later bits of acoustic guitar and accordion float over the clattering percussion. The track arrives with a music video that blends archival footage — including some of Howlin’ Wolf — with shots of frontman James Fearnley singing “Smokestack Lightning” in his resonant baritone.

Columbia Records will release Bruce Springsteen’s new album Letter to You on Oct. 23, according to Rolling Stone. The 12-track album is the first to feature The E Street Band since High Hopes in 2014. As an introductory salutation to his 20th studio LP, Springsteen released the title-track lead single “Letter to You.”
“I love the emotional nature of ‘Letter to You,’” Springsteen said in a statement, via Rolling Stone. “And I love the sound of the E Street Band playing completely live in the studio, in a way we’ve never done before, and with no overdubs. We made the album in only five days, and it turned out to be one of the greatest recording experiences I’ve ever had.”
This is the first time Springsteen has performed with the E Street Band since The River 2016 tour. The music video shows the band working in Springteen’s home studio in New Jersey.

The Kickstarter campaign to remove the rat from the ending of Martin Scrosese’s “The Departed” has come to an end, but not because it reached its goal. The Kickstarter page has been taken down because the campaign is now “the subject of an intellectual property dispute and is currently unavailable.” The campaign was launched by Adam Sacks of Brooklyn, New York, and went viral earlier this month.
The Kickstarter goal was to raise $4,000 by March 21 in order to buy the proper equipment needed to digitally erase the rat from the movie’s last shot. Sacks had said on the campaign’s Kickstarter that he intended to buy 50 Blu-rays of “The Departed” and edit them so that he could redistribute these rat-less versions. According to Kickstarter, this is where the campaign got into trouble with Warner Bros.

Only on the internet in 2019 would a Kickstarter campaign to digitally remove the rat from the last scene of Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed” not only go viral on social media but also earn over $2,300 and counting from 87 backers. The campaign’s total goal is to reach $4,000 by March 21, a number it should easily be able to hit with over a month left to go. Why $4,000? Campaign founder Adam Sacks of Brooklyn, New York has exhaustively (and hilariously) listed the steps needed to remove the rat from “The Departed” on the official Kickstarter page.
While the campaign’s Kickstarter page reads like a joke, it has nonetheless launched an online debate about Scorsese’s decision to end his Oscar-winning crime movie with shot of a rat crawling across the screen. The film’s plot centers around two rats: Leonardo DiCaprio plays a police officer who infiltrates the Boston mob and...

Yesterday I finally made my way to Museum of the Moving Image’s Martin Scorsese exhibit (along with a screening of Gangs of New York in 35mm) and it’s an essential experience for those in and around New York City. A comprehensive look into the career and life from one of our greatest directors, there’s everything from personal exchanges between Terrence Malick and the director to countless storyboards to rare behind-the-scenes photos to a map of the city with corresponding clips from his films. It runs through April 23, but if you can’t make it to Queens, we have a taste of it today.
First up, the exhibit features a video on the cameos the directors has made throughout his career, and now we have another version of such a compilation. From the the most substantial in Taxi Driver to a voice-only one in The Wolf of Wall Street...

Stephen Colbert and Jack Black debuted a rousing patriotic jam, "My Kind of America" on The Late Show Wednesday, in an effort to help politicians — well, mostly Republicans — unable to find musicians willing to license them songs for the campaign trail.
As Colbert recalled in the preceding bit, a rocking, all-American song is a crucial component of any campaign trail rally. But Republican presidential hopefuls over the years have had trouble finding the right song — not for lack of taste, but for harboring vastly different political views than the artists they play.

Music has long played a very important role in Martin Scorsese's career. Whether it's the memorable uses of songs like Eric Clapton's "Layla" or "I.m Shipping Up to Boston" by Dropkick Murphys in features like Goodfellas and The Departed or concert documentaries he's helmed like The Last Waltz and Shine A Light, the filmmaker has long found a way to bring the two mediums into harmonious sync. It's for this reason that we're not at all shocked by what's being proposed as Scorsese's next project after the religious period drama Silence. Billboard has it on good authority that Martin Scorsese is in the early process of trying to make a movie about The Ramones, the legendary punk band. While things appear to still be in the early stages, Jeff Jampol and Dave Frey - the co-managers of the band's estate - are working to plan a big...

I've come to the conclusion that 2013 is the year when pop music died thanks to Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. Indie rock is the new norm, for some terrifying reason, as Arcade Fire and Vampire Weekend became more common than The Black Keys. Rap is more contrived than ever thanks to Kanye West and Jay-z's bloated egos and mediocre albums. And overall the music has suffered greatly because of it all making this past year far weaker in my eyes than 2012. Before I run down what I feel are my favorite and most disappointing albums of the year I have to acknowledge the very worthy runner-ups. Although they didn't make the list: Filter, Blue October, The Lonely Island, Gemini Syndrome, Dropkick Murphys, Eminem, Hatebreed, Queens of The Stone Age, Snoop Lion, Dave Grohl's 'Sound City' collaborations...

The Dropkick Murphys are a Celtic-Punk band from Boston, Massachusetts. In Nottingham UK we caught up with the band’s lead vocalist Al Barr.
Wc: How’s the response to the new album been?
Al: It’s been unbelievable really. It’s crazy really, I mean we keep putting records out and people keep buying them. We’re really grateful; we have the best fans in the world. We always say it’s been amazing to see the growth over the last seventeen years and see the band go from this little four piece to this seven piece thing that’s taking the world. Everywhere we go is like a party, it has been amazing but yeah the new record has been received really well so far. I mean there is always going to be someone who says they don’t like it but I think our fans are just...

Have you ever watched The Town or The Departed and marvelled at the sing-song way the criminals all swear at each other, or yearned with every fibre of your body to deliver an offensive punch-line like Ted? Last night at the Td Garden, Boston's finest (and a few non-locals) teamed up for a concert to benefit The One Fund for victims of last month's Boston Marathon bombing. There was stand-up from hometown comics like Steven Wright and Dane Cook and musical performances from local bands like the J. Geils Band, the Dropkick Murphys, and of course, Boston. Perhaps Boston's biggest band, Aerosmith, headlined the show with classics like "Dream On," "Walk This Way" and "Livin' On The Edge."...

Thursday night (May 30) several acts came together for Boston Strong, a concert held to raise money for One Fund Boston, which supports victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. The artists included Aerosmith, James Taylor, Dropkick Murphys, Boston, Jimmy Buffett and the New Kids on the Block.
You know who else performed? Dane Cook. But the live stream viewers wouldn't know it because Cook refused to let his material be part of the live stream. Cook tweets:
"Hey everyone sorry my set was not a part of the live stream or televised! I didn't want any of the new material to hit the airwaves yet!"
The reaction online was swift and merciless. Responses on Twitter include:
"@DaneCook Really? Then why do a new set at a charity show? Couldn't you just steal some @louisck jokes like you usually do? #concert4boston." -- Adam Frawley
"@DaneCook It's your acting career that you shouldn't let hit the airwaves.

The longer the networks reported on the Boston manhunt on Friday afternoon, the less we knew about what was actually going on. Before the bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was finally caught that night, the confusion around the case had already raised some troubling questions about the power of TV news in general.
At a time when social media offers quicker updates than the anchors, most people only turn to the networks when they need a singular, authoritative voice — one that waits to report the news until it’s been triple-confirmed, sorting out the rumors from the facts. But as police closed in on Dzhokhar,...

Punk band Dropkick Murphys formed in Massachusetts in the '90s, long celebrating their love for the city of Boston with live albums nodding to Fenway Park and singles with names like "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" and "The State of Massachusetts." So when two explosions at this week's Boston Marathon injured dozens of victims, the band members mobilized, doing their part to help their beloved city.
Dropkick Murphys, made up of Ken Casey, Matt Kelly, Al Barr, James Lynch, Tim Brennan, Josh Wallace, and Jeff DaRosa, began marketing a "For Boston" t-shirt on their band's website, pledging all proceeds from the shirt sales to victims of the bombings, writing, "100 percent of all proceeds from this shirt will go directly to the victims and families of the Boston bombings." The band was able to reach $65,000 in the first 15 hours of sales, approaching the $100,000 mark soon after.
