Last Thursday, after a sweet ceremony, the late great Kobe Bean Bryant was honored with a statue outside of Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The ceremony was full of the quaint and charming details you might see on Sportscenter: Vanessa Bryant spoke, and joked about how it was Kobe who picked out the pose, so “if you don’t like it, tough shit.” Phil Jackson was in a reflective mood, talking about the relationship he had with Kobe and how it improved over time. The ceremony felt like a coronation for Bryant,...

“It goes without saying that today is an especially sad day for us since Kobe and Gigi aren’t here for what is supposed to be an incredibly joyous moment and Kobe’s legacy,” she said. “Kobe has so many people that have supported him all over the world from the very beginning. And this moment isn’t just for Kobe, but it’s for all of you that have been rooting for him all of these years.

“Kobe picked the pose you’re about to see,” said Vanessa Bryant at the unveiling of the statue honoring her late husband today, “so if anyone has any problems with it, tough sh*t.”
That pose, for those wondering, has the Lakers legend standing, right hand stretched upward, raising his index finger in what could be seen as an “I’m No. 1 gesture.”
It may indeed be that. Bryant, everyone knows, did not lack for confidence in his own talents.
But it is also a snapshot from the end of the game against the Toronto Raptors on January 22, 2006. In that contest, Bryant scored 81 points, the second highest single game point total in NBA history. As Bryant walked off the court that night, he held up his index finger as much in acknowledgement of the cheering crowd as in celebration of himself.

Vanessa Bryant, the late NBA star Kobe Bryant’s widow, has been criticized for not doing more for the black community. After Kobe’s death, she inherited his wealth, which included a $600 million estate.
During his career, Kobe made millions from his time at the NBA, where he played as a shooting guard and won five NBA rings.
He also made millions through partnerships. Kobe became a brand ambassador for Nike and was among the first stars to sign a shoe deal before he retired in April 2016.
On January 26, 2020, Kobe, along with their 13-year-old daughter, Gianna Bryant, and seven others, died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California. A jury later awarded Vanessa damages after police leaked photos of the crash site.
When he died, Nike decided to relaunch several of their signature lines made famous by Kobe. The brand made a promotional video discussing Kobe’s personality and dedication to the game.

Updated: We’ve all heard of the first screenings for Oscar contending movies during Thanksgiving weekend, i.e. American Hustle and Joy in years past, however, to literally hold a glittery world premiere post-Turkey day is a rare feat. But that’s exactly what 32x Grammy winner Beyoncé did tonight with her AMC-distributed concert documentary movie Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé which made its grand debut at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
While AMC had The Grove shut down for the world premiere of their first distributed concert movie, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (which is headed to $250M WW) back in mid-October, that wasn’t an option given the busy holiday season; that Rick Caruso high-end outdoor shopping mall already occupied by Santa Claus and a Christmas tree. In two decades, Natalia Bryant has achieved what some Beyoncé fans have only ever considered a dream. Equipped with past modeling experience for Ivy Park and a lifetime of admiration for the Grammy-winning singer, Bryant has landed a job as Beyoncé's intern on her "Renaissance" World Tour. The Los Angeles Lakers are back in the NBA playoffs, and waves of celebrities like Jack Nicholson and Adele have returned to Crypto.com Arena to bear witness.
Spotting which celebrities are in attendance for live sporting events can be almost as entertaining as the games themselves (particularly if you’re not a sports fan), and no team has drawn quite as many famous attendees as Hollywood’s hometown ball club. Since the “showtime” era of the 1980s, actors, musicians and reality stars have treated Laker games like an informal, nationally-televised catwalk, sitting courtside at both the Forum and the arena formerly known as the Staples Center to watch some of the world’s best athletes square off.

Basketball Wives is currently in its 10th season, and the biggest critique is that not many cast members are married to NBA players on the show, despite its title. There have been discussions on social media regarding why actual wives have been hesitant to join, especially since the NBA boasts many long-term couples, one of which was Kobe and Vanessa Bryant. But Vanessa was reportedly asked to join on several occasions.

The show premiered in 2010 on VH1. The mothership franchise was based in Miami, with a spinoff airing the following year in LA. Both franchises have merged, with filming taking place primarily in LA.
When the show initially premiered, executive producer and cast member Shaunie O’Neal was midway through her divorce from Shaquille O’Neal, and the only other wife on the show was Jennifer Williams.

Vanessa Bryant is making sure her daughters have a chance to celebrate their father. On March 13, Los Angeles's Tcl Chinese Theatre honored the late basketball icon by permanently embedding his footprints and handprints in the historic theatre's courtyard and marked the moment with a ceremony attended by the star's family.
Kobe became the first athlete to imprint his hand and footprints in front of the Tcl Chinese Theatre in 2011. But while most of the celebrity hand and footprints on display in the courtyard are switched out from time to time, Kobe's will be a permanent addition.
Vanessa brought her daughters - 20-year-old Natalia, 6-year-old Bianka, and 3-year-old Capri - to the ceremony, which was also attended by Lakers President Jeanie Buss and former coach Byron Scott. Prior to the unveiling, Natalia honored her father in a moving speech shared by Extra on YouTube. "When most people knew him as a basketball player or a storyteller,...

While nominees mainly attend the prestigious Oscars award ceremony - sometimes with their spouses and other times with their children or siblings - when it comes to the Oscars afterparties, most of Hollywood's best and brightest make the invite list, film involvement or not. At the Vanity Fair Oscars party on March 12, Vanessa Bryant, 40, and her daughter Natalia Bryant, 20, were in attendance looking glamorous in matching black floor-length gowns. While Vanessa's was a sequined number, Natalia's dress was off the shoulder and featured trains flowing from the sleeves.
In 2018, Vanessa attended the Oscars with her late husband, NBA player Kobe Bryant, when he won the Oscar for best animated short film for "Dear Basketball," a six-minute onscreen telling of his poem of the same name, which traces his love of basketball from youth to his NBA success. It’s been a little over three years since Vanessa Bryant walked out on the court at the Los Angeles Lakers’ arena on Feb. 24, 2020, for the memorial service of her husband, Kobe Bryant, and their daughter, Gianna. On March 7, Vanessa made her return to the venue — then called the Staples Center and now Crypto.com Arena — to honour her late husband’s close friend and teammate, Pau Gasol, as the team retired his No. 16 jersey.
During the ceremony, the Lakers owners and players talked about Gasol’s legacy on the team, which includes two NBA championships and multiple All-Star Game appearances, and lifted his number to the rafters.

Vanessa Bryant has reached a $28.85 million settlement with Los Angeles County over photos that were shared of the 2020 helicopter crash that killed her late husband, Kobe Bryant; their 13-year-old daughter, Gianna; and seven others, ESPN reported on March 1, 2023. Vanessa Bryant has reached a nearly $29 million settlement with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, fire department and the county itself that resolves a lawsuit over photos taken of NBA star Kobe Bryant and their daughter Giana after they and several others were killed in a helicopter crash.
Bryant sued in Sept. 2020 after learning that first responders had taken photos on their cell phones and shared them with colleagues, and one person showed a stranger at a bar.
A federal jury in August awarded Bryant $16 million for past and future pain and suffering and emotional distress caused by deputies and firefighters sharing photos of her late husband and daughter at the site of the crash. The award includes $10 million in damages from the sheriff’s department and $6 million from the fire department.

Per usual, Heidi Klum pulled out all the stops for Halloween this year. At her annual party on Monday night — which returned this year after a two-year-long Covid-19 hiatus — the 49-year-old model shocked everyone by dressing up as a giant earthworm on a fishing hook.
She writhed and wriggled on the carpet, while her husband, Tom Kaulitz, stood in as the fisherman who hooked her (and lost his eye in the process.)
“This costume took a very long time,” she told Et’s Rachel Smith while lying on the ground as cameras snapped pics. “It took several months.”
Klum said that last year she “wanted to be a tree” but Kaulitz “thought that would be difficult to do, so I started thinking outside the box.”

Ashley Judd is grieving the loss of mother Naomi Judd, and is opening up about the experience of discovering the late singer’s body in an op-ed for the New York Times.
According to Judd, the pain she experienced from her mother’s suicide was only made worse by the behaviour of law enforcement officials when they arrived on the scene, questioning her in a manner that made her feel like she was under “interrogation.”
“In the immediate aftermath of a life-altering tragedy, when we are in a state of acute shock, trauma, panic, and distress, the authorities show up to talk to us. Because many of us are socially conditioned to cooperate with law enforcement, we are utterly unguarded in what we say,” Judd wrote.

In a commentary published in the New York Times, Ashley Judd explains why she has filed a petition attempting to block the release of a report on the death of her mother, Naomi Judd — saying that “the horror” of the experience “will only worsen if the details surrounding her death are disclosed by the Tennessee law that generally allows police reports, including family interviews, from closed investigations to be made public.”
In the essay, Judd reveals that her mother — who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at her home on April 30 — was still alive at the time police arrived, and contends that the barrage of questioning kept her from attending to her mother in some of her final moments. Most relevant to her objection to the report, though, is that she says family members revealed many personal things in the heat of interrogation without any thought as to how those...

Recalling the “most shattering day” of her life – April 30, 2022, when mother Naomi Judd “had come to believe that her mental illness would only get worse, never better” and “took her own life,” Ashley Judd says in “The Right To Keep Private Pain Private” that she “felt cornered and powerless as law enforcement officers began questioning me while the last of my mother’s life was fading.”
“I wanted to be comforting her,” Judd writes, “telling her how she was about to see her daddy and younger brother as she ‘went away home,’ as we say in Appalachia. Instead, without it being indicated I had any choices about when, where and how to participate,...

Vanessa Bryant has been awarded a significant sum in her civil suit against Los Angeles County regarding improper sharing of photos of the helicopter crash site where her husband, Kobe Bryant, and daughter were killed along with the other seven people in the aircraft.
After the 11-day trial, which included descriptions and photos of the graphic and horrific crash that likely re-traumatized the grieving Bryant and her family, she was awarded 16 million by a federal jury.
The nine-person jury convened to determine whether L.A. County sheriff’s department and fire department officials violated the privacy rights of Vanessa Bryant and a second plaintiff, Chris Chester, who lost his wife and daughter in the same crash when they took photos of the site, potentially due to Kobe Bryant’s fame.
The families of the deceased showed evidence that some of those who took photos have still not been identified, and...

Vanessa Bryant plans to donate proceeds from the 16 million judgment she won Wednesday in a lawsuit against Los Angeles County to a foundation named for her husband Kobe Bryant and daughter Gianna, it was reported today.
The nonprofit Mamba and Mambacita Sports foundation offers sports education to underserved athletes. Started in 2016 as the Mamba Sports Foundation — the Lakers great’s nickname was Black Mamba — the charity was renamed in 2020 to honor the Bryants’ 13-year-old basketball-playing daughter, Gianna, who died alongside her father in the January 2020 helicopter crash that prompted the lawsuit against the county.
After an 11-day trial, a Los Angeles federal jury on Wednesday ordered Los Angeles County to pay a combined total of 31 million to Bryant and an Orange County man who lost his daughter and wife in the crash for the mental anguish caused by photos sheriff’s deputies and firefighters took and shared of the crash victims’ bodies.
