The pandemic may have pushed back the theatrical release of Pixar’s “Soul” (from Juneteenth to November 20), but that didn’t stop Disney from dropping a new teaser trailer on Saturday, touting the original song, “Parting Ways”.
Pete Docter, Pixar’s chief creative officer, follows up his Oscar-winning “Inside Out” with the Cannes-selected “Soul,” which explores the answers to some of life’s most important questions of identity. The musical fantasy introduces Pixar’s first Black protagonist, Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx), a New York middle-school band teacher who gets the ultimate gig playing piano at the top jazz club, only to fall into a manhole and journey to The Great Before, a fantastical place where new souls are formed before birth. There he encounters precocious soul, 22 (Tina Fey), who rejects the appeal of the human experience. But they team up so Gardner can return to Earth and complete his journey.

Jazz continued to explode in 2019, shooting off in countless directions. There wasn’t one dominant trend, sound, or scene in the genre this year, but there were clear areas of focus, informal constellations of like-minded players and conceptualists: artists who harnessed the energy of rock, devised unusual instrumental textures, pushed compositional limits, or embraced the power of the voice in non-traditional ways. Here, from the perspective of one curious listener, are a few of the releases that stood out this year, arranged according to certain key features. The below isn...

New York -- If you didn't know much about Esperanza Spalding – and many people didn't before her surprise Grammy win last year – you might be inclined to think that her latest album, "Radio Music Society," is the jazz artist's attempt to crossover into the mainstream music world.
There certainly are several elements of the record that could lead to such a conclusion. It's her most accessible album, with R&B friendly grooves and production credits from rapper Q-Tip. It even features a cover of a Michael Jackson groove from "Off the Wall."
But if you know Esperanza like renowned jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette, a frequent collaborator and a guest on "Radio Music Society," you will know that the bassist, songwriter, singer and producer never strays far from her jazz roots, and is not one to alter her sound so it fits neatly into any format – and certainly doesn't do it...

The 2012 Grammy Awards red carpet was dominated by black dresses by the ladies. It isn't terribly unusual to see black dresses, but it seemed like an over-abundance this year. Whose dress do you think is the snazziest? We are partial to Kimberly Perry (above, middle) and the Dodds sisters Shauna and Sarah, (immediately below, middle).
The rest of the women are (from top left, continuing down): Tia Carrere, Jamie Grace Harper, Kimberly Perry, Michelle Holme, Linda Chorney, Mandisa, Shawna Thompson, Sarah and Shauna Doddgs, Joy Williams, Terri Lyne Carrington, Rebecca Black, Jo Champa, Nancy O'Dell, Giuliana Rancic and Snooki.
It is probably just a coincidence, but we can't but think of the music world mourning for the loss of superstar Whitney Houston. Whose dress do you like best?...
